If I told you that a movie about a pig who flew a plane and battled air pirates during World War 2 was good, would you believe me? I wouldn't have. However, Kurenai no Buta (Porco Rosso) was a great, sweet movie.

A fellow I know is BTing every Studio Ghibli or Studio Ghibli-related movie ever made, so I'm using the opportunity to grab the few I haven't seen yet. Kurenai no Buta is one of them. He didn't post the plot for it (probably for obvious reasons), but based on the makers of it, I grabbed it.

When I played it, the first thing on the screen was this text:

"This motion picture is set over the Mediterranean Sea in an age when seaplanes ruled the waves. It tells the story of a valiant pig, who fought against flying pirates for his pride, his lover, and for his fortune. The name of the hero of our story is Crimson Pig."

That was almost enough to make me stop it and delete it right there, but the art was amazingly beautiful and the music was wonderful, so I stuck with it. It's a good thing I did, because it turned out to be a great, exciting story.

The only other movie that's given me the feeling of flying was Kiki's Delivery Service (unsurprisingly made by the same folks). I watched a couple scenes over again, but I can't figure out how they do it, but somehow watching it really makes you feel what it's like to be up there.

It helped the movie that the pig wasn't a true, four-legged pig, and while the plot never explained why he was a pig (other than a one-sentence mention that it was a "spell" that turned him into it), that's okay. In the end, it wasn't important why he was half-pig.

The movie was set in Italy, and the people looked oddly non-anime-ish. I could be totally wrong, but I wonder if the Japanese was spoken with an Italian accent? It sounded different than usual...

The name of the maker of the plane's engine made me snicker lots.

So if you have a chance to grab Kurenai no Buta/Porco Rosso, don't pass it by just because it sounds silly. You'd be doing yourself a disservice if you do.
