thistlechaserI watched the two eps of Trigun which Tivo recorded for me, and my reaction now is about the same as when I tried to watch it the first time: Meh. For the most part I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. Unfortunately being dubbed really hurt it (unlike WHR): The VAs of the two female characters made me want to claw my ears off. On the other side of the coin, I could listen to Vash's VA for hours on end (I don't feel that the voice matches the character's look, but it's still a wonderful voice to listen to).
The art style bothers me more than the female voices. Remember my post about how I no longer saw anime as anime, just as animation? Bzzt! I guess that post was incorrect and instead I'm watching anime in a style I like (realistic) instead of things like Trigun. Odd eyes, noses which are either just a point or a knife, funky mouths... but worse is the unrealistness of the expressions and such. And they used " n n " eyes! Ack! I thought that was just some awful, awful cliche, but they actually had characters' eyes go all " n n " !! Bah, blech, ugh.
There was one really good thing though, and that was the music. Even if I don't decide to follow the series for the story, I'll let the eps run in the background so I can hear the music. (This is odd, as usually I don't care much about music in a series...)
So I'll keep recording it and watching it for now, but I'm far, far from hooked.

Oh boy, have I been busy on FFXI in the last 24 hours! In an attempt to catch up with others, I wanted to get as much of rank 3 done as I could; I didn't expect to be able to get it all finished, but I wanted to get a good chunk of it out of the way.
Having read that you could do the first one (Infiltrate Davoi) solo (so long as you could make yourself invisible somehow), I grabbed a chocobo and rode out to Jugner Forest. The very first problem was nearly a show-stopper: Davoi wasn't listed on the Jugner map! Eek! The place is so darned big, I didn't think I'd ever be able to find it on my own. I started out by /shouting and asking people where it was, but got no reply. I checked if any LS people were on, but I was alone. I checked for mentors, but there were none. But yay! Upon reaching the orc camp, things got reallydeadly exciting. I cast Invisible on myself and warily made my way through the orcs. I followed the instructions others had posted, and reached a bridge. There I waited for the NPC to arrive. Waited, waited, waited. Finally he came and I cast Cure on myself to make Invisible drop (is there an easier/faster way?). As he reached the bridge, I tried to talk to him. Target out of range. Target out of range. He turned around and started running off. Target out of range. Eek!
I had been warned about crossing the bridge, so I cast Invisible again and waited/hoped for him to come back. Eventually the NPC did return, so I dropped Invisible and tried to talk with him again. Since he was still too far away, I approached the end of the bridge. Not wise! I didn't even read the text, just kept hitting enter as fast as I could. Once it was over I triggered my Instant Warp scroll, but it wasn't soon enough. I was aggroed by an orc, and his first hit was a critical one, doing 170 HP! Eek! More than half my HP! Luckily the Warp worked before he could hit me a second time, and I got back home alive. Whew!
Since that didn't take long, I decided to do the second (and final) quest. NPC wanted a crystal bass (fish). That's it? That's it? Hee, I ran to the AH, bought one, handed it in. Easy as that (with a little extra running around), it was done!
Between the two tasks, I turned in crystals. I should have done it differently because I think I turned in too many, but either way my rank bar got totally full!
Just because I was curious, I did that fame-lowering quest (castle floorplans) after finishing the Crystal Bass one. It was interesting, but I have to remember to do a couple turn-in quests to make up for it.
Since we're going to Jeuno on Thursday (I think), I decided to be ready for the third Gobbiebag expansion. Problem was, two of the four items needed cost over 35,000! Eek! I had enough money for one of them, and over the rest of the night (and this morning) set out to make the rest. By selling the most expensive things I own (sniff, poor tree saplings! Bye bye!) and fishing, I just barely had enough to get the second expensive item (38K). This morning I picked up the last two (really cheap, under 2K each). So now I have all four! Woo! (Darned goblin better give me the quest tomorrow!)
Last note: Moving my gardening to my mule instead of my main character is working out really well. Not only do I get all of the pots out of my main character's safe, all the crystals are gone, too! (I was keeping some of every single kind on hand for the plants. Lots of space!)

I kind of like the more cartoony feel of the show... and it becomes much, much more serious after the first... perhaps 8 or 9? Then you see way less of goofy, off-the-wall Vash, and much more of his darker side. Which is why I like the first half of the series more. :( Sounds like me, eh? ;)
