thistlechaser: (Cat shrimp (hungry now?))

Just to keep things honest and keep a written record of what's happening: Yesterday was Official Weigh-In Day, and unfortunately I gained a pound and a half. I'm not panicking for two reasons: 1) My period is due today. Google tells me weight gain (water) is actually a real thing and not just a myth/excuse, so that might be what it is. 2) I've been eating the same as previous weeks, other than a Poptart mistake (400 calories) and one of my "final meals" on Friday (calorie-heavy fried chicken). I'm not blaming the chicken/Poptarts, as I weighted myself the day after and there was only a half-pound difference then.

If I don't lose the pound and a half (and hopefully more) next week, then I'll revisit the issue. It wouldn't be hard to cut my calories further of need be, but as of now, I'm going to keep on keeping on as-is.

Related note: Very disturbingly, I'm really coming to like rice cakes. They're the only form of bread (or rather, bread-like substances) I've had in three weeks now, other than two trips to Subway. (Edit: I'm not cutting bread out because it's bread, but because it's calories I don't need.)

Still missing fast food daily, which is wacky as I didn't enjoy it when I was eating it, just ate it because it was fast and easy. I'd KILL for McDonald's fries and a big Wendy's burger and and and and. I also very much miss the food blogs (fast food reviews, news of new items, etc) I used to follow, but I really do think they made me eat more of that kind of thing.

Ugh, yes, the evil period throws EVERYTHING out of whack. I have specific pants for that week because nothing fits quite right.

Maybe you should subscribe to some foodie blogs. I really do believe that seeing that stuff does make you crave it so ditch the blogs about fast food and sign up for some of the Food Network "easy meals" or Taste of Home emails so you can get inspired! I was never into cooking before but now I'm starting to get the hang of it because I see those little ideas every day.

Good point. I could find healthy blogs instead. They're just a whole lot less fun to read. :P

LOL that is true. But maybe just some fresh food sorta sites, like what's in season and what to make out of it. Then your brain will be in fresh food mode! I mean, I know home cooking can be just as unhealthy as fast food sometimes, but most of the time, since you're in control of the process more, it's easier to find ways to make them healthier. In theory. :)

The mind is tricksy -- when you can't have something, you want it MORE.

Unfortunately, constantly telling yourself 'no' depletes your willpower until eventually you cave. :( (Further irony: apparently, willpower is replenished with food. Yet another reason why dieting is so difficult for so many people.)

Anyway, something that might help with cravings is to stop saying 'no' to yourself and instead say 'not yet' or 'later'. Not setting a hard line of denial can give your willpower muscles a break.

Hugs!

Yes, I use that trick. On Friday I can have one of my "final meals". One meal a week, something to look forward to. It helps soooo much sometimes.

My mind is more my enemy than my ally sometimes. :P

YES, the period weight gain thing is not a myth. My weight can fluctuate up to 5 pounds plus or minus depending on where I am in my cycle, and it suuuucks.

Hopefully that's what it was and it'll be gone next week then! :) Thanks!

Love the "die die die" tag. Definitely subscribe to healthy food blogs. How do you feel all 'round after eating healthy so far?

Oh oops! If I type 'die' it brings up that one and diet. I meant to pick diet! :P

Hungry, mostly. No better at all. Sometimes sad, too. If not for the need to lose weight, I wouldn't recommend this at all.

Oh yeah, the withdrawal is absolutely devastating to one's mood - I remember cutting out carbs for the first time - It was like PMS x50, headaches, irritability, and I'm pretty sure I destroyed villages in my sleep (so the 'die die die' tag seems appropriate). That goes away after about a month, though.

Just remember, when you see or hear about tempting foods like chicken strips, think about something ridiculous. Like this:

If you like rice cakes, then you ought to love stuff like Wasa flat breads. They don't have many calories, and I find them delicious. But then I was raised on that kind of thing (Swedish mother who lived on flat bread, cold boiled potatoes and pickled herring.).

Baked fries are still tasty and have way fewer calories. Once you're off the grease for a few years, none of the fast foods will taste good.

Thanks! I'll look for something like that next time I shop.

Yeah, I'm going to try the baked fries, too. There are a bunch of recipes around, so hopefully I'll find one that works.
