Finally done with The Book (HP)
Jul. 23rd, 2007 08:59 pm759 pages. Too fricking long by half. Spoilers for the whole book behind the cut.
So glad to be done with the book. It was way way way too long, and by the end her writing style was getting on my nerves. I hope to never, ever see cap lock dialogue ever again, and way way too many people 'roared' when talking. Usually with cap locks.
Very rarely did I get into the story at all. I'd read a page, glance at the time, read a page, count how many pages were left, read a page, check a website... As I said on HBP, there are HP fanfics out there written so much better than the book (and I can't wait to read some tomorrow!).
I didn't buy most of the relationships at all. Harry/Ginny had me rolling my eyes every time. Ron/Hermione I didn't buy as more than a good friendship. The kisses were amazingly badly written. I could name countless fanfic kisses that had me toe-curling, but those in the book had me rolling my eyes.
The Ministry chapter was one of the two lowest points of the book for me. 'Heavy handed' is a major understatement. The only thing worse than that chapter was the epilogue. Hated the relationships, and all the childrens' names made me want to gag. If she had really killed Harry and left off the epilogue, I would have been happier.
Why were Patronuses used so heavily for communication in this book but not the earlier ones?
There were a few things I liked. The radio show. The fact/reasoning why Harry had to die (why, oh why, didn't she really kill him? THAT would have been a meaningful death!). I liked the goblins a whole lot. Aberforth and the whole family (and his Patronus is a goat! *dies*). Ravenclaws having a question instead of a password rocks my world.
'Hogwartians' is the silliest word I ever heard. I hope it never shows up in fanfics. :P
Way too many people/things died, most of them felt meaningless.
If the whole book had been like Snape's chapter, I would have liked it a whole lot more. (Instead it felt like we had 100+ pages of the trio moving about the countryside with no clue what to do.) I actually mostly bought the Snape/Lily thing.
Mostly the book was just too darned long. Cut it in half, seriously tighten up the story (what was the point of the wedding? How many pages were spent on that?), LOSE THE DAMNED CAP LOCKS (gah gah gah), and add 500% or so more Snape to the story and I would have liked it a lot more.
At least I'm done with it now. The last 100 or so pages felt like homework. 'I just have to get through this, 95 more to go! 90 more to go! Keep reading, then you can go do something else! 80 more to go!'. I wanted to finish it tonight so I could put it aside and be done with it.
Happily, I'm back to itching for HP fanfic! I didn't read the new Tea story yet, but I think I'll start the series from the beginning because I've forgotten most of it and it was such a good read.
While it's sad I didn't like the book all that much, the fact that there's such amazingly good HP fanfic out there more than makes up for it! :)
