I like catching the Dr. Oz show when I can. So many good tips about weight loss and health! Earlier this week, he had Hungry Girl on. She's lost a couple hundred pounds by eating more food. Wacky but true! A bunch of others have lost a lot of weight with her help, too.

Turns out it's not as wacky as it sounds. Things like taking a frozen meal with 300 or so calories and mixing it into a giant bowl of veggies, so you're getting four or five times the amount of food for basically the same calories.

Her daily newsletter (subscribe here) is really, really useful. Recipes, suggestions on new foods to try, etc. I've only been subscribed to it a couple days now and I already have a bunch of tips and things to try. (If only I could make time to get to the supermarket and shop!)

I'd like to try the foil packet chicken from today's newsletter, but it calls for fresh thyme and fresh basil. When they're even in the supermarket, fresh herbs cost $5 a packet, and I use them once and then they go bad and I toss them out. I have the space, I wonder if I could actually grow some potted herbs myself? Ponder ponder ponder. This could be interesting.

(And I have to laugh at myself. I never before thought about growing my own herbs. Is this a reflection of current RP? Thistle's joy at growing his own herb garden leaking over into RL? I think it's more a happy coincidence. Still, the idea of planning this out, buying benches or tables to set pots on, is making me oddly happy. Or maybe it's the idea of being able to cook food that tastes good!)

Ya this is how it starts. First it's herbs, then your growing your own tomatoes, next thing you know you've got chickens wandering around for the eggs. Slippery slope!

Oh man, I'd love chickens! Unfortunately I don't have nearly enough room for them. Tomatoes? Maybe those!

:D :D

By the way, I have the first Korra ep downloaded, but I still haven't watched it yet. Arg!

I think you'll like the episode. Although there is one part near the beginning that will probably aggravate the hell out of you and I look forward to it :P

Ha. I bet it was the part about Zuko's mother? I snickered and rolled my eyes at that, of course they wouldn't say! :P

Korra quickly grew on me, too. Which I'm glad, because she somewhat annoyed me at first.

The music in the ep was so good! I don't usually notice that kind of thing.

Looking forward to the next ep. I hear tell we get it this weekend! :D

Ya, It's really going to depend on the support characters but in terms of Korra I really like her character.

Yeah. She seemed annoyingly spunky at first, but it seems nicely balanced with her knowing what she has to do and wanting to do it.

[livejournal.com profile] grysar and I have considered growing our own basil and such for much the same reason. Neither of us have ever RP'ed a character who gardens, so I'm going to guess coincidence. ;)

I find basil incredibly finicky to grow, but perenials like thyme and rosemary do beautifully in a container garden as long as you remember to water them on a semi-regular basis.

I love growing fresh thyme.

Also, the farmer's market frequently has fresh basil, especially in the summer for only $1 a bunch.

Ooooooh. I didn't think about getting it from the farmer's market! (DUH!) Thanks, for both parts! After work I'm going to look for a bench or something that I can set some pots on.

Growing herbs is super easy (and I'm surprised by the basil comment-when I was growing them, my basil was the hardiest and easiest of the lot). And the seeds are quite cheap, so if you mess up, it's easy enough to start again!

Maybe it's the different climate? We're so hot and bone dry here, maybe basil likes it better by you?

I have some seeds now, yay! I hadn't intended to buy them today, but there were some ready-made setups (pot, soil, collection of seeds), so I grabbed them. :D

Thistle, I live in Utah. I know hot and bone dry just as well as you. ;)

Ha! Last night I was getting ready for bed, thought about this, paused, and went "Hey, wait...". Belatedly: Yeah. :P

I actually have an Aerogarden 3 (http://www.aerogarden.com/) that I got for Christmas last year that I'm still using. It's done great in growing herbs, but if you have a bit of patience and a bit more room than I used to have in my apartment, you could probably do the same thing with small pots and cheaper seeds.

Oh huh! That looks really interesting. I bought some stuff already, but if they fail, I'll look into that. :D
