Computer exploded

thistlechaserNearly literally exploded. On iPad, forgive typos.
For a week or so, computer seemed to be overheating. Cleaned out dust, opened housing, left open.
Came home today. Soon after sitting down, it powered down like overheating normal. I reached to turn it off so I could blow it out again, and it exploded. Electricity arced out almost a foot wide and there were two loud bangs and then another electric arc. Never saw anything like it. Dived to unplug it.apartment smells like electric fire.
Carted it off to computer repair place. They might call me tonight with what,s wrong, but it might be tomorrow. No computer D: too hard to make big unhappy faces, imagine more.
iPad has Twitter and AIM but not MSN/Trillian. No idea what to do with no computer. Sad face.

I used meebo to satisfy my myriad IM needs on my iPad, I've since switched to Beejive. You can use the web version of meebo on the iPad too instead of getting the app.

Date: 2012-02-09 10:59 am (UTC)If I'm reading this correctly and you had your case open while it was running, I have a feeling that was involved. Really not a good idea to do that. Seems like you could have had a static charge that combined with whatever was going wrong and with the case open...boom. I'm not a physicist, so I could be completely wrong, but static + computers = bad, and having your case open makes it much more vulnerable to static.
Expect to have to get a new computer. I can't believe the repair guy gave you hope that this is repairable. Even if the "problem" is just the power supply, when something goes out with electricity arcing where it's not supposed to, your motherboard probably got fried.

Unless that thing was grounded to the centre of the earth it wouldn't surprise me if pretty much everything was fried. I imagine the hard drives would probably survive so all your data should be recoverable at the very least.
I totally killed my computer on Monday (no giant electrical discharges unfortunately) and had to reinstall my OS. Lost pretty much everything, oh well. At least it runs like new now! Now if you'll excuse me, I have 8 years of FFXI updates to download.
