I'd like to write something meaningful and deep. Something like a letter to the Republicans, reminding them that us white folks are not the majority anymore and they might want to think about halting the attack on non-whites, but know what? My words are gone. My brain feels like mush. I feel exhausted. Relief.

I know this is a useless hope, but please, Republicans, please try to nominate someone less horrible next time. I can handle losing, really I can, but only if the guy on the other side isn't a scary, horrible, abusing, bully, nonstop lying... Oh look, I found my words. :P

I'm looking forward to going back to my normal posts. I bet most of you are, too! Thanks for sticking with me through all my political flailings lately. I was honestly very, very scared about all this.

If I could write a letter, it would go something like this:

Dear Republican Party,

Please come back to me. Please remember that I am a person, and that I vote. Please stop arguing about things that make me want to tear out all my hair and just do whatever it takes to enable the living to live at least ok, ok? If the living know for a fact that they won't starve, be homeless, get beaten, or otherwise treated like dirt once they HAVE a baby, MAYBE more of the living will go ahead and HAVE the baby!
Remember when we used to pay attention to how to actually save money instead of score points? Me, neither, but wouldn't it be nice to consider it?

- me

See, all you had to do was run the idea of fiscal conservatism and you'd have won that election. But noooo, that'd be too easy; let's argue about gay marriage and abortion instead, that should probably work. Bet that Ron Paul guy probably could have won, oh well.

Kind of curious to see if they will reinvent themselves in 4 years or death spiral like the Liberal Party is working on doing up here...

I would say I'm happy it's over since now I get my normal radio shows back but that would be lying. They'll spend the next month arguing about how the results will change the future (which they would do regardless of who won) and then they'll talk about the War on Christmas for awhile.

Ron Paul wouldn't have survived the spotlight. He was like the crazy uncle who seems reasonable 90% of the time...but this one family reunion, he got a couple drinks in him and started off into crazy conspiracy theories and racist tirades.

I hope things go back to normal, but at least today my facebook and other news sources are about 40% butthurt.

Yeah. Paul Ryan is against abortion even in the case of rape. I know he won his (House?) seat again, but hopefully he never goes further than that.

Ron Paul ≠ Paul Ryan. Paul Ryan was GOP-VP candidate. Ron Paul was former libertarian Pres candidate in 2008, and ran for GOP nomination in 2012 (and was stomped pretty hard).

... Too many people with only first names. My brain translated Ron Paul into Paul Ryan.

Speaking of, did you hear the joke about that?

"Why did Mitt Romney pick Paul Ryan as his running mate?"

"Romney has no first name and Ryan has two."

Probably right, but weren't all the GOP nominees basically like that anyways just with varying degrees of craziness? At least he knew about how things worked and appeared to have an actual plan. How much it would have worked or if it was much of a plan at all I can't say but he certainly seemed the most competent of them all.

But don't you know? The Republicans are the only ones with ~morals~ and they have to tell the rest of us what to do and how to live! For our own good!

Kind of curious to see if they will reinvent themselves in 4 years or death spiral like the Liberal Party is working on doing up here...

I'd do a dance if they died out, so long as they weren't replaced with something worse. The American God Party or some such crap.

There are already crazy fringe parties. They just don't harbor enough of the vote to matter, or even to register as a blip on radar.

What the Republicans have to do now, if they hope to have a chance in 2016, is that the hard-line social conservative shit has to go. The objection to gay marriage cut a sizable chunk out of the conservative base, though the far right will never admit it. There are gay conservatives, not a small number of whom fit right into the Republican age 35+ White Male demographic. Abortion will continue to be an issue with some segments because they completely believe it to be Murder, but the party is going to have to give on that issue. Civilized countries allow Abortion.

Frankly, if Romney had run on a purely fiscal platform and ignored all the social issues entirely, this election would've shaped up quite differently.

2016 will be make or break time for the Republican party. If they come up with a candidate who knows to keep his mouth shut on certain things (or even better, sticks with a line about Personal Freedom means allowing abortion and gay marriage), expect a republican president in 2016. I hear Jeb Bush is already preening for it, which gives him a strong chance to take Florida. The Republican base will vote for anything at that point, so the question is whether he can Not Scare Off Moderates (which will double as Not Scaring Democrats Into Action).

If the religious whackos form a new party, all the better as it will weed them out of the voting pool entirely (like libertarians now).

I hope there are more people like me, who just won't vote for anyone named Bush, period. (Exception being if it were an unrelated one.)

And lord, a president named "Jeb"? They might as well set up a moonshine still behind the White House. /shallow

I heard a scary story on NPR yesterday, about how the big money/big names in the Republican party are running out the more moderate ones, replacing them with people who are unwilling to compromise. Because that's just what that party needs, right?

I'm really worried they might push Marco Rubio in 2016. Hispanic voters are such a big voting block, how many of them would vote for him just so they can have the first Hispanic president? (I have this silly vision in my head that if the Republicans do do that, the Democrats will also find a Hispanic person to nominate, thus equaling it out.)

Wow, I didn't expect you to jump on the Sarah Palin bandwagon so soon! (I kid, I kid.)

The scary thing is that if it is not Romney, it's going to be someone just like him. Around 72% of the voters are white, and close to 60% of that group voted for Romney. There is something resembling a strategy there, even though I can't say I am a fan of it.

*froths* There are still people out there who like Palin! Arg!

And yet white people are now the minority in this country. If only everyone else would vote more!

Don't know where you heard that. As of 2010, Whites consist of 72% of US population (223,553,265 out of ~ 314,731,000)

The 2010 Census numbers actually match the exit poll numbers fairly well. 13% of the total voters were African-American, which is pretty close to 12.6% in the 2010 Census. There are some discrepancies (3% Asian voters versus 4.8% in 2010 Census for instance), but overall it seems like the voter turnout is a fair reflection of the country as a whole.

Might be from the percentage of white non-Hispanic newborns being under 50% of newborns in 2011 (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-05-17/non-white-u-s-births-become-the-majority-for-first-time.html); I remember that one mainly 'cause of a neat cartoon about it (http://www.mattbors.com/blog/2012/05/23/white-babies-outnumbered/).

And ha ha, love the cartoon.

o.O Seriously? Maybe I misheard the story then. NPR ran a story on it a few months back. (I'm afraid to google it from work, I'd likely come up with a bunch of white power sites.)

Careful googling confirms you're right! Looks like 2024 will be when we become the minority.

All this time I was thinking the wrong thing!

Washington joined Maryland and Maine in being the first states to vote in gay marriage. A very successful night. :)

(We also just legalized recreational marijuana use... I did not expect that one to pass!)

Happy day! :DDD Now if California would only stop trying to vote it out again... (Seriously, WTF California?)

And, while I've never done it and have no interest in it, yay for marijuana, too! It's stupid that it's against the law.

I still have this... well, I wouldn't say it's a hope, but it's an idea at least, that at some point between now and Jan. 21st, Romney will give an interview and admit he trolled the entire election.
