I never go to state fairs, so I miss trying all the fun foods. I never had a deep fried cookie, never had a deep fried candy bar, the last funnel cake I had was almost twenty years ago. (I vow to one day try chocolate covered bacon.) Now and then one of these wacky foods appears outside of fairs, and I make an effort to try them then.

Lays released chocolate covered potato chips, sold only at Target:

You can't tell by that picture, but the bag is very small. Think the size you pick up when you get a sandwich at Subway or some other sandwich chain. A single-serving sized bag. The $3.50 price would seem very high for that amount.

The chips have chocolate on only one side:

(Photos not mine.)

So you'd think with the tiny bag and the half-covering of chocolate, the $3.50 price price would be out of line, but I don't think it is. The chocolate is really, really thick. Like three times as thick as the chip. (I didn't get an odd bag, other reviewers have mentioned how thick the chocolate is too.) If it had chocolate on both sides, that would be too much.

How did it taste? On first bite, I thought I didn't like it. Salt + chocolate = Yay! Salt + potato = not so yay. But then I ate a second one and a third one, and I stopped tasting the potato and just tasted the chocolate/salt.

Interestingly (probably because of the thickness of the chocolate) it only took a couple to be satisfying. While they were good, I didn't have a hard time putting the rest of the bag away.

Will I finish the bag? For sure.
Would I buy them again? No. I need neither more chocolate nor more potato chips in my life.
Would I buy them again if I had no issues with weight or other health matters? Yeah. Even at that price, they're worth it.

...holy cow. The tiny bag has FIVE servings in it! A serving is four chips. If you can stick to one serving, the calories aren't too awful (160). I wish they put the number of servings and calories as the biggest items on food packaging (kind of like how the warning is so big on cigarette containers).

Some folks don't like sweet/salt mixed, are you one of them? Or something else?

No, I love salted caramel. It's the grease that does it for me. Lays always feel greasy to me.

Ah! Yes, that is an issue with them.

(I vow to one day try chocolate covered bacon.)

Cost Plus has chocolate-covered bacon / bacon chocolate bars, which I really liked (but which are waaay overpriced, imo)

Chocolate-covered potato chips is not a thing that I would think would be tasty... but I tried pumpkin spice tortilla chips the other day, which was another combination that seemed rather odd in theory, and they were actually really good! Still, I think chocolate + potato chip probably won't work for me just based on texture, but I am intrigued to know this is a thing that exists...

Oh hey, thanks for the lead!

It does seem like a really odd combo, doesn't it? It seems to work though. (There's so much chocolate it overpowers the potato.)

I have a chocolate drizzled bacon recipe I can send you....

Thank you! I want to buy it premade though. If I make it myself, I'll have a whole pound of bacon and a bunch of chocolate to eat. Dangerous! (Yummy yummy danger...)

I had some at the fair last year and it was cold, flabby, greasy gross. I bought some made from this recipe at a derby bout and it was LOVE!

Five servings? I think a lot of people would just eat the whole bag at one sitting. 800 calories is more than you should have for one meal. I guess we should all read the small print!

It's a tiny bag, it would be easy to eat it all in one sitting! Arg!

i wonder if my target has them?

They should. It should be all Targets (unless they sell out). At mine, it was in the chocolate/candy section, not the chips.

I'm trying to picture a food section in my Target... Might be different in Australia?

Date: 2013-11-30 08:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com
Hmm, yeah, might be US only? Targets in that end of the world don't have a food section? In US, some have a generic food area (chips, candy, pre-packaged foods) and some have an outright grocery as well (meats, milk, etc).

I don't remember food in my local target aside from gift baskets and boxes of chocolate.
We miss out on a lot of things I've learnt lately!

Are deep fried cookies covered in batter?

I had a deep fried Mars bar in Glasgow - Scotland's pretty famous for deep frying everything, haha, and the chippy to which I went whilst I was there had it, heh. It was battered, which I didn't expect, but when I had it, I didn't taste the batter at all. Rather, the Mars bars was warm and melted inside my mouth, and it tasted amazing! Totally worth the £1 I paid for it.

Salt + chocolate is an amazing combination indeed.

Yep! So the inside/cookie part gets all melty and gooey.

Mmm, the fried Mars bar sounds amazing. One day I shall get to try one!

Trader Joe's has some chocolate covered potato chips that I tried awhile back. I didn't like them, I think because the chocolate was milk chocolate and thus too sweet. If it was dark chocolate, the sweet/salt chocolate/potato contrast would be more interesting.

In any case, I didn't finish the bag.

This was milk chocolate and it was VERY sweet. I was wishing it was dark as well (or just less chocolate in general).

Trying these chips made me realize that bacon drizzled with chocolate is probably better than dipped in chocolate. Alas, there is such a thing as too much chocolate.

Head out to a Target! :D In mine, they were in the candy section, not the chip section. I almost gave up looking when I didn't see them with the chips.

I feel left out, we have none of the things you mention here in Australia. lol

Is the cookie coated in batter or something? I've heard about deep fried Mars bars from a Scottish friend, but never cookies.

Yep! They take a cookie (usually an oreo) and dip it in batter, then deep fry it. Supposedly the cookie gets all melty and gooey. Sounds really good.

Hopefully you'll get them soon too!
