Hey, that screaming *isn't* in my head!
Sep. 14th, 2003 02:32 pmThere's an airbase (not an airport and I don't think just an airstrip) near my home. I think maybe NASA owns it, but I could be wrong. I drive by it now and then, but never went in and checked it out (I think probably it's military or government, so you can't, so I never tried). Anyway, for some odd reason sometimes fighter jets fly into and out of it, passing over my apartment to do so. There's nothing that settles my cat more than an ear-splitting screaming/screeching/howling coming from overhead as well as all around us. Excuse me while I try to get her out from under the bed...
Note to self: White chocolate goes very poorly with Diet Coke. I like normal chocolate fine with it, but white just doesn't work at all with it. Blech.
I love LJ. Sometimes it makes me feel like less of a freak. There's actually another vegetarian who doesn't really like vegetables. Okay, maybe I'm still a freak, but at least I'm not a unique one!
On that note, I forgot I bought some sugar snap beans (I think that was the name of them) to try. Left them in a plastic bag on the counter for a week. Oops.
I know the weekend isn't over yet, but here are the new (and sort of new) things I watched:
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Muchly on Furry_Butt's recommendation. I watched 5 of the 18 eps I have downloaded. While I didn't hate it, I didn't like it too much either. My biggest issue with it is that the scientists invented these massive (hundreds of feet tall) robots to protect the earth from aliens/monsters/whatever those things are, but these robots have to be plugged in. That's right, they have extension cords. Yeah, okay...
Mulan - I forgot how much I loved this movie! In my top three Disney movies, for sure. Loved the 'I'll Make a Man Out of You' song. Made some screen shots (of half-naked muscleman, mmm), but they didn't come out well so I'm not going to post them. Want to watch movie again soon. Very soon.
Blind Date's Freaks and Weirdos - The second of the three releases from Blind Date that you had to pay to see. Made me even more scared of the other people out there in the world.
Juuni Kokki (Shadow of the Moon, Sea of the Shadow) - A couple more eps of this. Easily my favorite anime (not counting movies like Spirited Away and such). The music is beautiful, the voices (in Japanese) are great, and I love the story.
YuuGiOu - Yu Gi Oh in Japanese, no subbing or dubbing or anything. Even though I couldn't understand more than a word or two, it was way cool. As ever, our version of it looks totally mangled. Sucks to be us.
Don't want the weekend to be over...

2.) "Cheese" made of pimento and made in my roommate's blender, which was from ever on then a disturbing pink.
3.) Bread and corn chips.
Urgh.

Date: 2003-09-14 09:56 pm (UTC)There's more going on here than meets the eye. The first few episodes seem like a pretty standard Giant Robot show with above average characterizations.
Then, you get into deeper mysteries. It's safe to say that both the Angels and the Evas are not exactly what they appear to be. I think you're just about to the point where the hints of something deeper start to appear.
But, fair warning, it sucks you into the mystery, and then fails to fully resolve it. There's a space for a last episode to explain everything, but someone's essay on 18th century metaphysics took its place. Fans were so upset by this, that they made not one but _two_ movies as alternate endings, and neither one was satisfying.
On the other hand, it's good enough up to the point of Left Field Weirdness that people cared, and still care about it.
So, if you're the type to enjoy a really cool story even if it doesn't have a good resolution, stick with it. However, if you're the kind that would be driven crazy about big questions never answered, just stop now and be happier for it.
Hope this helps! And if nothing else, I think the series has a great opening theme song.

I don't mind the lack of a good resolution, it's really that whole needs-to-be-plugged-in thing that made me balk. :)

Date: 2003-09-14 11:25 pm (UTC)My other main problem with the show isn't really its fault, but is big enough to really rile me. After NGE came out, it seemed that a good half of the anime series that came out decided to imitate it. Which meant that the next few years were stuffed with series loaded with awkward symbolism and heavy-handed sophistry..."Gee, why bother demonstrating the philosophy behind the series subtly in execution when we can beat the audience over the head with it?"
Of course, I don't hold liking the show against anyone...it's just not my cup of tea.

Date: 2003-09-15 07:01 am (UTC)Which would explain why Chia likes it :) , that and that she tells me there's a hot shower scene near the end.
Since I have it all downloaded anyway, I'll likely check the rest out as time allows. Thanks for the info though!

White chocolate isn't real chocolate; it's basically chocolate fat.

Wow that sounds really, really gross. Would that explain why it was softer than I expected a solid block of chocolate to be?

Date: 2003-09-15 03:31 pm (UTC)White chocolate really isn't chocolate at all; it's cocoa butter or cacao liquer mixed with...something, don't remember what. It's what's left over after the chocolate solids (which go on to make the brown chocolates we know and love) are removed from the cacao slurry as part of the chocolate making process.
