Free LJs: Different problem
Jan. 14th, 2004 08:29 amWhen I learned that LJ was removing the invite code system, I was rather upset. I worried about trolls making lots of LJ names just to troll with. Luckily the troll thing isn't a big issue, but something I hadn't has expected come up:
Crap LJs like
fandom_scruples. Sure, kids shouldn't be permitted to see NC-17 stuff, but should it not be the parent's job to keep them from seeing such things? Do we need someone naming themselves The Internet Police and telling people "Don't read these writers! They're oh so bad by my standards, so YOU shouldn't read them!"?
What the hell? I thought the whole fandom was just PMSing (with all that BNF-wars crap), but it's the ability to make limitless LJs which is at the bottom of this.
I just love how the creator of this LJ uses the pronoun "we" to imply more people are behind this movement than him or her.
I'm feeling the need to write smut and not only leave it un-password protected, but to use keywords which would draw kids in. Grrr.
(Slept better last night. Taking a sinus pill before bed = sleep, not taking one = no sleep. However, they raise blood pressure, so taking one could = heart exploding and splattering blood all over my nice white wall, which wouldn't be good.)

Date: 2004-01-14 09:24 am (UTC)I think the funniest part of that site is that it made me want to read the 'black listed" writers fics even more. It's like they say, no such thing as bad publicity.

I also wanted to say that I agree completely with your comments here...particularly the parental responsibility. Just posted my own rant about this, since the entire concept of

actually i have taken rudimentary steps to protect children from my own brand of evil (i honestly don't like the thought of seven year olds looking up Harry Potter and seeing what he's done with his Potions master).
but i'm not password protecting my site. i can't keep track of my inbox as it is... sheesh.

Date: 2004-01-14 11:32 am (UTC)It's such a sad thing. It's like the fandom suddenly exploded and all the friendliness has been pushed aside. I hope this trend ends, but so long as anyone can make a new LJ for any purpose they like, I don't see that happening.
and why don't i get to be on the black list? *pouts*
If it helps, you'll always be on the blacklist in my heart! ;)
