Happy thought of the afternoon.

Quote:

"US soldiers who detained an elderly Iraqi woman last year placed a harness on her, made her crawl on all fours and rode her like a donkey, Prime Minister Tony Blair's personal human rights envoy to Iraq said Wednesday.

The envoy, legislator Ann Clwyd, said she had investigated the claims of the woman in her 70s and believed they were true."

I'm going home and playing FFXI, where the only things that get abused are monsters created for that reason.

Just goes to show that, like FFXI, not everyone is an honorable, or even nice person. *shrugs* It happens with all countries in all wars. These aren't the first prisoners to be abused, by -any- nation, and won't be the last. Human nature is a dark, terrible thing.

I tend to think of this sort of thing as 'human failure', rather than 'human nature'. If 'human nature' was like this, the world wouldn't be in as good shape as it is.

Then again, I tend to think in engineering terms. We talk about 'failure modes' for various things...The way in which they break and the secondary harm that is done by that particular type of breakdown.

In that light, I tend to view war crimes as one of the worst-case 'failure modes' of both moral education and military discipline.
