I don't think I've ever recced a TV series based on one single episode before, but wow. Someone elsewhere on LJ described Black Mirror as an updated version of Twilight Zone. Wiki describes it as "speculative fiction with dark and sometimes satirical themes which examine modern society, particularly with regard to the unanticipated consequences of new technologies".

In this first episode, a British princess is kidnapped, and the captor has an odd and disturbing demand...

The demand is for the Prime Minister to have sex with a pig, and that the act be broadcast live on every TV channel. /end spoiler

The hour follows all the happenings around that, how much the media impacts things, how public opinion changes, etc. It's fascinating in a sick, dark, disturbing way. I can't stop thinking about it.

The one downside to this series is that, even though it has two seasons, it has only a total of seven episodes. Each season has three eps, plus there's a Christmas special (I can only imagine what that might be like...).

It's currently available on Netflix.

Edit: Episode 2 is amazing too, in a totally different way. So messed up and disturbing and just amazing. I love this series!

I generally can't be arsed to watch tv shows, but I've always enjoyed The Twilight Zone, so I had to watch the first episode right away. It was great! Now off to watch the second....dammit, I already have a list of TV shows to watch (some written down like years ago lulz)...but at least this one is short XD

Luckily/unfortunately this series won't take too long to get through. I'm trying not to rush, since it will be over too soon!

I can't find it on Netflix, and this sounds exactly like the kind of thing I like. I searched on "Dark Mirror" and got zip for hits (well, there were the usual ones with "dark" or "mirror," but nothing with both words.).

Apparently I posted this too late last night. It's Black Mirror, not Dark. Sorry!

Edit: Wait, nope, I had it right in my post. Whew! Try Black Mirror, not Dark. :)

I remember when it came out here in the UK and it was very well received. Hilariously, David Cameron (the prime minister) was outed recently as having had, er, relations with a pig's head in his younger days. I guess you can imagine what happened next https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piggate

I'm not sure what part of that story disturbs/amuses me the most...

Ack, that first episode of Black Mirror still sort of haunts me. So uncomfortable and disturbing!

I loved Charlie Brooker's humour in his Screenwip and Newswipe series, but this fictional series of his fell sort of flat for me. I thought the first episode was disturbing, but interesting, but then I felt the next couple of episodes failed to live up to the standard set by the first.

I haven't seen anything else by Charlie Brooke yet, but I really want to!

Wasn't the first ep so freaky? For me, later eps freaked me out more and overwrote the first one, which is both good and bad...

Yeeeeeah, it stayed with me for a long, long, long time.

I assume you have read up on PigGate? 8D When art imitates life without even knowing it, etc. etc. etc..... :D

I did! Sometimes life should not imitate art. :P

That show is AMAZING!!! I love the idea that it shows us what kind of technological hellhole we're digging ourselves into, being obsessed with tech. There was only one episode I was really bored with (s1e3), and all the rest were amazing.

Agreed! I loved the tech aspect of it!

Same on S01E03. I understood the point they were making, but I was bored, too.
