Anyone know what the heck processed cheese sauce is? Does it come in a jar? Can? Thin air?

I'm intending to try to make soup this weekend, and it's one of the ingredients.

Ingredients

1 (15 ounce) can creamed corn
1 cup peeled and cubed potatoes
1 cup chopped carrots
1/2 onion, chopped
1 teaspoon celery seed
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 (14.5 ounce) cans vegetable broth
1 (16 ounce) jar processed cheese sauce

Directions
1 In a slow cooker, combine corn, potatoes, carrots, onion, celery seeds and pepper. Add broth and cover, cook on low 8 to 10 hours.
2 Stir in cheese and cook 30 to 60 minutes or until cheese is melted and blended with vegetables.

I have to buy an onion for this (as well as celery seed and, well, most everything else on the list), but it struck me that I never bought an onion before. I don't like onions and I don't cook much, so I guess I just never needed one before.

Also, I'm getting a bunch of jars/containers of spices. I think I need a spice rack or something.

Have to go shopping tomorrow after work (or over lunch). Can't put it off until Friday, since all the long-weekend people will be herding through the place. Well, they'll probably be there tomorrow we well, but more will be there Friday.

I'm really not too happy on my food-eating progress. Other than my lunchtime salad, the only thing I'm eating is the meatless stuff I was eating before I started all this. Cereal in the morning, cheese or pasta or bread for dinner. Sometimes I think about eating nothing but rice and fruit. I had a co worker years back who ate nothing but rice for 20 years. He was really skinny, but healthy and perky with energy. The strong-plus side to a rice-only diet is that I could stop thinking about darned food. Would you believe I'm still having bad dreams about eating meat by accident almost every other night? That's silly! Stop it, brain! Food is just food, I don't like how much time I have to put into thinking about it.

Processed cheese sauce is, effectively, Cheez Whiz. We don't know where it comes from or how it was created, although theories abound, including:

Falling from outer space.

Part of a minor dictator's chemical arsenal.

Cows taking revenge for thousands upon thousands of years of slavery and eventual mass slaughter.

Small children. (Don't read into that one too much.)

A vengeful god.

One thing's for certain, though: it tastes great on raw celery. *wistful sigh*

*slinking away*

*giggle* Thanks! I know just where to find some small children. I'll squeeze them until they produce this magical cheese substance!

As noted above, processed cheese food is Cheez Whiz. It is EVIL, EVIL I TELL YOU! ... except on the occasional Philly cheese steak. Which you won't be eating. So never mind!

Eating just rice for a long period of time is a bad bad idea unless you want to take a billion vitamins a day. Aside from that, you need more protein than just rice can provide. @_@ At least make it rice and beans.

*refuses to believe that anyone can be /healthy/ when eating just rice, maybe he was taking methamphetamines or something*

I concur with this wholeheartedly. You can't live eating only rice.

(Now, rice and beans, *maybe*. But, again, you would still need a million vitamins a day)

Cheeze Whiz is not evil!

I have a ton of "real" cheese, I'm considering substituting that for the fake stuff.

And yeah, I was surprised he was so healthy, too! He didn't even drink juice or soda or anything, just plain white rice and water!

Real cheese is probably going to mix differently from the (perhaps not entirely TEH EVAL) Whiz, so maybe you should look up some recipes for making a cheese sauce. (I think it's basically a roux with added milk and cheese and maybe some onions or something? I've never made one but watch a lot of Food Network!) Otherwise it might just melt into a big blob in your soup. Maybe the cheese should just be shredded and sprinkled on top or something? That's how I like tortilla soup.

And I really doubt this guy was healthy. Maybe his body somnambulated into restaurants at night or something, I can't imagine how he could not be severely malnourished from just rice and water. @_@;; It's /scary/. I mean, our body can't make certain amino acids and you need to eat more than just rice to get them (hence rice and beans, which provide all needed amino acids, being a staple meal around the world.)

Eek, I didn't even think of the cheese blob potential! Man, this cooking thing is harrrrrd! I guess I'll try the cheese whiz.

I'm not sure why, but this made me laugh out loud at work. Hee!

You can also make cheese sauce by substituting Velveeta (which is a processed Cheese Food) and milk. However, based on your recipe, I suspect you can substitute Velveeta alone with no fear.

BTW, you can skip the celery seed, and, given your reaction to regular celery, I would actually advise it. :) It's not actually the same plant, but they have the same taste.

You should try out the veggie soup I made earlier this month.

Ah, thanks for the warning! I'll leave it out.

Did you stick the recipe into your memories section? Otherwise I'll just poke through your main LJ for it.

Thanks!
