Yu-Gi-Oh is a cartoon that aired in Japan first, then was translated and brought here. I've always said it had rather slashy tones to it, but a line this weekend took the cake:

"You're going down, Kiba, in more ways than one!"

I heard it, boggled for a moment, then hit rewind (Tivo lets you pause and rewind live TV) so I could make sure that's what it really said. It was.

How could they have missed the potential dual-meaning of that? Heehee!

Hee! It's like The Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time, where all the female characters call Link "fairy boy" because of the fairy that follows him everywhere he goes. Um... hello? Does that mean the same thing in whatever country that game was written in as it does here? ;-)

The exception being that movie you saw, which was made in Japan for us and released here first. ;) So it was dubbed in English before Japanese.

But mmm, slashiness.

Jessie: Look, a diamond fit for a queen!
James: Sounds good to me!

Jesse: When you get involved with the opposite sex you're only asking for trouble.
James: Yes, and that's the kind of trouble I stay out of.

Gotta be intentional double entendre in Pokemon. In Yu-gi-oh, I don't know the context of that line, but it could just be a physical descent in elevation, if there was a building or cliff or something!

But, come on, if you were in this industry, wouldn't you be all over being able to put subtle lines like this into programming, such that people would giggle and impressionable youths would completely miss it?

J&J in Pokemon had to be totally intentional, yep.

But, come on, if you were in this industry, wouldn't you be all over being able to put subtle lines like this into programming, such that people would giggle and impressionable youths would completely miss it?

Oh, I'd love to be in that position! But unfortunately I don't think any company in their right mind would let me. ;)
