Sergeant at Arms by Crystal Dawn
Rating: Hated (Hated-Disliked-Okay-Liked-Loved)

Quiz time! You're a were-dragon on a planet of were-dragons. For lord knows what reason, every child born to your race is born male. So to get females, you take your spaceship over to the next planet over and trade gold for women. That planet knows you and likes your gold, so they're fine trading women to be your mates. One day an asteroid hits the Planet of Women and all the women have to flee the planet.

1) How, if you have space travel not just to this planet but to anywhere in the universe, did you miss that this asteroid was headed to the Planet of Women?

2) When the women all decide to flee their dying planet, why did you not invite them all to yours? Or at least track them where they went to? Noooo, you let them scatter to the winds and thus your race is dying unless you find Earth women to mate with.

3) How the hell, when nothing but males are born, did your species survive until you developed space flight?

4) Why is this book called Sergeant at Arms when there is no military or ranks involved?

I know it will come as no surprise, but the writing was just so so bad. The main character's name was Davinia. The story took place on Earth in Dracon City. In a book about dragons...

"Those guys were so hot that Davy thought she might need a fan placed where it would blow on her."

While playing the slots, she won:
"It had just hit its jackpot of a hundred thousand plus dollars!"

"Her waitress came and distracted her and she ordered a sex on the beach which had all the men staring her way and a mixed appetizer platter."

The book was free, and still not worth the price. I gave up at the 50% point, which was a lot further than I should have read.

Nope. No words for what that is...

I think 'bad' is a fitting word. :D

Oh, wow, that sounds quite terrible!

3) How the hell, when nothing but males are born, did your species survive until you developed space flight?

This is a really good question! (Now I kind of want to read an actually well-thought-out story where that is the case, and they reproduce with the aid of some interesting symbiosis or something...)

You have my imagination working now. Since they're were-dragons, I'd go the route of them breeding in their dragon form with some native giant lizard animal. So the advancement to being able to reach alien women means they could start breeding in their human forms.

Ooh, I like that idea!

Unfortunately this seemed to be more of a romance book, so hot were-dragons banging lizards likely wouldn't fly with the author's audience. Would still be a better book though. :P

I mean you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but...

Luckily, since on my Kindle I see the cover in a one inch tall black and white image, I was spared seeing it until I made this post...

Hahahahaha, this sounds hilarious (in the sense that bad stuff can be hilarious, I'd never actually go for something like this to enjoy it...).

And now, for whatever reason, I want to watch Star Trek. So I think that'll be my background noise of choice for the day ;)

Yeah, it semi-went around the bend to being amusing, thus I was able to make it to the halfway point.

Is most of the planet gay? What is the population of the planet? Somewhat Earth like? A few billion guys? How many women do they import? Were all the women they imported essentially breeding slaves? Wouldn't a better idea have been to import some men as well, to have a self sustaining stock of women?

What...is the point of being a were-dragon? Like what is the evolutionary advantage of such? On a planet where everybody is like you, who cares?

How can the breed with aliens?

How can going to Earth possibly solve their problem? They send a few hundred males there on a ship and they have to slowly romance women enough to bring them back? This book is nothing but evolutionary bottlenecks, their species must constantly be on the verge of dying out.

You should email all those questions to the author, I'd love to see the response you get!
