A hard decision (FFXI only)
Apr. 29th, 2005 01:35 pmWhen I first started playing DRK, I said I wanted to be the best one the best one possible. Know my abilities as well as possible, be able to hit my macros without thought, to have the best equipment possible.
As part of that, at level 59 I'd need a Haubergeon. Though that's a whole 9 levels away, I knew it'd cost a lot (I figured around 2 million), so I went and checked the prices today.
I was wrong. It wasn't 2 millions. It was nearly 5 million.
*cringe* I've never even spent 1 million on anything, so where in the world would I get 4,800,000+? And worse than that, this really isn't "exceptional" DRK armor, it's the expected stuff (along with sniper's rings). But how to get so much money?
At first I thought I'd just make arrows endlessly. Spend every weekend in Jeuno making and selling them. I could probably make a couple million in a few weeks... but I'd be bored out of my mind and probably hate the game by the time I had enough money.
As I was thinking about this problem, I checked someone's bazaar. He had a Lu Shang's Fishing Rod listed for just over 2 million.
2 million for selling one item. An item that I have. An item I never use.
Hmmm.
I was going to wait at least until tonight. Think it over. Be sure. But I hate fishing now. SE ruined the system and I never want to fish anymore. I have not fished in weeks. I need to break rods to level woodworking, and I don't even want to do that much fishing. Plus, if I ever wanted to I could buy a new rod. The prices are falling. I have the key item, and that's the important part; the rod is replaceable.
So today I listed my Lu Shang for sale at the AH for just over 2.5 million. (History was 2,600,000-2,800,000 with a few at 3 million. 4 currently for sale. Higher than 50,000 listing fee.) It was a hard decision, but I think it's the right one. I never want to fish. I can't make myself fish. I hate the system. And I love being a DRK and still want to be the best one I can.
When I hit 59, I will have a Haubergeon to wear.
Edit: I did consider buying the raw materials and having it crafted, but they cost more than the finished product. One of the ingots alone cost 3,800,000. I would never do a synth with an item that costs so much, and so I wouldn't really want someone else to do it for me, either.

Date: 2005-04-29 09:35 pm (UTC)Thing is, there is nothing to be ashamed of in wearing AF. Don't stress if you can't buy something that costs 5million. I learned the hard way how that can be. x.x It nearly made me quit playing, and it was only thanks to Aur that I was able to get vermillions.
Yeah I have it now, but never again will I let an item ruin my playing of the game. You don't need uber equipment to be good. I buy what I can, when I can, and don't sweat the rest.
This all said.. let me know if I can help? :) It's something to take pride in knowing you worked for something like that. (Just don't let it consume you...)

Date: 2005-04-29 09:58 pm (UTC)Yeah. At least this should be able to last me a while. (Maybe till into the 70s? Not totally sure, haven't looked in detail that far ahead.)

I know DRK isn't unique in this, but: Most of the AF isn't really great for XPing in. A few pieces have ATT+, but I
wantneed ACC+ as well as ATT+. Ceh has said it outright: No one in the static would kick me out for not having this, but I would be mad at myself if I didn't get it.But yeah, I'm not terribly stressing at it. Once I buy it and am down to 100 or so gil, then I might stress for a while. but not too badly right now. :P

Will do, thanks! *snug*

Date: 2005-04-29 11:39 pm (UTC)And as a ps: I think WHM, PLD, and MNK are the only full sets that are entirely useful :P (The only piece of MNK AF I don't use in XP are the Temple Hose, but if I were Counter-tanking something, I'd want them.)
I know DRK gets the shaft for useful AF, but don't give your enjoyment of the game the shaft by stressing over one piece of gear =|!

Date: 2005-04-30 04:22 pm (UTC)I do tend to swap out the body in favor of a green Justaucorps when I'm using wind instruments, though. The extra CHR is more important than +3 stringed instrument skill when I'm not using stringed instruments.
