I'd like to biggie-size my post, please!
Dec. 4th, 2003 07:02 pmThere's something for everyone in this post, or I will send you $100!*
Three semi-related things:
------
I was reading a FAQ on Japanese honorifics (such a cool idea, I wish we used them here), and came across something interesting:
-chan is very intimate. Two close (usually young) friends may use the -chan suffix with each other. To indicate an even closer relationship, the -chan is dropped entirely and no suffix is used at all.
I wish I had known that sooner! "To indicate an even closer relationship, the -chan is dropped entirely and no suffix is used at all"! Unless I'm mis-remembering (and I don't believe I am), in the end of Dear Boys, after meeting with his "ex" (ex-teammate or ex-something), Aikawa stopped -chan'ing Fujiwara... I noticed it, but hadn't known the meaning of the change! Arg. What other subtle things am I missing out on? Whine, whine.
----
Also anime-related, but non-fans should be able to enjoy/twitch/snicker over this. A series I stumbled across called Eiken:
Not only does it have panty-shots, it has teddy bear panty shots! But that's not all, her hair blows in the wind, and so do her breasts. I think she needs to worry more about being smothered than about falling... I'll save you all from the naked pictures (sorry,
quasilemur).
Said of this series (not by me):
"It's like something horrible on alt.sex.stories.fetish came to life and got a budget and everything."
Person 1, "What is with the Japanese obsession with breasts larger than small children? That's just seriously fugly."
Person 2, "It's probably just a side effect of their other obsession with the actual small children."
Teehee.
-----
Lastly, before returning to Full Metal Alchemist tonight, I tried a new series: Weiss Kreuz Gluhen. It's an interesting story (though with an unrealistic detail or two, which I really shouldn't let bother me), but it's full of good-looking (and sometimes mostly naked) guys and subtext, so I'm happy. (Feeling_Boners: It's much like that Clamp style you like, pointy-chin'ed men. I tried to get screenshots for you, but kept getting distracted by, well, by the men!)
Oh, also for Feral_Bunnies: I'm downloading something called X-TV. I think it might be related to your X thing that you like.
...you know you're hooked on anime when you're annoyed that you have to stop watching it to watch the one single show you still watch on regular TV. For the first time since the series started years ago, I'm actually not looking forward to Survivor tonight.
ETA: The more I see of Full Metal Alchemist, the more I love it. Man, what an outstanding story!

*Or an email saying "I.O.U. $100", my choice!

Date: 2003-12-04 08:36 pm (UTC)Whatever happened to Trigun? *whines*
The X TV series is based on the X manga which is the basis for the X movie, which is eye candy but leaves out a lot of the manga's plot (plus had to make up an ending since I think the manga's stalled, and wasn't anywhere close to finished however many years ago the X movie was out)... I think the TV series has had a better fan reaction, in the US at least. I was silly enough to not buy more DVDs back when I could afford them, so I shan't see it for another few years, probably. *g*
I admire your willingness to download random episodes of things, especially considering the large percentage of fanservice-for-boys anime out there, especially in digisub land. One of my ex co-workers is really into a lot of shoujo and not-necessarily-shoujo-but-with-bishounen anime and manga, so I'll ask her for suggestions if you'll let me know what's your favourite of the stuff you've been watching lately (shall assume Getbackers and Dear Boys as two of them, yes?)
Whew, this is more typing about anime than I've done in a while.

Date: 2003-12-04 08:54 pm (UTC)Oh, huh. I heard people talk about "Weiß Kreuz", I thought they were just leaving off the last word of the title. It feels like a new series, but I could be off.
I gave up on Weiß Kreuz after one episode, but it's endearing to a lot of people for all its bad-plot-and-animation-quality
While far from the best thing I've ever seen, neither the plot nor the animation are too awful in Glühen... Maybe I'll have to avoid checking out the original series!
Whatever happened to Trigun? *whines*
I keep downloading and downloading it, I just haven't gotten to watch it again yet! Some guy puts a new CD (three to four eps) up every couple days, so at least I'll soon *own* the collection... then I'll just need time to watch them! Maybe this weekend, hopefully.
Thanks for the X info! I know nothing about it other than feline_bowler drools over it every time it's mentioned.

I think "ignorance is bliss" applies here! Until a week or so ago, I didn't even know what 'fanservice' meant! Now I have a better idea what sort of pond I'm diving head-first into.

Oh, thank you! Yes, those two plus DNAngels were my favorites. Hellsing, too!
Thanks!

So what you're saying is: I'm a good influence on you? ;)

Date: 2003-12-05 01:22 pm (UTC)But I think you've said before that you had trouble finding these on suprnova.org. I'm having the same problem finding all the DNAngel eps on Kazaa (which I really want to see after those pretty screen shots), so I'm trying the whole BitTorrent thing, but with no success yet as I have no idea how to work it. Someday though, I'll figure it all out, or give up trying.

Date: 2003-12-05 01:31 pm (UTC)Do you have a client for your BT? It makes it a lot easier. Are you on Windows? If so, maybe try the one I use?
http://bt.degreez.net/
Once you have it installed, all you should need to do is click on a BT link and it should do everything else for you. If you run into troubles, let me know!
