thistlechaser: (Buh?)

I made my last post before reading my flist, wandering FFXI boards, or really seeing anyone else's opinion on the new stuff. Now that I have seen what others have been saying, I can pinpoint those who like the new changes:

People with no attention span. People who hadn't been willing to put the time/effort into fishing before. "Thank you, SE! I gained 58482750257023 skill in negative time! I like fishing now!" That really pisses me off. Fishing had been something where your massive amount of time invested paid off, and now? New fishers can flood the market and get fast skillups with little time invested. The children have been catered to.

Everyone who had put major time/money/effort into fishing before the patch? Well, maybe now the fishing guild can join the leathercrafting guild in using the motto "Bend over and enjoy it, bitch".

Ha ha. I feel so disgruntled. I need to stop caring about fishing, really.

I gave up on fishing before I even hit level 40. It took me hours after I hit 38 to get even a few tenths of a point. I mean 3 or 4 hours a day for several days. And yes, I was in the right place. So I decided fishing wasn't for me. I thought maybe this patch would make me get back into it. Probably not though, meh.

In fishing, 38 is still pretty high level! I liked fishing because of that high requirement for time-investment -- if you were a high level fisher, people knew you must be dedicated to it! But that'll be gone now, and everyone who put all the hours into it (I once fished 10 hours for .2 increase!) wasted all that time...

Well, it wasn't so much the time issue as what happened during all that time with no skill gains. I would fish for hours at a time(zoning every hour or so just in case), and even during the first hour each day I would have around 30 "you didn't catch anything" messages before I would get even one bite. And this always happened, so it frustrated me to the point where I completely gave up.

I only started to get "no bite" messages after 2-3 hours of fishing last night. I think they're really increased the "fatigue" if that's any indication, but I'll accept that if the 2-3 hours leading up to it are almost constant bites that I can reasonably land. (Which is what I was doing last night.)

I was pretty stunned that I got .4 of skill ups while finishing Gold Carp last night. .4 skill up in only 2-3 hours of puttering around. That was pretty stunning.

On the other paw, I really did enjoy other people being around to chat with. People were interested in fishing again. Sure, some people griped, but for the most part people seemed to be enjoying it and learning how to do it again.

I want to do more fishing before I truly decide if I love / hate it, but so far I'm leaning towards like. Heh, and you can hardly call me a casual fisher ;)

There is that, I do like learning how to do something new... but I'll really miss being able to fill up a day with fishing. (And I still feel really bad for Draque, who worked so hard to get such a high level and now can't fish at all.)

Not being able to fish at all is a choice ^^; He can do it in small stints (even if it's 20-30 minutes at a time) if he desired. (And I'm really advocating the use of typing gloves if that's part of the problem).

They're changing player behavior and it might do so in a good way. Less profit in fishing, more people might move to farming, more people farming, means crafted goods might come down 'cause the supply of low level materials has increased and competition has renewed.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be pretty bummed if I was making most of my gil off fishing like D does. But they nerfed fishing for me to the point of "hobby" about 3 patches ago. I only really bother with "time-killer" fishing and "rusty" fishing anymore. Crafting and farming treat me well when I'm looking for the gilz. But with this new system, it's intriguing, so "skill up" fishing might actually come into play again.

It was my understanding that D couldn't fish anymore, period. If he could do it like 20-30 minutes an hour (or every couple hours), at least that'd be something!

Less profit in fishing, more people might move to farming, more people farming, means crafted goods might come down 'cause the supply of low level materials has increased and competition has renewed.

I was thinking about that. But also, that would mean less profit in farming. It's all so complex!

I'll be interested to see how I (and others) feel about this in a few weeks, once the "emotionalness" of it wears off.
