Oddness...

Meat Can be Grown in a Lab on Industrial Scale. No more killing cows to get a steak, no more chicken-death to satisfy your McNuggets craving. The lack of animal death is good, but... gah. That's just still all sorts of freaky.

Fun timing on finding this link. It's nearly two years to the day since I last ate meat. I suppose I wondered at first if I'd stick to the whole no-meat thing, but now I can't imagine doing anything else. I was watching the Food Network last night (something I rarely do anymore), and they were doing a show on BBQ (which is why I don't hardly watch anymore). The guy said something like "Look how crispy that skin is! And how juicy the meat is!" and man, I couldn't change the channel fast enough. I felt like throwing up, just from the description! Gah, gah, gah. Eating skin! And "meat juice"? Blood! Holy cow, I don't even want to imagine eating skin.

Early on, someone had asked me if I minded that others ate meat at the same table with me, and I had honestly said it didn't bother me. I couldn't honestly say that anymore (but I would lie and say it doesn't bother me -- what I eat is my choice, I don't want my opinions changing what you eat). I suppose I feel the same way about it as meateaters might feel over people eating maggots or crickets or worms or something odd and gross like that...

---

In other news, I watched 10 eps of Bleach over the weekend! Man, I love that series SOOOO much! I'm liking it more than Fullmetal Alchemist even! Loving the storylines so much! And the characters, too! *drools on all the captain-interactions* I'm still about 6 eps behind the currently subbed one, so I still have lots to watch. :)

Last night something struck me: In Bleach, there's a silver-haired short captain with the same voice actor as Ryoma from Prince of Tennis. I have no problems at all with a VA doing voices in different series -- in fact, I enjoy it! That made me think about The Incredibles, and how the voice acting in it just totally annoyed me. Craig T. Nelson sounded like... Craig T. Nelson in it. I heard him, the actor, in the movie, not a character. That's the difference (or one of them) between US animation and anime...

I need to find a character guide so I can learn the names of who I love, but I especially like the red-haired guy with tattoos on his forehead (mmmmm), and the short silver-haired captain (mmmmmmmm, yummy voice, looks so nice!), and the fox-faced guy is so interesting! (Ha ha, another reason to read the manga, I suppose. You learn the character names much easier!)

Since AnimeOne seems to have stopped subbing Bleach, I switched to Lunar's subs. They do something odd (add accents/slang into the subtitles. Like "I ain't got no reasons ta be doin' that."). So long as that's accurate to the spoken Japanese, I actually sort of like it. (Though it's strange, since the characters spoke "normally" through all the eps I watched by the first subbing group.)

Yay Bleach!

I keep seeing people see that link for the first time and exclaiming over how gross it is. I keep being surprised that they're surprised by the concept. It seems perfectly reasonable to me since it's been showing up in science fiction for many, many years. If it tastes the same and is healthy (not filled with chemicals and crap), I actually don't see a problem with it beyond the fact that once it becomes widely accepted, there's probably going to be several species that will go extince or at least become rare or endangered.

I know, and I agree with you. It shouldn't be gross, and it should make folks like me happy, but... I don't even know why it bothers me. Genetically modified fruits and veggies don't bug me, so I really don't know what about meat sets me off.

It should be a good solution...

Actually, the short silver-haired captain is voiced by the same person who voiced Ed of FMA. :)

Hehe.. it's funny how truly different you and I are in about every aspect Thistle.. XD

Out of curiosity... Animals = food. They always have. Food for other animals... then food for cavemen... then food for more "intelligent" humans... why would that change? Even if no human ever again ate an animal for meat.. animals would eat each other in the wild. So if nature is the most logical model for life, why wouldn't humans eat animals as well?

Even funnier is how many people I'm just totally different from!

why wouldn't humans eat animals as well?

In general (read: In the case of everyone except me), I don't have problems with people killing animals for meat so long as the animals don't live in pain, be sick, suffer, etc. However, with the number of people on the planet, I know that that's not a posibility for how we currently live.

Me, personally, I stopped eating meat because it's "gross". I just got to thinking about it one day. Ever eat ribs and spot those big veins running through the meat? Ever cut into meat and find a blood clot? Or when you cut into a rare steak and the "juices" (blood) runs out? I get sick to my stomach imagining putting those things into my mouth. Nevermind the poor conditions these animals live in and are slaughtered in.

Now, these years later, all that has become more intense. When people talk about BBQs, I picture humans and animals trapped in burning buildings. Would you want to eat that sort of "crispy skin"?

These are just my opinions, and I would never think about forcing them onto others. I don't even bring it up (outside of LJ), unless directly asked.

The idea of lab-cultured meat is one that is necessary with our current population issues. Naturally, there are knee-jerk reactions to it, like anything else of that nature, but I'm not going to resign people to dying from Parkinson's because I might have some fundie moral objection to tissue cloning due to ignorance, and I'm not going to turn down a death-free, cost-effective source of meat just because some people might find it squick-worthy. It annoys me (I'm not jumping on you, I'm really talking about some of the people I've heard speaking on the subject; you just reminded me) when someone spews "save the animals" out of one side of their mouth, and "don't play god," or "ewww, gross," out of the other.

Or when you cut into a rare steak and the "juices" (blood) runs out?

Sure, that's one of the reasons I eat my steak raw. Of course, there's also the fact that it offends me when people overcook meat.

I agree with you (above the quote, anyway). It's gross and icky and unnatural, but necessary (if you want to eat meat, anyway). That being said, I doubt it'll be successful anytime soon. Too many people with too many baseless worries and such...

Either way, I'm happy to eat no meat -- natural or lab-grown.

Heh, whoops. 'Raw' up there should be 'rare'. That's not to say I don't enjoy raw meat as well, but I do prefer my steak heated up just a bit. :)

*snicker* Of course! And we even allow the folks we own to not only think of themselves as people, but we are gracious enough to let them think they have free will. :)

*sagenods*

We're just /that/ good to our pets. =^.^=

As long as you're not one of those wackjobs that force a vegetarian diet on their cat, I don't care what you eat. :)
