FFXI, Lost, Naruto
Oct. 28th, 2004 09:24 amNaruto: I watched 105 this morning, and while I hate this arc more with every ep, I was happy to see Ibiki in it. That man rocks my socks; he's probably my favorite adult character in the series. Poor fellow, saddled with such a useless brother! :p Hate, hate, hate the "stun gun" sword. What a stupid idea. I wish this filler arc would end!
FFXI: While checking the AH before work this morning, I sort of tumbled into a Halloween event! The GMs were out and about, "dressed up" in costume, handing out stuff! I got fireworks (and a /bow!!) from a GM dressed as a goblin! :) He didn't /bow to anyone else at all, so maybe he was impressed by my crafting clothing? Another GM (dressed as a Mandy) gave me more fireworks. :) There was only one other GM in the area (a crawler), but I wasn't near that one and got nothing from it.
There are different types of GMs? I saw GMs with "A-GM" and "L-GM" and just plain "GM" icon next to their names...
Too bad this event went on at such a sucky time for NA players! (it was about 6:45 AM PST). Maybe they'll do it again later.
Lost: I was very sorry to see that the info I was spoiled with was correct. The ep's big surprise wasn't a surprise to me, which was a very sad thing. But oh boy! Was it a great ep anyway!
The spoiler I had read (not on purpose) was that Sun could speak and understand English. I hadn't known the reason though, so at least that was a surprise.
Last night, after watching the ep, I had thought that I missed something in the ep or that the writers had expected us to assume something: It was such a hard decision for Sun to leave Jin, I thought I had missed something bigger he had done to her. Was he working too long hours? Bringing his work home with him too much? And then, when Sun had said he had a temper, I had taken her word for it and assumed that was correct.
The scene with them in the airport, the clock at 11:15, almost made me cry. It was so hard on her! And she wanted to leave him! But for some reason I hadn't known, I wanted her to stay with him. My chest hurt with wanting them to stay together, but I hadn't known why.
It wasn't till this morning while I was thinking about this in the shower that I realized why it hit me so hard: I had been wrong. He loved her, and if he had been working too long or too hard, it was for her. He never had a temper that we saw (right?). He was doing everything for her, and she was going to leave him anyway. He put himself under her father's thumb, did bad things he didn't appear to like doing, all because he loved her so much. And she was just going to leave him!
So I think that's why it hit me so hard: He loved her enough to do anything (stand up to her father and ask for her hand, then follow the father's orders and do bad things), all for her. What powerful love!
It's interesting that I started out assuming that just because she was the woman and she was crying over the relationship that she had been in the right. Today I'm questioning her (and myself!). This man, so below her in station, did everything just for her! And, as we saw in the airport, he still loved her!
...hm. Or maybe there's another angle to this? Maybe she was going to leave so that then he could get out from under her father? Maybe she was doing it for him?
---
Locke: OH MY GOD. He is starting to scare me. He talks like he has some sort of personal connection with the Island! The whole thing with Charlie (knowing he was on drugs, then knowing where the case was). Gah!
Jack: What the heck? He's acting like there's no chance of rescue at all, and they're going to live on the Island for the rest of their lives. That's kind of... odd. Especially since they know there are monsters and insane stuff (polar bears!) out there! Very strange.
Sayid is very hot. Yes indeedy.
Spoilers are bad. Without the surprise, Lost isn't as much fun. If anyone on my flist posts Lost spoilers without LJ-cutting them, I'll have to defrend you. :)

Date: 2004-10-28 09:42 am (UTC)This episode was more about Sun than Jin. I wonder if they'll have a Jin-centric episode, too? Or whether they consider it a Jin/Sun-centric?

Date: 2004-10-28 09:46 am (UTC)We have Jack and his father; Sun and her mob-boss father ('You don't know my father'). Kate and the marshal (father figure maybe). Hmmm... Interesting.

Date: 2004-10-28 10:18 am (UTC)I noticed that, too. I semi-hope that's by chance, otherwise this will turn even stranger!

Date: 2004-10-28 11:26 am (UTC)That's the key there. She said he had a temper. We haven't seen it. He *might* still have a temper.
I am willing to have my opinion on this change later, but watching their relationship develop over time through the flashbacks, the one thing that went through my mind is showing how he changed. Yes, it was very impressionistic and superficial, but even with the flower in the airport, there is nothing to say that the reason she was thinking about leaving was because he *had* changed, through the long hours, through the bad things he was having to do for her father.
The flower reminded her of the man she fell in love with, but there is nothing so far to say that he *doesn't* have a temper and that he hasn't becomea hard man as a result of the years he's put in being what looks like a member of the Korean Mob.

Since the title of the ep was "House of the Rising Sun", a lot of people are hoping for an ep from his POV instead of one just from hers. (I'm drooling at the idea of seeing the meeting with the father and the jobs he has to do from his POV!)
I think it's reasonable to believe that he could have a temper, but I'm not convinced of it. I want to watch the ep again this weekend. There was something about the way Sun looked when she told the other woman "he has a temper". Something was off. Either she was lying or it was more than that (like he beat her or something along those lines). Or I could be totally wrong! :)

Date: 2004-10-28 01:27 pm (UTC)I got spoiled almost two weeks ago, and once I knew the info, I kept picking up on little "Ooooh! Yeah, look! She looks like she understands!" Or "is about to speak!" or whatever. Once I looked for them, all the signs were there! (So you have good eyes!)
Gah! I want to watch more right now
In some ways I envy people who will be able to sit down and watch the entire series for the first time as a whole... but in a way I don't. The wait is kind of fun! All the thinking I do about it! All the message boards and LJ posts! :)

Date: 2004-10-28 01:02 pm (UTC)Y'know, when I first read through that, I read it as 'bipolar bears'. Insane+bears=hazard to health. XD
And as for Locke, didn't he see the drugs when he snuck up on Charlie and found he was standing on the beehive? That would make a lot more sense then him having this "mystical connection" with the island and such.
Don't get me wrong, I love the premise of Lost, but I worry if they'll start with the sci-fi hook and end up jamming it down our throats.

Date: 2004-10-28 01:23 pm (UTC)Hee! That sounds like a great line of teddy bears!
And as for Locke, didn't he see the drugs when he snuck up on Charlie and found he was standing on the beehive?
Did he? I should watch the ep again. I know Charlie was about to do his drugs and had them out in hand, but did Locke see them? Was he at the right angle to see them? And even if he saw a baggie, would he know they were drugs? Especially if there was just a little bit of powder left? I don't know. :)

Date: 2004-10-28 02:40 pm (UTC)Personally, I think he'd see the baggie from that distance. He might have even heard the crinkle of it as Charlie pulled it from his pants, but as for seeing the drugs directly? Nah. He probably didn't have enough time for more than a quick glimpse in the first place.
Tricky, tricky show. :D

Date: 2004-11-01 11:34 am (UTC)There was an episode on Angel a while back where a couple's relationship was destroyed when one of them killed someone to protect the other. Specifically, they killed a villain *before the other person could, to prevent THEM from becoming a 'killer.'* Ironically, that tainted them in the eyes of the person who was going to kill the villain. Basically, whichever of them had killed the villain, the other wouldn't have respected any more.
I think that's what's happened with Sun and Jin. I am perhaps reading a lot into this, but I think that by Jin joining the family mob, he's been "tainted" in Sun's eyes and he's just not the man she fell in love with. The flower at the airport reminded her that there was a little of the old him still left, but the ruthless way he tackled the guy who'd been talking to her reminded her that a lot of the sweet young guy has been replaced by a hardened thug, perhaps a _killer_, and I find her view a lot clearer.
I don't find Jack's approach to the situation at all inappropriate. They're at least a thousand miles off-course. It's been a week and they haven't already been found. Priority 1 is survival, priority 2 is facilitating a rescue. Survival requires fresh water, shelter; priority 2 requires surviving, plus getting firewood. What I don't understand is the schism that seems to have formed. It seems logical to me that most of the people should have gone to the caves and started setting up a camp, with a small party working on the signal fire in the meantime. It's just another task that the community needs to see done. Eventually a different shift of people will need to swap out for a couple days. It is risky but they're in danger everywhere: the mysterious monster, the boars which are still near the beach they said, the stray polar bears, anyone who goes crazy, any food that is poisonous, random bee hives...
Anyway. Locke is scary. He's looked right AT that big thing and he's not telling. Besides that, I'm looking forward to Pouty Lifeguard boy's backstory.

Date: 2004-11-01 02:43 pm (UTC)Agreed. And I wonder if that's why she pushed for them to run off to America and get married? I wonder if she knew he might get pulled into the family mob?

A lot of people suggested that, yeah. I know it's a reasonable plan, but if I was stuck on an island full of monsters I wouldn't want to be planning to stay there long-term. Not sensible, I know...
