Holy crap, Texas. Texas Republican Party Calls For Abstinence Only Sex Ed, Corporal Punishment In Schools, and an end to teaching "higher order thinking skills".

The abstinence only thing is horrible but not surprising.
That they want teachers to be able to hit kids is boggling.
But schools want to stop kids from thinking? Quote:

...they oppose the teaching of "higher order thinking skills" -- a curriculum which strives to encourage critical thinking -- arguing that it might challenge "student's fixed beliefs" and undermine "parental authority."

Yeah. The only way they'll keep their base is to prevent kids from being able to critically think about things and to make decisions for themselves.

This is really, really sad.

I'm sure I could form a negative opinion about this if I thought about it but I had that kind of attitude beaten out of me a long time ago.

Good boy. Now go read the bible and then go straight to bed. Remember! No thinking!

This whole thing is making it really hard for me to go without bashing Texas a bunch. I mean, I know it's got that stereotype that they are all right-wing religious nuts but gotta try to not generalize and stuff like that. But then you see parts of Texas actually being that stereotype it's hard to really get past it.

I think there might be something wrong with just most of the south of the US. Texas is like religion crazy, Arizona is immigrant crazy, Florida is just plain crazy, California is...well it's California. Although I never hear anything about New Mexico, Mississippi only really comes up when things flood, and Louisiana just gets screwed over a bunch it seems. In fact, as an outsider it seems like Alabama is the only one that hasn't lived up to it's reputation for me yet. Maybe it just does a better job at containing it's madness from international media.

Same. I know there are some fine people who live there, but...

Yeah. Again, I hate to generalize, but... So hard not to.

News reporters go into Alabama, but none come out...

that's just great. Thanks Thistle. Now I equate thinking with masturbation. Yea...hot ladies thinking...so sexy.

Oh, wait, it totally is sexy. Ignore what Texas tells you - keep thinking. Yea. Think faster. Ohhh yea.

Isn't it? I cannot believe that Texas is the same country as the rest of us. ...the rest of us sane people. ...this little section of the country. ...wait, you mean *I'M* the odd man out?

So doomed. D:

Just as bad here in TN. I live 15 minutes from the courthouse where the Scopes Monkey Trial took place.

I'm a scientist. My wife decided a while ago that it isn't safe for me to interact with the local public. She screens people she meets before I'm allowed to interact with them at all.

I did run. That's how I got here. I grew up in South Carolina. Slowly moving west, hehe.

For what it's worth, my wife may be offered a job working for a Chocolate company in California in the next year or so. I told her we should seriously consider it - I'm a computer scientist with a background in AI. I hear I can make pretty good in Cali. The living expenses out there are kind of scary compared to where I am now (currently building a 2200 sq ft house walking distance from the delicious-food part of downtown for under 250k)

I fully approve of the idea of moving to CA! :D Other than the prices, yeah. I pay more in one month of rent than some of my non-CA friends do in six months of mortgage payments...

Well, it is kind of what happens when you believe in faith, but don't believe in it much.

I mean, you believe that your way is the best way, that any other way will send you to Hell, but you don't believe that the children that you have for (at minimum) 16 out of 24 hours on a weekday and all weekend long will come to believe as you do, because you ... what, can't build a strong case against evolution? Because you believe that this teacher, who, along with math and phys ed and lunch and art and music is ALSO going to completely bend your child's mind in a way that your raising of your children all the rest of the time can't counteract?

Man, if they are that unsure of the facts and truth and reality behind their case as all that, it gives me hope that even THEY know that they are full of shit.

I just read that article to Alex and then had to calm his very loud ranting so it wouldn't bother the neighbors.

WTF, Texas. I think it cuts all the deeper cuz we have a kid now. That... goes against pretty much everything we want to teach her. I am so glad we don't, and don't plan on, living in Texas.

The funny thing is, the diary I found while cleaning over the weekend? I saw a mention in it about how low rents are in Dallas TX and that maybe I should think about moving there. HA HA HA HA NO.

You know what, I am indifferent about the Abstinence Only Sex Ed. Kids learn about sex from peers/TV/internet anyway. I am conflicted about corporal punishment—it's highly likely that there is a deeper issue at work. But yeah, that putting an end to teaching "higher order thinking skills" to avoid undermining parental authority is just...

If kids undermining parental authority is really such a problem, why not just outlaw puberty altogether? I am quite sure kids don't need critical thinking skills to undermine authority figures. They just need to be kids.

Shhh! They might take you up on that idea and try to outlaw puberty. (I could see them putting drugs in the water...)

The thing about kids learning from their peers/TV/internet is that you really cannot count on the other kids to be informed, or for the media to present it usefully. Sure, a few might be, but misinformation -spreads-. My area has abstinence-only sex ed (they even leave sex out of basic BIOLOGY, sperm + egg stuff gets taught with zero mention of things like how sperm GETS there) and the stuff I grew up hearing was just... I'm thankful I had the internet.

I grew up with a disturbing amount of peers believing you can't get pregnant the first time, or if you exercise after and do jumping jacks. They will learn about sex, yes. They may well never be taught about SAFE sex. It needs to be taught.

Agreed. Also "or if you exercise after and do jumping jacks" made me snicker (even though it's not funny). Shake that sperm right out of you!

gets taught with zero mention of things like how sperm GETS there

... Magical sperm! Just sort of arrives.

Well...I am not saying learning from peers/TV/internet is a good thing. It's just that peers/TV/internet generally win out over sex ed. And to be honest, internet isn't a terrible resource. A bit of critical thinking skills can go a long way.

...Oh, right. Yeah, Texas is screwed.

...internet isn't a terrible resource

You must live with a very different internet than mine. I had a friend in college who, quite literally, learned everything he knew about sex from the internet. His first sexual experience landed both him and his lady in the hospital with various injuries.
