2:30 AM. I was sound asleep. Heard a crash and woke up with a start. Jumped out of bed to a really odd sound -- water running? In my kitchen?

The light in there didn't work, so I had to move a lamp so I could see.

The kitchen ceiling light was on the floor. Water was flooding out of my ceiling. The kitchen floor (lower than the rest of the floors) had a half-inch or so of standing water.

Called the apartment emergency line. A full hour later, someone arrived.

Now, 12 hours later, I've had three different groups of people inspecting my apartment.

"Major water damage"

I'm going to have to move out of my apartment for 1-2 weeks, starting as early as tomorrow. Where am I going? I have no idea.

Why did this happen? Some complete and utter idiot turned his faucet on full force and then left his apartment for the night. Why would anyone do that?

I wish the apartment complex would make him pay for all of the repairs. I wish he would have to pay for my arrangements and everyone else who has to move because of this.

I'm so exhausted. I've had 4-5 hours of sleep per night for the last week, and last night I was up at 2:30. There are currently massive fans and a dehumidifier almost as big as me set up in my kitchen, they're so loud I can barely think.

It's probably a good thing I don't know which neighbor it was...

Your apartment's insurance company should pay, shouldn't they? I remember that being a feature in the landlord policies we were looking at.

Turns out the insurance is going to pay, yeah, but it's going to be the insurance of the guy who left the water on.

As long as it's not you, who did nothing wrong and has to endure being horrifically inconvenienced because your neighbor is a moron.

The apartment complex should pay for a hotel for you! This is ridiculous on so many levels, but you should not foot the bill for any of this! Just ridiculous! :(

Yeah, they are. It's still going to be a pain in the butt (I can't really bring my desktop computer with me, going to try using an old laptop), and I suppose I'll be eating out for three days, but... it could be worse.

Did you contact your renter's insurance company? maybe they can help you out in some way? Just seems so wrong for you to have to pay for all of this upfront when none of it was your fault in any way shape or form.

Thankfully the apartment complex is paying for the hotel room, though I suppose I have to cover eating out for three days...

Oh man, how sucky. Surely they would have to make the neighbour pay something? Who does that? I hope nothing of yours was damaged.

Thankfully almost nothing of mine got ruined. A rug and a pair of old sneakers.

Word is, the guy's insurance is going to have to pay for all the repairs. I wish they'd make the guy himself pay for them...

Oh man, that sucks! :( Hope you can find something! I totally second the complex getting you a hotel room though.

Thanks. Luckily they're going to pay for me going to a pet-friendly hotel. I'm not looking forward to it at all, but it could be a lot worse.

You certainly shouldn't have to pay for all that!

Nope, the guy who left the water running has to (or rather, his insurance -- I wish it was him personally!).

If you have any important papers or books that got wet, put them in the freezer as soon as possible!

This will stop mould from growing, and gives you time to dry them out one-by-one.

Oh wow, I never heard of that trick before. Smart! Luckily it's mostly a rug and some shoes -- I got off easy, when it comes to that part of it.

If you throw anything out, take a picture first. Even if the landlord says otherwise, you should still be able to get compensated.
