I'm in love. Fiber is the best thing ever. For most of my adult life, I've had "stomach problems", the kind that require you to go running for a bathroom frequently and too often by surprise.

Unrelated to that, I needed to work on my cholesterol and other assorted blood things. Not wanting to change my lifestyle (yummy, yummy fried foods), I thought I could "cheat" -- ear fiber.

And know what? Not only did it work for that, it 100% solved my stomach issues.

"But Thistle! I thought you hated all vegetables! How are you eating fiber?" The answer is simple (and yummy): Fiber One cereal. I eat basically three bowls a day (the "twigs" kind, so low low low calories) with a little of one of the flavored Fiber One cereals tossed in for taste. (And soy milk, which has tons more calcium than regular milk.)

Without any other change in my lifestyle, it did wonders for my bloodwork. Nearly as important, I now have NO stomach issues. They used to be a daily thing, bad enough that I never wanted to go shopping or visit or anything, because if I ate any food (or didn't eat any food) I might have a bathroom emergency.

While I'm already getting about 250% of the recommended amount of fiber, I want MORE MORE MORE! So I decided to find the Fiber One snack bars and brownies. Both have about 90 calories in them.

Today I tried the "Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownie". Um. Wow. So very much not a brownie. Not bad, but if you go in thinking it will be brownie-like at all... just don't. There was a very slight chocolate taste. Mostly it tasted like burnt coffee. (And no peanut butter flavor at all.) BUT! One brownie is 20% of your daily fiber needs! So that rocks!

No worries about eating too much fiber, so long as you drink plenty of water.

In other news, the best icons ever were being offered for sale on teenycom. They look like cave paintings! And for only $1!

So I ordered some. My four -- three of Penny, one of Ellie. I don't need more icons, and it took me all day to think of what to get them of, but I liked the style so much I really wanted some. And only $1 each! Wow!

You'd be better off making these, I suspect. ;)

Fiber One chocolate peanut butter haystacks

That's awesome, though, that you've figured out what was likely causing your digestive issues. :)

Fiber One is good for so much. You can even make rice crispy treats with it! (Though I suppose it would need a new name then...)

I had a box of fiber one bars around the house once, near the computer, because I sometimes get "stopped up". My boyfriend noticed them and ate one because it looked like a candy bar (granola type) and tasted good, like a candy bar, and so he kind of ate another one, and then another one, followed by another one. The sudden, extreme influx of fiber caused a different kind of sudden, extreme OUTGO, so to speak. He was amused and somewhat chagrined.

Ah ha ha ha, poor guy! Yeah, you have to start slow with these things. :D (I still have some minor gas problems *cough* but it's so worth it!)

May I also recommend BeneFiber... goes RIGHT IN MAH OATMEAL.

I was considering that, too! And chewable fiber pills, WHICH I ALREADY HAVE!

Sidenote: Haken's letter made me all sorts of happy that she remembered him. :) I keep pondering getting him active again!

I love BeneFiber, it really is tasteless, I've put it in drinks. ... does this conversation make you feel old. HELLO INTERNET, OLD LADIES TALK ABOUT FIBER.

But seriously, Fiber One. You can also use it to bread chicken, like bread crumbs? Put it in a ziploc bag and roll a rolling pin on it until it's crumby, and use it like breadcrumbs. TOTALLY AWESOME.

Also, Lu will always remember Haken. If only everyone laid down the rules of interaction upon the first meeting.

I know! All my happiness over fiber makes me feel SO OLD.

Oooh, BeneFiber can go into cold things, too? That would be handy for yogurt!

I've never tried it on chicken, BUT I WILL! I could see it working really well!

Awwww. <3

BeneFiber can go into cold things, too. I thought I'd mentioned it a few years ago when I discovered it while doing Weight Watchers. I won't add it to, say, iced tea, but I've put it in my hot coffee, oatmeal, yogurt, macaroni'n'cheese, pretty much anything it can be mixed into that's even vaguely liquid or saucey.

Yep you did! I remembered that you used it, but not the details.

I'm going to look for it next time I go to the store. :D

Inner thoughts: Eating a wicker basket.

Eh, close enough.

Haha. It really does look like little sections of a stick. Luckily it doesn't taste like them at all!

Your fiber solution intrigues me. I, too, have those kinds of stomach problems. It's to the point where I avoid long trips and places where I'll be out of reach of a bathroom because I never know when/where they will strike.

Stopping soda and fizzy drinks has really helped, but not cut it out completely. Maybe I'll try an uptick in fiber?

Do you drink sugar sodas or diet? I've heard from other people that artificial sweeteners make such issues worse. I've cut down my drinking of Diet Coke for other reasons (kidney stones D: ), but I haven't been able to totally cut it out.

But fiber is so painless. I thought the twiggy cereal would taste awful, but it's really not bad at all. I use vanilla soy milk with it, which helps, too.

I used to have to take imodium every day, now I've taken it once in the last month. (Nerves, I think. The first day headed onto the cruise.) It's a wonderful thing, I hope it works for you, too!

Those Fiber One brownies taste great I found. Was shocked. Sooooo good. :) I can't eat many of them sadly because they actually give me really horrible gas and don't help with the fiber issue. (But they sure as hell taste good. The bars too.)

Ah, that's too bad! I find gas is a common problem now. *cough* But something like Gas-X does the trick, so yay!

I'm glad you like the taste though! Maybe some other flavor will work better for me. Tomorrow I'll try one of the others.

Yeah, anything that is meant to add fiber by means of some sweet treat does that to me. :(

Mostly I find that eating green veggies, and cutting out processed foods really helps. For all I know that you don't like veggies much. :( I eat a lot of broccoli, and carrots, with apples, oranges, and tomatoes as fruits. Almost never get gas these days. Thankfully.

I'm glad you like veggies! They're the best way to get fiber, you get all the other good stuff with them. :)

I wish you did! I can't even imagine not having veggies. Would eat more corn and peas too, but there's not a decent market around that I can easily get to that has them fresh. I hate frozen stuff with a passion, and canned has so much salt. :(

From: [identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com
Unfortunately corn and peas don't count! I like both, but they're carbs, not veggies. (Or, well, carbs and veggies? But they count as carbs for me, so it's something bready vs peas -- BREAD WINS!). But I do wish I liked other ones!

Hopefully I'll have time to go to the farmer's market this weekend and maybe find something interesting to try.

For my purposes, they are considered "grains", and not "vegetables" because of the very high level of carbohydrate-to-other stuff.

Yeah. It's sad, the veggies I like... aren't. (Though it does make sense.)

I eat the Fiber One brownies pretty regularly - I don't usually have a stomach for the big bowls of cereal I used to have as a kid, but I usually want to have something sweet to get my day going, you know? They work!

I'd say I eat somewhat more than the average person (I'm 6'2", waddayaexpect!), but I never have stomach problems. I always assumed I was just blessed with a stomach of steel, but it could just be enough fiber in the diet. I do like my Smart Pop popcorn as well, and that's pretty fibery! Maybe I'll go a week without getting the bars and see if that changes anything.

That's a good idea to use it for breakfast! I usually bring something to work anyway.

I'm loving having cereal! Unfortunately it's not a big bowl (one cup, measured + milk), but it's actually a pretty yummy thing.

Mmmm popcorn!

Maybe I'll go a week without getting the bars and see if that changes anything.

FOR SCIENCE!

Those stomach issues run in our family. My grandmother always had it, my mom has it, I have it. I've noticed certain types of food make it worse, but sometimes they don't, and... eh. It's weird. But sadly, fiber doesn't seem to help me much. We already eat whole grain pretty much everything at my house (bread, pasta, etc.) just because we all think it tastes better. On the other hand, my tummy troubles aren't so bad, most of the time. I've learned that if I'm careful what I eat and how much (especially the last) I can avoid it... usually... heh heh heh.

Also! Those icons! I love them. I actually did something I never do and got two of them, with the straggly remnants of my old PayPay account. Yay for lovely, cheap icons! Thanks for pointing it out!

Yeah, that happens with me, too. Sometimes something will make me sick 90% of the time, sometimes 5%. So annoying, I couldn't even adjust my diet around foods because anything might make me sick.

I'm glad you can avoid it in other ways!

Yay, I hope they come out well! :D I really love that style.
