Down a toenail YET AGAIN

Know what's worse than having your toenail removed? Having had it removed so many times you've lost count of how many time it's been removed. I think this is the fourth time, but maybe it's the fifth.

I swear, it hurts more every time. (Or possibly I just forget how much it hurt the last times.)

Finally we're going to deal with it once and for all: In a month, once the infection is cleared up for sure, I'm going to go in for minor/outpatient surgery to get the nailbed killed. Hopefully it will stop growing back after that, so will no longer be able to cause problems.

Sure does hurt right now. Only drugs I get afterwards is over the counter stuff. It's throbbing and hurting pretty bad.

Blah.

Nope, I have a special "boot" I have to wear. It's kind of like a big flipflop and I clunk around all over the place.

What's causing it?

Once the toe nail gives you a problem, it'll keep growing in the same way. So first the doctor cuts off the side to narrow it, hoping it will grow back right. That failing, they take off the whole nail to let it grow back, hopefully right... and that failing (the point I'm at now), they kill the whole nail so hopefully it won't grow back, though that's not 100% certain.

Agreed! The pain is a lot less today, but yesterday was pretty awful.

If your stomach can handle it, naproxen is the most potent OTC NSAID. Two tabs every twelve hours. I recommend taking it with Zantac or famotidine. You can take Tylenol at the same time... 1000 mg every 6 hours.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind for next time. Luckily today it's fine without taking anything at all. (I guess that's why they give you nothing for it, because the pain is over so quickly.)
