This is another of those items with no English on it, so I have no clue what to call it. Lack of a name notwithstanding, there's one thing I do know about this treat: There's a whole lot of milk in it! Two and a half milkjugs! That's a lot of milk.

But milk is apparently not the only good thing that comes with these cookies! There's also scientific fact! Did you know that Japanese boys need only .3mg of beans, but Japanese girls need .8? And Japanese boys need only .3mg of, um, lettuce but Japanese girls need 1.0mg? Luckily for all us girls, one serving of these cookies apparently gives you a day's supply of milk! Mmm, calcium.

So as I'm editing the photos, I'm thinking that in all seriousness I should finish these cookies. No matter how they taste, calcium is important! Don't want to fall down and break a hip, after all. So here's hoping these things taste good!

There are two foil packages inside the box. Unlike some of the previous candies and cookies, this is pretty plain foil, and it's totally lacking in cute animals. There's "Meiji" written in English, as well as writing in two(?) other languages.

Opening the package and pouring some out. I can easily believe they have a lot of milk in them, they smell milky. Other than milk itself, I don't think I've ever encountered a food that smells just like a glass of cold, rich milk. Ironically, they look much like cereal. (And as further evidence of their milky-goodness, my cat is going crazy, begging for one.)

Hmmm...

Would it be so wrong to let her try it before me? Maybe I'll just let her sniff it and see if she really wants one-- OW! Well now. It seems she not just wanted one of the milky cookies, she wanted human flesh as well. (Ow, ow.) I let her have the one she ripped my thumb off to get, and I gave her one more after. She's loving them!

She sniffs them.
Smells good! Bite!
Mmm, human flesh!
(Sorry for the blurriness on some of those. She kept moving.)

My turn! I can't be known as the woman less brave than her cat, after all! (And besides, she's not very verbose in her review of them. She's just licking her muzzle and eyeing me, looking like she wants more.)

My worry with trying these is that when I hold one up to my nose and sniff it, it actually smells like /sour/ milk. Since these came from Japan, they really could have gone bad... (will cats drink sour milk?). Oh well, only one way to find out.

Blargargeck!

While I've never actually eaten a spoonful of powdered milk, I now know what it would be like. I ate a half of one these little cookies. The texture is sort of nice (light, like dry, crunchy cereal), but once it crumbles up and hits the moisture in your mouth, the taste... expands. It's like your mouth is suddenly flooded with one-step-from-sour milk. I like milk, I have it on my cereal all the time, but this is ridiculously milky. (Enough so that a good taste becomes a pretty bad thing.)

So while they weren't the worst thing I ever tasted *cough*peels*cough*, they were pretty darned yucky. However, since apparently they can be used as cat treats, and they taught me that girls need more beans and lettuce than boys, they get a couple of bonus points. Final score: 3/10!
