Seems like every year I recommend this person's LJ, but it's worth repeated recommendations! antarctic_sue spend a good part of each year in the Antarctic, and posts daily pictures from there.

While I know it's not a realistic dream at all, I'd love to live in the Arctic/Antarctic, so through her pictures I get to experience a little taste of life there.

Reminds me of a story from a friend of mine --

My friend was in the Navy. After her first posting, she was given a choice of next posts. She could chose some really nice places (Hawaii, etc) and have little actual chance of being posted there, and end up wherever she was needed instead. She also had the choice of some unpopular posts, including Alaska, Antarctica, etc. If you chose one of the unpopular ones, at your next posting you would be guaranteed wherever you wanted.

She knew a guy who had chosen Antarctica. When it came time to choose a new post, he chose Antarctica again. This threw up alarm bells within his chain of command. Who the hell would take that post, and given the choice of anywhere in the world, would choose the icy hellhole again? He was sent to a psychiatrist repeatedly.

Eventually, he admitted: He had made a buddy. A pet penguin. He would go camping with it.

The Navy posted him in Hawaii for life.

Aw, that's too bad for him. Maybe there's something wrong with me, but how is that a bad reason for wanting to stay there?

To you and me? Perfectly fine reason! To the military? They look for different things, and I really don't know what those are (there's a reason I turned down offers to join).

Thanks for the recommend! I've followed her and am really liking the photography. I'm fascinated by the Arctic and Antarctic. I want to visit both someday; I'd even brave going on a cruise ship to do so!
