This little essay is very, very amusing. While it's about maxipads, men shouldn't run away from it. It's not graphic at all, and it's more about body size and image than pads, and it's really really funny. I'm going to be running around saying "Teeny-weeny vageeny!" all day!

On related note, I feel like [livejournal.com profile] fealu_bryne and I'm really annoyed. This is the second week in a row that I haven't lost any weight. In fact, I gained a pound. Why? Why? Why? I eat no sweets, not one single cookie, candy, or sugary thing. Almost nothing I eat is fried. Heck, I don't hardly eat at all! 1-2 meals a day are fruit! Last night dinner was three breadsticks! I don't eat meat, so it's not like I'm eating fatty burgers or something. I walk 4-5 times a week! (But I highly doubt the walking (a mile, about 20 minutes/day) is enough to be building up any sort of muscles which would counteract any fat-weight loss.)

Bah. It's depressing. How could you be doing everything right, and still not be seeing results? It has to be one of two things: Either I'm taking in more calories than I'm aware of (unless I'm eating in my sleep, I'd be surprised if it was this one), or it's some sort of water-retaining issue. Dinner on Monday night was mega-salty, but you'd think by Wednesday morning that wouldn't be on the radar any longer...

FFXI: Last night was good. I got a ride to Windy (I "paid" for it, or at least I tried to. I /shout'ed the usual offer of 500g for the ride, and someone accepted. He took me and five other folks to the various crags. Before we left I tried to trade with him so I could pay him before we went, but he didn't accept the trade. Once we arrived I tried to trade again, but he vanished to the next crag. I /tell'ed him, but he didn't reply. Oh well! Twist my arm, I'll accept that free ride!). In Windy I passed the cooking test (*yawn*), then tried fishing for the 30-something level fish there. The speed was no different than the great catfish in Sandy, so I decided to go back home. (Before I left, I put all seven of the salmon subs (item for the first cooking test) on auction. As of this morning, all but two sold! Woo!)

I changed into monk (a level 1 job for me) and ran outside. Surprisingly, I had a hard time dying! Even without a weapon and no armor other than the fishing stuff, I killed and killed and killed! It was fun! I nearly leveled up, too! I never sat down and healed, and yet still I made ~450 XP before dying. I just may have to try that again!

Back in Sandy, I fished for a while, cooking bait as needed (yay a return to skilling up while cooking!). A little party almost formed with my LS friends, but it turned out I was a lower level black mage than I had recalled (8), so I was really too low level for them. But nicely, they power-leveled me up to 9! (Still too low for the party, but yay anyway! I needed to get to 9 so it'd be the right level for my subjob!)

After that I mostly just puttered around, vaguely cooking and grumping at the idiot AOLers. "lol!" "lmao!" Gods above, I miss being the headwiz of a MUSH. A day doesn't go by on FFXI that I don't want to smite some idiot.

All in all, it was a good night... even if dinner was only breadsticks. I'm starving this morning, but I'm sticking to fruit and just a couple nuts. I feel like a deer or something.

Isn't it awful? And then you feel like you're depriving yourself for no reason at all! I mean, if you're going to gain weight you might as well be eating all that crap stuff!

Don't fall for that one. Believe me.

Ha! I've had that thought, yeah. "If I'm not going to lose, I might as well eat! If I'm going to be fat either way, I might as well be *happy* and fat!" I'm resisting it though.

For the moment.

Encouragement

My husband experienced the weight gain thing while doing light sports and excercise and also found it demoralizing at first. I believe it was indeed muscle invisibly showing up in places you couldn't really see under the lovely squooshy coating. (Um. Chubby chaser here. Obviously. ) He eventually lost inches and lost weight- permanently it even seems, but he was not on a particular diet and was simply doing weekly excercise. It happened very, very, very slowly and seemed like weight gain at first. (He's still a bit chubby (yay!) but now plenty fit -which makes him happy.(yay!))

I think if you are feeling good doing the exercise you should assume all is going very, very well and the weight gain IS muscle and you just can't tell yet. If it's happening exceedingly slowly it's probably also healthy. (yay!) (People who quickly lose weight and then regain it risk heart disease later. Not something I wanted for sweetie!!!) Eat enough to have energy for the excercise and throw away the scale. Truly, the numbers don't matter. =)

That's the best advice I've heard in a long time! :)

Thanks for the comment, it really did help a lot (and made me smile!). I'm glad both you and hubby are happy with the new him!

Thanks! :)

I could be wrong, but judging by the sort of menus that you post, you might not be eating enough. If you're not taking in enough calories, your body thinks you're starving and tries to pack on as much stuff as possible.

You also have to realize a pound isn't much at all. People can fluctuate that much during the course of a day, easy. A lot of people suggest that you don't weigh yourself more than once a month, so that you don't freak yourself out over the daily fluctuations, instead seeing only the long term trends.

The 'not eating enough' thought did cross my mind, but I tend to have at least one really good/big meal a day (then one little one and one skipped or fruit), so I don't think it could probably be that...

And yeah, I know a pound isn't all that much, but it's the point of it! Go away! Away, damned pounds! :)

Thanks!

Heck, I don't hardly eat at all!

There's your problem right there. And the stuff I see you -do- eat is mostly quick-energy stuff with very little actual protein or good substance. You're eating, but you could still be suffering from malnourishment and thus your body is going into 'starving' mode. Meaning, it stores -everything- you eat, no matter what.

Get protein, vitamins, minerals, the good stuff your body needs to function. Since you're not a meat-eater (which is a great way to get this stuff your body needs to survive), get yourself some supplements or something. You can't cut back as much as you are without putting your body through hell. ^^ Eat three balanced meals, try and keep your eating to a schedule, don't eat 3 hours before bed, stuff like that. Your body will love you for a decent schedule of food, expecially if it's not 'empty calories' food.

Sorry for the delayed reply, my server just came up and I'm only now getting email.

Yep, I take one of those "complete" vitamins every single day without fail. Seeing how I've cut out a major food group, it seemed especially important.

See, the funny thing is that (other than in the morning), I'm not hungry the rest of the day. Dinnertime comes and I'm like "I really should eat something, but... meh.". I've been trying to force myself to eat something, even if it's only a little. :)

Apparently, lack of lipids and glucose to the brain cause memory leakage. Because I've rarely met anyone 'on a diet' to whom I didn't have to repeat myself constantly.
The above are very good points, and all things you've been told before. Weight fluctuates, and muscle is denser than fat. Not eating not only causes appreciable health problems, but will ultimately cause weight gain.

People who confer with nutritionists (or are in a nutrition class), are often surprised by how much they're undereating. If you're eating the right sorts of food in the proper proportions, you end up eating a lot. And the more you can spread this out through the day, the better...keeping the metabolic fires stoked, so to speak. A couple of smaller meals is better than one big one.

Snerk. Oh, like I didn't have memory issues before this! And yes, I know weight changes for seemingly no reason at all, muscle weighs more, and not eating is bad. The first two items I included in this post, and the last one is common sense.

In general, I eat when I'm hungry. The thing is, other than in the morning, I'm almost never hungry. Nine times out of ten, I have to force myself to eat lunch and dinner. It's odd...

Also, um, you're playing a lot of Final Fantasy, yes?

I sat in front of the computer a lot before playing Final Fantasy, what with mushchat and webbrowsing and other video games.

But, er, Kevin and I often comment to each other blithely how much less we do now that THE ADDICTION is here. We're such naughty people, we tell each other.

Anyhow, I get even less exercise than I used to get just wandering around the house doing chores and playing with the dog.

i am utterly, entirely, head over heels in love with that site now.

also, due entirely to my quoting your posts at him relentlessly, i've nearly convinced the bf to get me FFXI! we're obsessive DAOC players (or rather were when we had broadband, which i must have back, i must, my preciousssssssss) and the crafting in FFXI sounds SO fun. now to wake him up and talk about it some more...

*dances*

As I'm sure you've realized in all the times we've known one another, I know shockingly little about health and nutrition and stuff. I consider "diet" to simply be little more than "die with a t", and I'd way rather be fat than happy than slightly less fat and hating life. Maybe it's because I'm a guy, maybe it's because I'm lazy, maybe it's because zombies ate my neighbors, I don't know.

My dad did tell me quite recently, though, that apparently after five hours or so of not eating, your metabolism slows way down because it thinks you're starving. Maybe instead of skipping that third meal on occasion, you should 'force' yourself to eat fruit, and maybe instead of one big meal, two slightly smaller meals.

Now of course I make these suggestions with approximately 3 minutes of dietary experience under my belt, so take them with a grain of salt. Unless your diet doesn't allow for much sodium, in which case I'm sorry that I can't help you. ;)

Man, you're actually getting funny in your old age! ;)

That sounds like reasonable advice, so thanks!
