I know some folks on my flist are members of Curves gym. A heads up for them, and for anyone else who is considering membership there:

There have been a number of news stories released in the past couple days (one of them) about the owner of the Curves chain: Gary Heavin. He "has given at least $5 million of his profits to some of the most militant anti-abortion groups in the country". And of that five million dollars:

"At least half of that money went to three Texas organizations to fund "pregnancy crisis centers" supported by Operation Save America -- the same organization that blamed the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on God's retribution for abortions."

This is where part of your membership dollars are going: Into a group that believes that 9/11 is god's punishment for abortions happening here. Do you really want to support someone like that? A cause like that? Insanity like that? There are other gym options available (even all-women gyms in some areas), and of course there are tons of exercise options other than going to the gym!

Think before you pay another month's membership.

Boy, a couple hours of sleep make a big difference! I got eight hours of sleep last night, and work isn't anywhere near as hellish as it was yesterday, even though my workload has doubled today. I feel nice and happy and good!

FFXI: Fishing is so so so good to make money at! I'm rich. :) I can fish a stack of moat carp in about an hour, and they (quickly) sell for 4,000. Between yesterday and today, I got another fishing level, too. Woo! Just from tricolor carps and gold carps!

I'm going to hop to Windy tonight to take the damned cooking test, then probably come straight back. Though the leveling up is slower, making the moat carp money counts for a lot. (I bought all the spells for my next level, and it didn't even put a dent into my account!)

I need to do more job leveling up sooner or later... Heh. 20! All I need to do is get to 20, then I can chocobo! I'll be able to get to various cities with a lot less chance of dying! (18/subjob will be great, and 25/Raise will be nice, but 20/chocobo is really what I'm itching for.) Also, there are some other jobs I want to try, beastmaster especially. I think you need to get to level 30 before you can open other jobs though? Either way, it's a long time off.

I'm up to ?skip=50 on my flist! I might actually get caught up today! Woo! I do love reading all of your posts, I'm just sorry that my comments aren't more timely. :)

Wow. I hadn't heard that about the Curves gym. My best friend's mom had been kicking around the idea of joining, but she'll run screaming in the opposite direction once she hears this. Thanks for the heads up. How utterly horrifying.

I'm glad it'll help someone! The more the word gets out, the better. People should be able to knowingly choose if they want to support something so insane as this...

This is beginning to turn into a bit of urban legend. Just in the sense of fairness, please check out this post for some perspective.

Thistle, you're about two weeks behind. :)

A talk radio show covered it today, and that was the first I've heard of it. If it's old news, take it up with them. :)

However, I'll have to disagree with you and [livejournal.com profile] lil_m_moses. So what if it's "his" money and not donated in the name of Curves? He owns Curves. That's where his money comes from. Your money goes to the company he owns, his money comes from it and goes into the pockets of people who think 9/11 was God's punishment for giving women control over their own bodies. This is nothing at all like an urban legend.

Eh, but at the same time you have to think of this: You buy products/services from hundreds, possibly thousands of companies every year. These companies have hundreds possibly thousands of employees that get their income from what the company sells. Do you honestly think there aren't, among those employees, people who support and fund the same ideas? No matter what, you're screwed unless you don't use any products/services whatsoever. It's just like that whole 'Saddam Hussein invested in American magazine publications' thing years ago.

Don't forget not paying taxes, since giving our government money funds terrorists. Ahem, excuse me, freedom fighters.

Yes, but Curves is advertised as "a place for women" or some crap like that. It's sort of like the president of an all-black school giving tons of money to a white power group -- sure, little employees might contribute to that white power group, but if the president does it, the man who founded the school and the man who makes tons of money off it and the person who claims to want to help black folks, it's a different story.

Kay, I'm anti-abortion and Christian to boot, but I don't get why anyone would blame 9.11 on just that one issue. o.O Dumb, and makes the sane people who support such a cause look even stupider. 9.9 Yay for morons doing more harm than good. But it is the guy's money, his choice to spend it where he will. I don't get why the media has to crawl all over it. Musta been a slow news week (they sure don't cover other large donations to other causes).

Anywho~ what level are you in FFXI? Still 16/17? ^^ If you need the grass for the chocobo, lemme know and I'll go farm some for ya. :3

Hi!

FFXI is mostly the same, yeah. I leveled up BLM one level last night, but WHM is still hovering at 16. Fishing and cooking are doing well though! Heh, sometimes I wonder about my priorities. :)

I was just thinking this morning that I should find some grass now before I get to that city (it's 1000/unit there!). If you could farm it, I'd thank (and pay) you! Just let me know the going value of it in whatever city you are.

Thanks!
