(Two topics made into one action-packed subject line!)

Peeps:

Don't laugh at me, but I never had one of those Easter marshmallow Peeps before. My mother was pretty anti-candy when I was growing up, and once I was old enough to buy my own stuff, I never saw the point of them. However, yesterday I was stuck in a store waiting for them to fill my prescription, so I wandered through the Easter section. There on the shelf they were, so bright yellow and perky looking!

"Hm," I hm'ed as I took in their cuteness. "I can microwave them and burn them and do the other funny stuff that people on the Internet do with them!" Pause, moment passes. "Hey, or maybe I could try eating one and see what they're like!"

So with box in hand, I trotted home. Not feeling much in the mood for dinner, I tried them instead. (Note: This was a really bad decision, as I had to do a pre-bloodwork fast starting after dinner. I should have eaten dinner.)

I was rather surprised at how "bad" they were. Sugar covered sugar! Wow! I didn't like the taste much or that they were covered with sugar, but they were so bright and happy looking! I had so much fun biting them in half that I ended up eating one of the three boxes in the pack. I still didn't like them at that point, so I threw the other two boxes out.

Hm, I feel so sacrilegious now. People seem to love those things! But personally I'd rather have my sugar calories in something yummy like chocolate, not marshmallows (mostly sugar, yes?) rolled in more sugar.

But it sure was fun biting those sunny little chicks into bits!

At least they're not terribly high in calories, for candy. 160 for one box, or about 5 (6? 7?) Peeps.

Chasing the gays away:

Tennessee, land of the free and bane of the gays, has backed away from their plans to chase gays out with shotguns. The adults, after hearing all the backlash, announced "Hey! We didn't mean we don't want gays here! Just same sex marriages! Honest dirty blanket-squatting mongrel thieve-- eh, honest injun!"

But of course the kids give away what they hear at home. Quote:

But 12-year-old Caitlin Kinney, attending the meeting with her mother, said she supported the commissioners' initial vote.

"I think they should go further, try to see if they can ban them," she said. "It's not a Christian thing."

Yes, because it's a "Christian thing" to spread hate. I hear you, little girl. We all do.

Don't you know Peeps last forever and ever until the end of time? You should place them around your house and car and keep them as pets!

*laughs* I can put the other two boxes on a shelf or something! They really are rather cute.

I don't like Peeps either. Nasty little bastards.

Marshmallows, if you believe it or not, are mostly eggwhites. And sugar, too, of course.

Ah! And here I thought I would be the only one who hated them!

I'd totally believe that. I hate how chewy it is and how it feels in your mouth.

Peeps are revolting. My mother's ex-bf used to have a godawful obsession with the little things. I don't really see what's so special about a bit of colored sugar wrapped in marshmallow.

I say Pocky and I say give it now! ^_^

I'm really amazed at the number of people who are posting that they don't like them. Yay us! I'm glad I'm not alone in my opinion of them. :)

I can't stand Peeps. They're the most disgusting candies that have ever been produced...

Huh! I can't believe I was so mistaken. I thought everyone liked them! Well, cool!

People love Peeps, sure. But not for eating, silly Thistle.

I have a friend who once kept an open pack of peeps on his dashboard for 2 years. Their gay colors faded in the sun, but they maintained their integrity...slowly fossilizing. At one point, he tossed one out the window while the car was moving...and it cracked the windshield of the car behind us.

Now that's an idea to try with them!

Nobody eats fresh peeps. They taste much better when they're slightly stale - gives them some texture.

I love peeps. I eat them about once every three years or so, which is why I love them. I don't think I could take them more frequently.

And hey, I've got an appropriate icon!

*snicker* Your icon is perfect, yeah!

Hm, maybe I'll open one of the other two packages and let it get stale before trying again...

The girls usually can't bear to eat their peeps, so they often use them in craft projects. You should see some of the nests they've built for various peeps.

[livejournal.com profile] isiscolo is right about the staleness factor. Al dente... so much better than soft!

*laughs* I bet they are! You should take some photos and post them!

And eeee! Icon! Very cute... and fitting!

Aah...the memories of peeps....

Ok, so the only time I've ever eaten one was after a friend and I toasted them over the stove. .^^ They weren't so cheerful looking anymore, all black and melty, but they tasted good! =D We were lamenting that we didn't have any chocolate or graham crackers to make s'mores with. .^-^

Hee! Good idea! I bet they'd be a lot more tasty that way.

For once, we are in agreement-- Marshmallow Peeps are nasty. For me, Cadbury Creme Eggs is where it's at. Mmmm, bought some yesterday.

Mmm, I love Cadbury Creme Eggs, but I can't eat more than a nibble of one at a time. They're too sweet for me -- but I love them in tiny doses!

The local candy store dips the peeps in a thin layer of chocolate on one side. Surprisingly good-- the cruncyness of the sugar combines with the smooth chocolate and gummy marshmallow.

I like plain old peeps a lot, but there is no way I could eat one in public, as the only way to eat them is to let the peep sit on your tongue and let it melt slowly.

Very stale peeps can be dropped whole into coffee, where they sizzle into nothingness.

Huh! I think I've learned more about Peeps because of this post than I have in the rest of my life! Chocolate sounds like it could be interesting, but I wish I drank coffee so I could try dropping one into it!

Thanks!
