Krispy Kream donuts

A little backstory on the donuts: We hired a new fellow here on October 25th or so. Nice guy from Germany. Really big (tall and a little heavy). Wore a tie all the time.

A tie? In California? Yep. And so people kept telling him not to, ties just don't fit in here, even if you're a manager (which he is). So finally he gave in, and on Halloween wore... womens' panties, stockings, and nothing else.

Gah!

It was really funny, but very very very very disturbing. He's like six and a half feet tall, with a belly and hairy legs. I saw way, way too much of him.

So what's this got to do with donuts? He said if two of the other managers would wear ties for the rest of the month, he'd bring Krispy Kream donuts in for all of December. I'm not really sure what happened, since today is only the 10th, but he brought a ton of donuts in this morning.

I had never had a Krispy Kream donut before, so I went and got one. They're stone-cold, so I was afraid they wouldn't be good (people have said that), but mmmmmm. The one I had was just amazing. Best thing I've had in my mouth in ages. I thought it would be a Boston Cream one, but in the middle was this really sweet whipped cream instead of the pudding that Boston Creams usually have. I really want another one, but I'm resisting.

Mmm, so good, so good.

In other news, I think my apartment is cleaner than it has ever been. I still have a little work left to do, but all the big stuff is done. (It's good that my mother comes out every year or so, as that's the only time my place gets such an intense cleaning.)

No major happenings from the weekend, other than the cleaning. I'm trying to get my feet under me on the FA mod stuff. It's a really odd situation, working for a place that I don't really feel a member of, that I don't feel part of the community for... but the area I oversee is nice and has few problems, so it's cool.

Six more eps of Hellsing finished downloading overnight. I wanted nothing more than to stay home from work today so I could watch. Got lots of Dear Boys ahead of me, too. Waiting for the last two eps of Get Backers to be translated so I can complete that series.

And... a slight confession. I'm really new to this whole anime thing, and before I was into it I tended to get really annoyed by the real big fans of it, especially when they used Japanese words in their English conversations... but I sort of understand it now. I spent most of the weekend hearing nothing but Japanese as I read English subtitles, and some words are now stuck in my head as Japanese. Odd words, too. Like "na-nee" (don't know how to spell it) for 'what'. And typical "fan words" like "gomen" or "gomen nasai" for sorry/very sorry. I'm afraid one might pop out in normal conversation when I don't mean it to...

Wow, this became a long post.

Ewww! That'd be more than I'd want to see of a big, hairy-legged guy too. (Well, a big, hairy-legged guy who isn't my husband, anyway!) I had a boss once who always wore a suit and tie, even on "dress-down" days, and when he asked me to make a flyer inviting people to a waterskiing weekend he was hosting, I lampooned him by drawing him barefoot-skiing, fully dressed in suit and flapping-in-the-breeze tie.

Krispy Kremes are so yummy. If you get the chance, go see them being made! It's so cute the way they tumble from their oil bath onto the drying conveyer belt, then under the waterfall of frosting. And they always give you a freshly made hot one when you get done watching, too.

And thank goodness for out-of-town guests, huh? I count on them for motivation to get things clean around the house. My mom's fairly local, so I don't go out of my way for her, but when cakeinoz (whom I'd never met in person) was due to come stay for a few days, I gave this place a cleaning the likes of which it probably hadn't gotten since my clean-freak grandmother was alive. (And hasn't gotten since!)

Just for the record: nani

One thing I really like about Japanese, is that it's truly phonetic, with regular spelling and pronunciation. Utterly unlike english. Once you know the basic elements, that part of it becomes rather easy. With one common exception, it's all a bunch of two-letter (to us) consonant/vowel combos, like na + ni for nani. ('n' can stand alone. Don't ask me why.)

This is also why, when they import english words, they throw in little random vowel sounds:
beer -> biru
Ice cream -> icu curimu

and so on.

Aye, like 'なに' is nani, 'ごめん'is gomen, and stuff like that. It's fun, as I've been taking Japanese and learning the hiragana and all. ^^ The hiragana/katakana stuff all translate into romaji, which is the 'english' letters for the things. :3

Also with 'nani', there's a lot of 'nan' stuff. Same thing, really, so if you hear it with anything, it means they're asking about something. ^^ Same with 'ka' at the end of sentences and such. It's their version of a question mark. :D

Though to be honest, I try not to mix my English and Japanese, even if I do like anime and all, unless I'm talking about a Japanese term (anime, bishounen, yaoi ^_~ etc). Tho mom says I have quirks like saying 'mou' when something is wrong. I don't catch it. ^^

Ah, that would be installing the language, or at least enabling it. I think you can get the downloadable for Windows off the site.. If not, try clicking Tools>Internet Options>Languages>Add and then find the Japanese one. ^_^

Beer is technically biiru. Just biru is building. Ice cream would be rendered in romaji as aisu kuriimu. Those extra syllables don't matter much in longer words (I guess you could even get away with just saying aisukuri to someone), but I still remember getting lectured by my old prof that biiru had to have the extra i sound and the dash thingie.

I'm amused a bit by all the uproar over Krispy Kreme countrywide now. I can remember being, oh, three or four, and begging my mom and dad to stop by the Krispy Kreme store to get some fresh-made donuts because the "HOT NOW" sign had just gone on as we passed. Been eating them all my life. And hearing people just now discover them... *grin* They're the donut of choice in my neck of the South. (Regional motto: "Can you deep-fry it up for me, Mabel?")

I grew up with Dunkin' Donuts, which is just an East Coast thing. (Northern only?) Out here in CA, we have no donut chains at all! Hardly any bakeries, either. Nothing like in the east. The supermarkets sell donuts, but they're really "eh" ones.

That's the creme-filled chocolate doughnut. Those rock. They also have the Bavarian Cream filled ones (like Boston Creams), but I don't like them.

Some weekend, we should get together to watch a movie and hang out again. Krispy Kreme is only a block or two from my house, and, as another commenter said, they are so totally much better when they're fresh off the conveyer.

Oh man, if you can have a fresh glazed Krispy Kreme, you can get something close to the experience of eating a hot Shipley's glazed. Far less greasy and with more doughnut and less sugar taste. I love the way Krispy Kremes just seem to melt away in my mouth, but the Shipley's not only taste way better, you can also get kolaches and actual decent custard-filled ones (not a fan of KK custards, when the doughnut itself gets cold it's all oily, but sticking it in the microwave results in custard the approximate appearance and texture of semen. Shipley's even taste good cold.)

Thus endeth my doughnut rant. Though if I'm really the Shipley's devotee I claim to have become since moving to Houston, I should be spelling them do-nuts.

My SO and I tend to use random Japanese words when being cute with each other, and I'm always embarrassed to catch myself saying anything Japanese-y in public. ^^;
