thistlechaserFor those who don't know, I run a MUSH (an online RPG). I've been the head honcho for four years now (which is two to four times the normal time that people run games before burning out). I put more time and effort into it than my full-time job, and I can honestly say it's been the one thing in my life that I've put the most time and effort into (college degree included and easily beaten).
Muchly because of our theme, we have a hard time getting players. People quite fairly and understandably expect that a Pokemon MUSH will be full of a bunch of kids who couldn't type their way out of their mommy's basement. This is not the case. Our selling point is that we offered the most mature and skilled RP around, regardless of theme. You have to be able to type near-perfectly and write a darned long and high quality application to get onto our game.
So for many years, this is the only quality I've been dealing with. For as long as I've been running things, I've never gone to play on another MU*. Now, since I love Harry Potter so much, I decided to try out one of the many MU*s out there. When I saw one with "elitist typing" in their ad, I figured that had to be the one for me. "If you do not type well, you will not get RP." Perfect!
So I went visiting yesterday, and then spent many hours writing up my application. This morning I was approved. Upon going IC, I was... surprised. Shocked. Dismayed. I had hardly realized that RP with quality as low as this existed! 10-20 OOC comments for every one (sucky) pose. Just a couple poses into the scene, and the scene breaks up into just OOC crap.
Well, can't hardly judge on one RP, right? So I left and found another scene. First pose: Someone else poses *my* character arriving. The next person to pose puts a ^_^ face into her pose. Does no one know how to RP? What's wrong with people?
So I left that scene and joined an ONS. At first things went a little better; while my (lazy) poses were many, many times longer than anyone else's, at least it was mostly posing and not OOC crap. Then, after three pose rounds, things fell apart and it shifted to only OOC comments. And this is an elite RP place?
Why is it that people not just accept, but want such crap? OOC comments in the middle of scenes, idiotic >.> faces in the middle of poses, power-posing and twinking... Why aren't there more places like my MUSH? How do people put up with such crappy games?
I logged off in the middle of the ONS, and I don't think I'll be going back there. Sigh. PokeMUSH can't be unique, there has to be other high quality places out there, but where? If I can't find one, I'll just remain within the protective arms of my game. I may never RP anymore, but at least there are no sucky people there.
