This might get long-ish and potentially will be TMI (medical stuff and period), so cutting it.

My period made things really, really miserable. I would have been naked under the gown (which would have worked perfectly well, it was a big, comfortable gown), but because of my period, I had to use their underwear (one size fits all, ha) and their pads. The underwear did not fit, wouldn't even come up over my butt, and the pads are for after women give birth (so they're thick and giant). Plus cramps. This was the first time I had really been grumpy and annoyed after arriving at the hospital.

From about 5:15-7:15 was all prep stuff and a lot of waiting. Lots of questions confirming who I was and why I was there (making sure I knew). When they were ready to take me into the OR, they sent my mother to wait in the waiting room. They gave her a six digit ID number for me, so they could list my progress on a screen without using my name.

The OR was scary. They didn't knock me out before going in, so I moved onto the OR table myself. It was seriously cold in there, plus so much medical stuff and stark whiteness. I remember thinking people with medical kinks are crazy, heh. :P

I remember them giving me something to relax me, and nothing after that. Next thing I knew, I was in the recovery room. I had a good deal of pain at that point (high in my back, surprisingly, not my stomach/front at all) and I was having a hard time communicating. I remember thinking that this whole surgery thing was a bad idea.

Eventually they moved me to my room. I was still kind of out of it, but I think my mother was there waiting. I had a pain pump thing (I could give myself painkiller up to once per five minutes) and used it for a while. About 5 PM (~6 hours post-surgery) I used my last dose of it and haven't used any since. I'm really surprised at how little pain there is.

That night I had to use the CPAP machine, so of course I got no sleep (maybe 45 minutes total). I was pretty tired and miserable.

They were ready to release me early that morning, but the surgeon didn't have time to write up my discharge notes until 12 hours later, so I had to stay basically a whole extra day (sigh). At least they took the foley catheter out in the morning, that was the second worst thing after my period (goes into your bladder so you don't have to pee on your own). It's VERY uncomfortable, like having something stuck up inside your vagina as you try to sit, move, walk, whatever. Very uncomfortable.

We got home late-ish (like 9:30?), we had to stop at the pharmacy on the way home. I fell into bed and sleep (kind of broken) until about 7 this morning.

Unfortunately I'm allergic to something, and I have a rash from my chin down to my ankles. Very very itchy, it's driving me crazy. (Same thing happened when I was in the hospital with my leg back in December.)

The nurses use those self-inflating blood pressure cups, and I believe I got some kind of injury from them. They used them on my forearms, and the only real pain I have is my hands, wrists, forearms, and elbows. I've been icing them, but the pain is pretty bad.

So, all in all, everything's going good. I had two-thirds of a protein shake for breakfast and I'm sipping water as much as I can. No weight loss since going into the hospital, but I'm really not worried about that right now. I'm very happy to be home.

I have felt hunger twice, but it was mild and fleeting. Hopefully it won't happen again.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask! And thanks for all the well-wishes on previous posts. :)

You could check with whoever your primary care physician is on this, but when I had a similar thing back in January, all they did was recommend I take Zyrtec (or a generic equivalent) during the day, Benadryl as needed at night, and prescribed an anti-itch cream.

The reason I suggest checking with your PCP, though, is to make sure none of those will negatively interact with whatever he's got you on post-op. And he might be willing to prescribe the anti-itch cream over the phone (especially if you explain that you had the same kind of allergic reaction after your hospital stay earlier this year. The detergent allergy theory sounds like a very good one.)

I'd love an anti-itch cream! I'd do all sorts of things to have some now. :P

I did call my surgeon's office, he's going to be in later this morning, so his nurse will check with him on what to do.

Benadryl is so crazy, it knocks me right out! I sleep for hours after taking it. (Which is odd, since pre-surgery it did nothing for me.)

That's why you take it at night. :) Zyrtec is purportedly non-drowsy.

the new drug I just got is like "Benadryl on crack", and I have to take it three times a day, so I suspect I'm going to be sleeping a lot. However, I'm already less itchy, so it's worth it.

It'll take a few days/a week to lose the extra fluid from the hospital. Plus you're swollen. That's why there's no loss showing yet in the scale. :)

Looking forward to how this goes for you!

Sounds like you might be allergic to the detergent they use on their bedding. :( A friend of mine is and that body rash is totally what he gets.

I'm glad you are home and things went well beyond the rash. <3 <3

Regarding the OR, something similar happened to me when I had my gall bladder removed. They wheeled me in and moved me onto the table, and I was all "Wait, no, I'm still awake, aren't you supposed to knock me out first?" and then the next thing I knew I was waking up afterwards.

Of all things, my *shoulders* hurt like heck the night after the surgery. Like seriously, what was up with that?

Don't be afraid to take meds if you need them. I didn't really need the heavy-duty stuff after about a day, but I tried to wean myself off Advil a little too quickly and regretted it.

I've had laproscopic surgery too (gall bladder, too). Part of that surgery is they pump air into your abdominal cavity (so they can see what they're doing in there). This causes all kinds of what is called 'referred pain.' In short, the human nervous system is weird and you can feel pain in places that aren't the ones hurt.

I remember being knocked out - they stuck a brainwave monitor on my head and started injecting stuff. They started to adjust the laproscopic-spider-surgery-bot thing and I said "I'm still not out, guys." They were actually a little shocked. Called the anesthesiologist over who looked at my brain wave monitor, said 'You have a high tolerance huh?' I said 'Yep, and I'll come out of it quick too.' He had a few words with his nurse, the gist of it was obviously "I'll handle this one." I saw the second syringe hit the IV and was out. I half-remember opening my eyes and seeing the big spider-bot thing lowered over me. Next thing I remembered was bumping the doors coming out of the OR. Then I started screaming. I was in a lot of pain and they said I shouldn't be awake yet. They quickened the pace to the recovery room and they started putting stuff in my IV.

3 syringes later and I was fiiiiiiiiiine.

Amusingly, that experience got me out of jury duty. I was on a jury for voir dire on a malpractice suit. Lady freaked out during a Caesarian - she was numbed up but could still feel movement and pressure of the procedure.

When asked if anyone had experienced coming out of anesthesia early, I retold that. And then the story about having my wisdom teeth removed and how I came to in the middle of having an impacted tooth hammer&chiseled out.

The lady turned green and started dry heaving. Her lawyer used one of his limited juror rejections to get me out of the courtroom as fast as possible.

I am so glad you are willing to share the medical stuff! I've never had surgery, but it's nice to know what to expect if/when I do someday.

Glad that so far you haven't really felt hungry, I think probably that will be worth all the crap if nothing else.

VERY sorry you had to deal with your period during this, HOLY SHIT WHAT A HORRIBLE MESSY PAIN. It's like 2014, when do we get our robot bodies again?

I know, seriously. How are periods such a problem still? I want some pill to turn off all reproductive functions until they're needed. Blah!

I'm glad it's useful to read! That's why I'm posting about it, for those who never had surgery or are thinking about doing this and would like a view into it.

I actually have one! Don't know if it would work for you or if you can even do hormonal BC, but the the BC pill I'm on is called Microgestin, it's free with my insurance, and it makes me never have a period ever.

I have menstruated like, three times in the last five years, because occasionally I skip a month to make sure everything is still working down there.

It is awesome, do recommend. Apparently this is a side effect in 20% of ladies who take it.

Oh that rocks! I'll have to look into it.

I tried that Crystal Sky protein powder. It didn't really work for me, but I tried it in water -- I think it would be better in yogurt or something. Edit: Except the color, I loved that, it totally worked for me.

Yeah, the Crystal Sky is just a weird fruit punchy blend. I liked the ones that weren't blended a lot better. They are definitely better in yogurt, I think maybe because they foam up so much in the bottles... it keeps the drink itself from being very thick, and I like a thicker shake. I only had that flavor and the lemon tea as shakes, all the other ones I had in yogurt. I should probably add that on my reviews. Their other brand, matrix, is a lot thicker as a shake. And also turns insane colors. Every time one of them does it I yell SCIENCE!!! or BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY like I was Gadget Hackwrench from Rescue Rangers or something.
From: [identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com
My forced-new shake tonight was good. Skim milk, two scoops of plain, unflavored whey powder, then a little vanilla extract and a packet of fake sugar. I think it would be better with one of the flavored whey packets from that company, but I didn't want to complicate it since I don't know what I'm allergic to. (Oh, and I need to add some ice next time, too.) The only thing lacking is the NEON COLORS.
