Sorry for mangling the quote like that.

Anyway, the HP100 challenge this week is a real bitch. In 100 words:

What do wizards know about muggles? We have people like Arthur Weasley, who seems to be a pureblood exception in the fact that he actually cares what electric plugs are. And yet, there are Muggle-borns who obviously know a lot about Muggle culture, considering they come from it. Hogsmeade is the only all-wizarding village, so it's obvious that most wizards live in some sort of proximity to the likes of us, yet they don't seem to know a whole lot about us.

It's rather curious. So, this week's challenge centres around Muggle-wizard relations.

How in the world do you write 100 words about that? And IMO, it's not even very interesting... But an hour ago (bedtime), I was thinking out loud at Freely_Bleeding, bouncing ideas off her. (She's a great fact-checker for me, I forget so much!) An idea formed, and though it might not exactly fit what the challenge is looking for, it does sort of vaguely work. I used "Muggle-wizard relations" in a more generic, "global" sense.

It was also one of my hardest to write (perhaps because I'm usually asleep by now). I read it out loud to myself a few dozen times, trying to get the wording and flow right.

Title: Night Riders
House: Slytherin
Word count: 100
Characters: Random Death Eaters, random Muggles
Note: This takes place during some time period when the DEs were riding high (no pun intended). See note on the title after the story.

Of all the worries Cass had had about sneaking out to go to the party in the woods, she had never even come close to imagining anything like this.

Something big, black crashes in through the night. A horse, its rider yelling at them as the animal tramples through the fire, scattering the burning wood.

More riders swarm in. Cass can pick her best friend's scream out from among the others. She flees into the dark, in a randomly picked direction.

Yells. Flashes of colored light. Hooves behind her, and as she trips, upon her. Pain. The night flares green. Everything fades.

---------

'Night Riders' is a reference to the KKK. Seemed fitting in this case.

I can't wait to read it tomorrow when I'm awake, so I can see if it works or not. Hopefully it does.

And why is 'Muggle' capitalized, but 'witch/wizard' is not? Sheesh.

*shivers* Muggle/wizard relations for sure. What a contrast to Arthur's curious questions about Muggles!

Oooh, that drabble gave me a shiver. Such vivid descriptions -- very well done.

Wow. Interesting take on the topic. *g*

I read a post somewhere about JKR's weird capitals usage... *rummages*

Here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/rane_ab/1267.html) is a list of capitalised words, and words commontly capitalised that shouldn't be.

And here (http://www.livejournal.com/community/punctuators/7021.html) is an essay on said subject.

Seemed vaguely Stephen King-ish. Ok, we're just sneaking out into the woods to do a little drinking, what could possibly go wrong. As soon as drinking in the woods is mentioned, we know we're in trouble. I liked it, but you're right, what a rotten prompt for something only supposed to be 100 words. The prompt itself is that long.

Thank you! I couldn't ask for better than it being sort of Stephen King-ish! :)
