Jesus Christ Superstar: Then and now
Oct. 11th, 2003 08:51 amI've been a fan of Jesus Christ Superstar for a while, but the only version of it that I had seen was the PBS/British/2001 one (and what a wonderful version that is!). So when I saw a copy available for downloading, even though I own the DVD, I pounced on it. An hour or two later, I was watching it.
Le sigh. It's actually the older version: the one from the 70s. But hey, that's cool. I wanted to see more takes on the story. Almost from the get-go, I fell in love with it for other reasons. Such a look into the past! Bell bottoms! White men with afros! Funky jewelry! Snickeringly funny dancing! And Nice glasses there, dude.
I wonder about something though. In this older version, their Judas is black. I wonder if that caused any complaints about racism. While the JCS version of Judas is a lot more human and understandable than the Bible version, he *does* still betray his good friend. I wonder if the various rights groups got upset them making the betrayer black? Any of you folks out there know? (I was alive in the 70s, but not of an age to be viewing much besides cartoons.)
The other sad thing is that the 70s Judas wasn't cute. Though some people had issues that he was a balding man, the 2001 Judas was pretty hot in my opinion. Lots of yummy lusting from his side of the Judas-Jesus friendship.
-----------
I now have all the eps of Get Backers. Love, love, love it! 10 watched, 39 more to go. If you have a chance to watch the series, I'd highly suggest doing so.
Odd thing about it:
This is a boy.
I never would have guessed he wasn't a girl.
