Thanks to a link from [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo, I spent much of today reading the wonderful Transfigurations by [livejournal.com profile] resonant8. As usually happens after I read a great and long fic, I just sit and boggle at the entertainment and joy I get out of it for *free*. This writing is worth money! It's better than many books I've read! It's easily a match of the HP books themselves.

I brought up the money idea to Fritos_Beggar, who pointed out the (now rather obvious) point that if they did make money off this, lawyers would come down hard on them. Rather stupid of me not to think about that, especially since the MUSH I run is based on something very much not owned by me and I used to be able to all but feel the lawyers peering over my shoulder.

So, though I doubt there are many HP fanfic folks who read only my LJ and not [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo's, I'll plug it here anyway:

I've read nearly no "after the war" fics. I think my reason for avoiding them is that there's so much unknown between now and then that it'd be harder for the stories to stay IC. However, Transfigurations totally worked. All the post-war troubles and changes, death and growth, and returning to a school where bad things were still happening, all worked smoothly.

Transfigurations was also my very first time reading Draco/Harry. It was set far enough in the future that the pairing worked, though I didn't fall in love with it as I did (*blush*) Snape/Harry. There was an odd thing in this story, something I don't believe I've seen in another: You could have taken out all of the sex/relationship between Harry and Draco, and the story would have still been as good. Don't get me wrong, the sex scenes were nice (and again, they weren't kids in the story, both were adults), but the sex was somehow... extra. Not necessary. Perhaps because I'm not really fond of Draco/Harry, I think I would have liked to have read a version of the story without them in it, though it's really hard to decide for sure.

Please don't get me wrong, even with that pondering about with/without sex, this story was very, very worth reading. My only real complaint was that I wasn't able to stop reading, and so didn't do anything else at all tonight that I meant to do. 8-9 hours of straight reading, with only a short halt for dinner and some other little things here and there.

Though far, far from a main character, I loved Transfigurations' Snape. *sigh* Snarky, smart, but at the end showing a human side as well. I really liked Draco's interactions with him a whole heck of a lot.

Humor in fics, especially in stories whose main purpose isn't to be funny, is such a treat. Transfigurations had a number of enjoyable giggles, especially in the first half. (I don't want to give them away by posting them here.)

So, to wrap up this longer-than-expected post so I can get to bed, you should really read Transfigurations. Feeling_Better, you should make time to read this (I know you have a list already, heh heh). [livejournal.com profile] evilgrayson, you still need to read If You Are Prepared, so you can't read this until after that. :) (I feel like a teacher giving out homework. Heh.) I really need to hunt down new LJ friends who will read fics, that or convert current friends to fic-readers. ;)
