I must really be out of the loop on TV things. I was looking for something to watch, and a title caught my eye. The Last Ship. "Hmmm," I said to myself. "That sounds like the perfect title for a post-apocalyptic story! I wonder if it could really be?" And it was!

The series is only three episodes long so far, shown on TNT if you're in the US. I watched them all this afternoon. The show's not perfect. For example: It starts in the arctic, where characters repeatedly state it's "50 below", yet none of them have their faces covered and all of them have loose hoods that keep blowing back from their heads. They have a dog with them (shepherd) with no protection at all. They spend a good deal of time out there, and end up with nothing but rosy cheeks! Some of the dialogue is a little cheesy too, and unfortunately the bad guys are kind of stereotypes.

But! Even with that stuff, I loved it. The plot was exactly to my liking: A virus killed off at least 80% of all humans, all the governments of the world have fallen, just these 200-something people on a Navy ship that was out to sea and thus not infected are trying to survive.

If you get TNT, or if it's shown in your area, I recommend it if you like that kind of story!

In diet news, today was the first day with no loss, though at least I didn't gain. I don't think I ate worse today, or at least not much worse.

I made my own broth. Then I remembered that last time I did it, I said I would never do it again. Eight hours cooking on the stove (in the middle of summer!), and it still came out blah. How could it taste like only slightly salty water? I used carrots, onions, a lot of garlic, a couple bay leaves, salt and pepper, "poultry seasoning", and a chicken carcass with meat left on it.

Speaking of, I wonder how long broth will stay good in the freezer? I still have my last two batches in there, which were made in winter or earlier. (I'm going to be having only broth and water for two days pre-surgery, so I figured it would be good to make more.)

I'm so not ready for work tomorrow. Eating is going to be much much harder. Blah.

And the Arctic Terns they were studying wouldn't be living in those -50 conditions in Alaska.. :-p We watch it as well.. aside from the issue with the weather thing and the stereotype of the Russian bad man, it's pretty good.

I don't mind Russians as bad guys, if they just hadn't been so stereotypical as well.

Ha! I hadn't known that about the Terns!

I think there's a new ep showing tonight. And did you see there are a lot of freebie videos here (http://www.amazon.com/Last-Ship-Phase-Falling-Machine/dp/B00KPQ7TR6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405303696&sr=8-1&keywords=the+last+ship)? Background stuff and interviews with the characters and such.

Thanks for the television recommend. I'll see if it's shown in Canada or if there's a way to watch it. I'm obsessed with the Arctic and think I'd want to watch this despite the factual inconsistencies. I've heard about Arctic researchers playing epic games of hockey on clear days and donning only shirts and jeans as they get heated up. They'd not do this just heading outside, though.

I wish you the best on your weight loss.

It's showing on the Space channel in Canada.

Not to put a damper or spoiler on things, but the Arctic bit is just a setup for the beginning of the show.

The show is somewhat Military Porn and a bit of Rah Rah America Fuck Yeah, but still fairly enjoyable.

It's funny, but I never thought I'd like Military Porn, but I love shots of their ship and seeing how everything works. I wish some of the dialogue was less cheesy though.

"Revenge is a dish best served cold."
"So let's get eating!"

Kinda cringe-worthy, but still, all in all I really like it.

Sorry, like Doxxxicle said, it only starts out there. That part is important to the storyline, but as of ep #3 they haven't been back (and it seems unlikely that they will).

It's still enjoyable though!

And thanks! :)

That's a good question. But without seeing the exact parameters of the set-up (how things were prepared, how much water, etc.), I can't really answer that.

One thing, though: if you do do it again, try doing it in a crockpot. It's much easier.

Also, a tip: if you want a deeper flavor, try roasting the vegetables in a very hot (450F) oven for 20-30 minutes tossed with a little bit of canola or olive oil until browned before adding them to the water and chicken.

Speaking of, I wonder how long broth will stay good in the freezer? I still have my last two batches in there, which were made in winter or earlier.

how long will chicken stock last n the freezer

Spot check has people saying anywhere from 2-12 months or more.

Personally, I've done it for longer than a year to no ill effect, as long as it was properly sealed.

Yeah, I should have whipped out the crock pot. It would have produced less heat in addition to being easier to clean and just easier in general.

Personally, I've done it for longer than a year to no ill effect, as long as it was properly sealed.

Good to know! It's all sealed up in containers.

Sorry to hear about your flavorless broth. I've always had decent results when I've made it.

I'd like to try this method sometime, though:
