Odwalla bars!
Sep. 18th, 2003 03:58 pmI was wrong in my last post. One bar has 16g of protein, which is a darned lot!
Taste-wise it's... okay. It smells better than it tastes, which is odd. Smells almost like something you'd feed a horse, mixed with grape juice. Sort of oaty-grapey.
It tastes more like figs, which is odd because it has no fig in it. And it's dense as hell. Imagine a whole lot of Fig Newtons, like tons and tons and tons of them. Now imagine them being compressed down to a bar the size of a playing card. Mix in some uncooked oat meal, and you have this thing.
Luckily they're pretty darned filling, and you can only eat them in tiny little bites. Very dense and pretty dry.

Date: 2003-09-18 05:16 pm (UTC)For bars, I like Luna bars. They are very tasty and also full of goodies like vitamins and stuff. Have also started taking those One-A-Day vitamins for women, and that seems to be going well.
Obviously, I'm like you and I don't get a lot of this stuff from...actual food. *g*

Date: 2003-09-18 06:16 pm (UTC)If you do venture into Trader Joe's again, you might consider picking up some of their roasted, salted almonds. (They're in bags with all the other nuts and dried fruit, usually facing the produce section.) Tastier and cheaper than you'll find anywhere else. (And if you like dried fruit, I highly recommend their "slab" apricots, too.)

Date: 2003-09-18 06:24 pm (UTC)Have you tried hummus yet? Dolmas? A lot of Mediteranean food is vegetarian and very good. Babaganoush (no clue as to true spelling) is good. Both the hummus and the babaganoush should be scooped up with pita bread, preferably warm pita bread.
Trader Joes has a lot of very good veggie food. Look for Amy's and Cedar Lane in the frozen section for instant meals. I went through a veggie period and found their stuff the best. None of the ready-made veggie burgers were worth a thing. A local place up here does a kick-butt veggie burger. With blue cheese, it's a real treat.

Oh, and it's incredibly boring but cottage cheese is usually good for a protein/calcium source. I vastly prefer ricotta, but even the part skim has a lot more fat than cottage cheese.
And I highly recommend you get some hummus and warm pita before November. *Mmmmmm*
