Being in the closet is interesting (RL)
Jul. 7th, 2012 06:34 pmIn my continued Stuff Reduction Campaign, I finished cleaning my linen closet (easy, just two shelves had been left from last weekend) and started tackling my bedroom closet.
It's like being on an archaeology dig. The deeper you get, the older things are. When anything falls onto the floor, it soon got buried by newly falling things, sort of like what happens in a forest.
I found things I had forgotten I made, let alone had: I had painted a denim jacket with a scene from the Lion King. Big picture covering the back, two little ones on the front, and a quote inside. Quite cool and well done! I have only the vaguest memories of making it (15+ years ago).
I found envelopes of photos. Not mailing envelopes, but the kind you used to get pictures back in when you dropped a roll of film off to be developed (are places like that still around?). A ton of pictures to my visit to San Francisco in 1995 (ha ha, I never would have guessed I would eventually end up moving here!)
A tote bag from a search engine optimization that we went to "spy" on when I worked at Alta Vista, dated 2000. That was an amusing time of my life -- Alta Vista (the Google of the time) did all the spam defense work by hand. That's quite laughable now. (Ha ha, and stickers to visit the site of a "new search engine" -- Google!)
I have so many VCR tapes. Are they even worth donating? (I later found a VCR, too. Donating them together.)
And more photos, from 1998, of our "Boston Moot" -- a meet up of people from GarouMUSH. I think I recognize one person (Mark), but the rest are a blank. I THINK one might be
accipiter...
Photos from meeting up with FDC MUCK people in Disney World from 1996. I recognize more of them, though can't name any.
Handcuffs *cough* ...with no keys. Dare I donate them or would some kid just put them on and not be able to take them off? :P
My goal had been to throw out or donate anything I don't use anymore, but I find that for some things I don't want to. What in the world will I do with three big stacks of Garou trading card game cards? I don't know, but I want them.
...Why in the world did I save big floppy disks with my then-OS on them? Goodbye, DOS 3.30! And DeskMate, my desktop program. Some I wish I could still use: An "Animal Quest" game -- "Experience wildlife as an animal!", sounds like it must have been fun.
Scary: I found a 20 year old diary. I only skimmed it, but so much remains the same (weight, hate work). Disturbingly, I wrote that I wish my sister was dead!!! Arg, I can't believe I wrote that. Also, I had been obsessed with some guy on trial for murder (WTF, younger self?), I saved a ton of news clippings about him and went to see his house... (Seriously, WTF younger self?!).
Sad: I used to be able to draw pretty well, I found lots of stuff I did. Why did I stop? I can barely make stick figures now.
Wish I had a scanner so I could better save some of the photos and things I drew.
As you might have guessed, this post was written almost real-time. I started it almost 8 hours ago and I'm almost done now. SO MUCH STUFF. Two big black trashbags to throw out (so heavy! How am I going to lug them down the street to the dumpster?), twice that amount to donate. (Sadly I'm going to donate it to Salvation Army. I do not want to, but they're willing to come pick it up, and I can't find anyone else who will. Laziness wins this day.) My closet is so nice and empty! There are a couple boxes left of stuff I want to keep, but it's so nice and neat and empty now! :D
I'm going to be SO ready to move, once I'm ready to move.

Date: 2012-07-09 03:29 pm (UTC)Since I'm donating a VCR as well, I feel okay donating the tapes. Maybe they can sell them together!

Date: 2012-07-09 03:30 pm (UTC)Actually, I think they're still around. I used to use babblefish now and then, before Google offered a translation service.
*checks the website* Hm. Looks like Yahoo bought AV.

I don't really want to ask because I'm sure the real explanation isn't nearly as interesting as the several I thought up while chuckling over this.
