Bored, I was skimming through the on-screen program guide, looking for something to watch on TV. When I saw that G4 was doing five hours straight of Comic Con coverage, I thought that'd be a pretty darned cool thing to watch.
Wrong. How could adult hosts sound so much like teenage male WoW players? They even had a female host but she was all fawning over all the women in skimpy outfits, too. Seriously, it sounded like none of them had ever seen a woman before. Even in interviews with stars, the hosts sounded like a bunch of teenagers. The language, the way of speaking, the facial expressions. It was both so very embarrassing and unattractive to watch.
I don't know if I've ever actually watched anything on that channel before, so maybe this is an exception instead of the rule, but I'd be surprised if so.
On a related note, "Nothing ruins a good LAN party like uncomfortable guests or lots of tension, both of which can result from mixing immature, misogynistic male-gamers with female counterparts. Though we've done our best to avoid these situations in years past, we've certainly had our share of problems. As a result, we no longer allow women to attend this event. So... yeah. Instead of dealing with the issue or telling the men that such comments are unacceptable, they're just not inviting women anymore. Nice.
On a totally unrelated note, I'm 48% done with GoT, and I've put my finger on why the book isn't working for me. Remember the old "story plot graph"?

That's what a typical book or story plot should look like. A Dance with Dragons does not, instead it feels like the space between two of those orange dots. It's all well and fine that this is part of a larger story, but each book really does need to stand on its own as well.
Nearly halfway done, and I'm still not hooked on the book. I actually skimmed most of one chapter. There are only two characters I have any interest in, and one of them has had only two or three chapters so far (Reek).
And in more unrelated foo:

Somebody's going to get a nose full of claws real soon~
Another image from the new Avatar show, eee! It looks like the characters with her will be adult men!I do hope it's nice and slashy. Actually, I know it won't be, since the writers wrote the ending to the first series outright saying NO to all slashers (which made for a rather WTF ending, but whatever). And here's the trailer. It's hard to see the images, but I love the "new" music!

Date: 2011-07-24 09:28 am (UTC)The LAN stuff, I agree with the article. If we can't have women because the adult teenagers can't go 4 minutes without making a sandwich joke then they better bar black people as well since I hear far more of that shit then I do the female "jokes". It's a LAN party, how do you combat that kind of shit? Simple, when you hear someone saying it, you know where they are since IT'S A LAN! 3 strikes and your out. I'd prefer a 1 chance system (well I'd prefer they be shot out of a canon but, you know, limitations) but since they are used to hanging out with their 12 year old friends gotta give them a couple chances to change their instinctive responses.
It is really mind boggling to me since I work with one of the stereotypical 19 year old trapped in a 12 year olds mind WoW players so he says a lot of stuff that just makes me want to hit him some times (he has a terminal case of snowflake syndrome). But I've not once heard him say anything racist, sexist, or even homophobic. He doesn't even use "gay" as the way most teens do to mean "bad". So either I've somehow managed to find someone who should be placed in a zoo so that we can preserve his endangered kind or we need to start firing some of these people into the sun to clean up the gaming community.
Anyways! That dog is toast, the cat is being incredibly patient but I foresee pain very soon. Yay Avatar! Is it here yet?

Yeah, agreed on the LAN idea. Show the kids this stuff is unacceptable, let them learn.
I wonder when Avatar is coming out? Hopefully sooooooon!

Date: 2011-07-24 08:04 pm (UTC)I was (am?) totally a Kitara/Zuko shipper, but I didn't mind the ending. I felt like the writers were trolling us all along, and I felt amused. Plus, I felt as though they've had the Avatar sequel in mind since the beginning, and if Aang/Kitara's the only way that works, then I trust in 'em.
'Sides, it's nice to throw a bone to the little guy. Uh, no gay joke, I promise. (Aang/Zuko? Not even an original thought!)

Date: 2011-07-24 08:21 pm (UTC)And I just read a highly cool thing:
". Her sidekicks are a very bishounen-looking firebender (named Mako for Uncle Iroh's voice talent) and the comic relief earthbender Bolin. The polar bear-dog creature is Naga, and her design is apparently based on the dog of one of the creators."
How cool is it that they named a main character after him! Naga always makes me think of snake-women though.
