I wasn't intending to post yet today, but a link in a comment from [livejournal.com profile] quasilemur prompted me to do it early.

Michigan Preparing To Let Doctors Refuse To Treat Gays

(Lansing, Michigan) Doctors or other health care providers could not be disciplined or sued if they refuse to treat gay patients under legislation passed Wednesday by the Michigan House.

I'm boggling, simply boggling. What the hell is wrong with people? What if I didn't like black people or Jewish people, could I have the same laws passed? How in the world does this sort of thing happen? What's wrong with people?

I'm ashamed to be in the same species as these "people".

---

Grump. I have no idea what else I had intended to post about this morning. Maybe I'll remember later and make another post, or maybe I'll just go off in a corner and cry about how horrible "people" can be to other people.

...Wow. I'm suddenly really glad I didn't eat lunch, as now I feel like throwing up. I don't understand how such a thing could even be considered... there's got to be something against doing things like that, isn't there?

Maybe it's just cuz I'm a kid or something, but... I don't understand the world... and the world scares me.

Then we're both kids. I don't understand the hatred. I don't understand how this discrimination can be /accepted/.

I just don't understand people, period.

That's the thing that scares me. What about all those poor people... and if something like this can be passed, what's to stop other things as well?

...It just makes you want to move to another planet or something and hide.

. . . the reality of it won't even sink in. I'm in shock. I'm almost crying here, because it hurts me to know that someone can hate a group of people so much, for no valid reason.

What the hell is wrong with these creeps?

Is it just me, or is the United States regressing back into the Dark Ages?

"Regressing" isn't the word I'd use. I'd say "running just as fast as its feet can carry it". I'd bet money that these people would like a world like the Dark Ages: Burn "witches" and "faggots", force religion onto every person, kill anyone who disagrees with them... *sigh

What I'm wondering is, what the hell happened to the Hippocratic Oath?

what the hell happened to the Hippocratic Oath?

Maybe the problem is is that it's not in the bible? :p

Usually the stuff you post honestly doesn't offend me. I roll my eyes, of course, but I try to just sort of take it with a grain of salt. A lot of people don't like gays. I strongly disagree with them, I think gays should have rights, but I can at least to some small extent partially try to see them part of the way. They're not all completely and entirely wrong simply because they disagree with gay rights...

But this seriously, seriously hit a nerve. I was appalled by that article, and I'm rarely appalled. That's such a flawed mindset on so many levels that it's infuriating. That's like saying a Christian doctor should not perform work on somebody who had ever lied or even for a moment dishonored their parents without repentance. Why not just not perform on all non-Christians? I was... honestly... quite scared, and I hope these particular individuals see the light before this "gay" thing spirals out of control.

There's the whole "who's next?" thing to this, yeah. What if some doctor doesn't like black people? Or fat people? Or people who are X religion? What laws will be passed then?

and I hope these particular individuals see the light before this "gay" thing spirals out of control.

I hope so as well, but I highly, highly doubt it.

What. The. Fuck.

I'm totally shocked and appalled at all this. Where do people get off passing legislation like that? I'm assuming that these are the same people who will cry human rights abuse when someone takes a birth control pill...yet they're completely willing to let someone die for being gay? WTF?!

Stop the world, I want to get off.

Keep track of the doctors who do that. They'll be banned from our island.

*pets you* Don't cry. Right now there isn't much we can do about laws like this. We voted and shit is still happening.
At any rate, change will happen, and it won't be very long before lawmakers see that its not ok to discriminate for any reason. Four years happens faster than we think.

As twisted as that is, there's still hope that the law can be overturned by the Federal Courts/Supreme Court if there's enough uproar. Bush's beliefs and politics don't mean diddly to the Supreme Court.

P.S-Remind me never to get sick in Michigan. I'd rather die in a ditch then have some homophobe refuse to treat me.

I see this as a fine reason to never, ever go to Michigan.

First, I'll start by saying: Yes I am Republican. Yes I lean right of center. Yes I have issues with some gay rights "issues."

Now the only question i have, and I'm sorry to come into this conversation late, is how verifiable is this story?

The only references on the web I could find are a bunch of GBLT support websites. There is no mention on any major newsmedia websites... no mention in any major political blogs... heck, even the Michigan governmental websites have no reference to a "Conscientious Objector Policy Act."

This sounds far fetched, and just very well may be. But, it wouldn't be the first time that opponents to a predominantly Republican government would make up a story just to make people angry.

I hit Google to see what I could find. I came up with the bill itself (http://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/2003-2004/billengrossed/house/htm/2003-HEBH-5006.htm) (while I'm not a lawyer, as far as I can tell by reading it it appears to be trying to put into law what that news story claimed).

This story here (http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/news.aspx?id=13224) (which appears not to be a GBLT support website, from the once-over I gave it) quotes Associated Press. (Checking to see if I can find a link from their site directly...)

The person who wrote the story which is being republished elsewhere (the one I linked to) is "Amy F. Bailey is an Associated Press writer". I checked the AP site itself (ap.org) but I can't do much of a search of it (any useful searching of the site costs money).

So I don't have a full answer for you. Amy F. Bailey is real and works for AP and covers that area of the US (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&c2coff=1&q=%22Amy+F.+Bailey%22+%22Associated+Press%22&btnG=Search), but more than that I couldn't turn up in my few minutes of searching from work. I guess we'll have to wait and see; if it does become law, then it really should get more coverage...
