[livejournal.com profile] diello wrote a post about never having seen Star Wars before, and her first time watching it. I've only seen it once, and I was so young and it was so long ago (its original release?) that I've as good as never seen it either. However, being part of the geek/nerd culture, of course I've picked up a ton about it.

I intended to rewatch it this weekend, but unfortunately it won't run smoothly with FFXIV running, so it's something of an issue. I watched the first 15 minutes or so. Initial impression:

1) Wow, Space Balls really hit it on the nose.
2) Why in the world do they wear such big helmets? It's so silly looking.
3) Why does Darth Vader wears a mask? Especially one that looks plastic? (The first part of that is likely answered somewhere in the series, I know.)

(Edit: Another 15 minutes tonight before bed, total of 30 minutes in. Can't say I like Luke much, dislike C-3P0 a lot. Love the settings, and the effects are quite amazing for a movie that's going on 40 years old.)

All in all, it looks quite watchable, based on that first bit. I'm going to try to get offline tomorrow enough to watch the rest of it. I'd hate to get my Geek Card taken away if there's ever a pop quiz on it...

Poor Ellie New Cat has ear infections. Both ears. She's been shaking her head for a while, and I finally got to look into one, and it was full of wet, brown gunk. I figured it was ear mites, so took her to the vet. Nope, infections in both ears.

Unfortunately the treatment for it is ear drops twice a day, and ear cleaning every other day, for 10 days. This is only day one, and she's so traumatized. Grabbing/carrying/holding her against her will sends her into such fear, it breaks my heart to have to do it. Even though this is only the first day, she's already running and hiding when I take the medicine out of the fridge.

This is going to be a long ten days for us...

Poor Ellie! It is too bad we can't speak cat, to explain why.

Yeah. I keep telling her it'll make her ears feel better, but she just doesn't listen! Happily it's already working, she's hardly shaking her head at all now.

Star Wars is fun. Luke is pretty bland for a main character but even if the story centers around him it's not really about him.

C3PO spends a lot of time being rather perfuntual and annoying. I like him much better later!

Aww, poor kitty. Long ten days indeed!

Yeah, fun for sure. Agreed that Luke is bland, though boy did I think he was cute when I was a kid! Now I wouldn't look twice at him, heh.

Wait for Han...

Oh that's good to know! Based on what I remember and have heard, I bet I will like Han a whole lot.

Oh no, I hate having to give a cat treatments or meds! It's hard to stay calm and cheerful during that too, and they absorb our anxiety like a sponge. I hope she feels better soon, and that the ten days pass quickly!

Yep. I'm going to have to make extra time on work mornings so we can keep doing it slowly and calmly. I don't want her to pick up stress from me!

I've never seen Star Wars. It's just not appealing to me. But I know enough about it to keep up in conversations.

Poor kitty. Hope she feels better soon!

There are a surprising number of us who haven't or who good as haven't!

And thanks. :)

1.) Yes. Yes Spaceballs did.
2.) Because the seventies. BIG SHOES, BIG HAIR, BIG HELMET.
3.) Spoilers: he really, really loves Daft Punk.

My poor brother. His name is John Luke. He usually goes by Luke. But pretty much as soon as it was long enough gone by that the Star Wars jokes faded, Star Trek: TNG came out. He's gotten from both sends of things that begin with Star.

Poor Ellie. :( My girl Moon is like that. I pretty much have to dose her with anything when she eats, otherwise I can't catch her to do it.

2.) Because the seventies. BIG SHOES, BIG HAIR, BIG HELMET.

Haaaa I think you hit it right on the head! That's probably exactly why.

And thanks. Sometimes it's not so bad, but sometimes she's convinced that OH MY GOD NO WHY DO YOU WANT TO KILL ME? I THOUGHT YOU LOOOOOVED ME NOOOO!

Dog ears must be different from cat ears (duh, right?). The vet squirted something that looked like vaseline into both of her ears and that cleared it up over a few days.

I was fifteen or sixteen when SW first hit the theaters. That was the first real hit of SFX. When the ship appeared at the beginning of the film, in a theater, it went on forever and rumbled the whole place. SW never made it onto any of my fandoms, but I did enjoy the look.

That sounds a lot easier! I have antibiotic(?) drops to use in both ears, twice a day. Also I have a cleaner I have to use every other day. My cat is thrilled about it...

I remember that mumble! I think SW is one of those movies that is a whole lot better on the big screen.

Poor Ellie. Eek at ear drops. I'm an adult human and I wouldn't like those. I wish you both the best and her a quick recovery.

LOL yes, watching Spaceballs BEFORE seeing Star Wars can make it a little hard to take seriously anymore. Spaceballs may be one of the greatest Mel Brooks movies ever.

btw - Lucas messed with the special effects like a million times, added scenes etc. so you're not actually watching the same Star Wars that most of us grew up talking about. I mean, Luke is still whiny and 3P0 is a bit prissy, that's the same, but the stupid random CGI creatures, not so much. (Someday I will download the DeSpecialized Edition but it's like 16 GB and I need a blu-ray burner).

Poor kitty :( Cats are the worst when it comes to being sick, I swear. They are even more whiny than boys :P

Spaceballs was such a good movie, but you're right about it making it hard to take SW seriously.

Arg! That explains why the effects are so good! I kept saying to myself "This wouldn't be out of place in a movie made today...". I guess that's why. Arg. I'd rather have seen the true original.

Haha and cats so totally are.

No, mostly the special effects are THAT GOOD. There are a lot of complaints about stuff added after the fact, but a lot of it was cleaning up images for DVD. There is a bunch of stuff added, but the movies are really long, and the stuff added is noticeable in a few scenes.

The stuff they did decades ago is still better than a lot of the stuff done today, due to a combination of amazing effects and knowing how to shoot and edit them. It is like watching Jurassic Park today. Lots and lots of movies still don't do as good a job as a fully 20 year old movie.

Ah! That's good to hear. Thanks!

You're so right about Jurassic Park. It's still an amazing movie.

I have the Despecialized version. No blu-ray burner though - my home entertainment set up is all wifi file streaming and such (via raspBMC).

It is good but the sound is a little weird. Music is considerably louder than dialog. Good 5.1 system and it sounds very theatric but almost painful to me (wife thought it sounded fine - but she has asymmetric 35% hearing loss).

I just want to watch one with the original special effects and NO CGI JABBA IN MY NEW HOPE! UGH!!!!!!!

I thought the same thing about Space Balls when I watched! That's PRETTY MUCH how I even knew the Star Wars story when I was a kid (which is probably why I was surprised by how cool Leia is - not at all like Vespa).
Big helmets and Vader's mask: I didn't realize going in that his mask was so tiny in comparison with his head. I think merchandising and illustrations have steered me wrong there.

Date: 2014-09-02 08:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com
Yeah, agreed on his mask. Plus it really bothers me that it looks plastic! You'd think it'd be metal, that would be a lot safer...

I haven't seen more than a couple seconds of Leia yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing more!

Watching Star Wars for the first time now is an interesting experience. I just did it with a friend (she hadn't seen them) and she said the same thing, that Space Balls kind of ruined it for her.

Luke certainly isn't the coolest, but his character changes and has the most arc. He is annoying and brash in the first one, but he is supposed to be, he is like 16 or something and don't know nothing, he is lead by his emotions. He changes through the next two movies, becomes more mature.

Date: 2014-09-04 04:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com
Yeah. I still haven't watched much more than a half-hour of it, but I have more desire to go watch Space Balls again than finish it. There's nothing at all wrong with it, but Space Balls does the same thing with a lot more fun and humor.

Yep, exactly. That's why I don't hate Luke. He's a teenager, he's acting how he's supposed to be.

Thanks! I think one of her ears is much better, but the other has a ways to go still.
