Damned trees... (FFXI)
Sep. 12th, 2005 09:56 pmI think I need a new hobby. No more NM chasing. Merlee mentioned that a NM was up in Jugner Forest. Fradubio, a walking tree. She had the mantle already so couldn't kill it, but Draque (SMN) and I jumped at the chance (even though neither of us needed it).
We outpost teleported out and hunted it down. Well, okay, back up a step. I don't know about Draque, but I dashed for the outpost teleport guy. I didn't stop to put on my real armor or anything, I didn't want to lose the chance to nab the tree. (And how many times have I said that DRK AF is worthless for anything important? I had nothing else on me, not my hauby or rings or anything. And amusingly, I didn't have the one semi-useful piece of my AF: the head (good for SEing). I was wearing my yag hat.)
So the two of us ran off and pounced the tree. I SA+TA'ed it and didn't move the HP much at all, but I was totally unworried at that point. I absorb-VIT'ed it and tried to judge what else to absorb. I wasn't missing it and it wasn't hitting me (hate was moving back and forth) so I figured VIT would be enough for now. (It wasn't aspir'able so I didn't want to waste MP.) I drained each time I could (twice).
The darned tree was very big, so I couldn't see what was happening with Draque at all, but the text was showing something about a Duessa. I thought maybe some PC came to watch and was getting AoE'ed. Near the end I swung around the tree to try to see what was going on there and found D rather mobbed with saplings spawned by the NM. Bah.
Carby died and I had the tree's full attention. One hit, two hits, three hits. I was in dark orange, so tried to 2hr. Stupid damned empty-headed me couldn't remember where my 2hr macro was, and the seconds spent having to look at the macro bar display did me in. By the time I was hitting it, I was dead. Poor Draque died a moment later. (I'm really kicking myself about that as much as anything else. I've had my macros memorized for ages! It's been months since I needed to look at them! How could I have forgotten?)
A bunch of people from the LS soon arrived (Aurian, Beanie, Chip, Nif, Niala, Caboose, and... did I miss anyone?) and they killed it. I got my first ever R3! Poor Draque got caught by an AoE while weakened and died a second time. Bah. No drops at all, not even anything worthless. *sigh*
If there's a small "plus side" to this, I don't think it would have mattered if I had taken my time. Even if I had had all my armor, even if I had used my 2hr, even if I had used my TP instead of holding it to try to keep from getting hate, I think Draque and I still world have died. (I can't judge how differently things would have gone if D had changed his subjob, but that tree had a crapload of HP. We didn't move it much at all. It took our level 74-75 LS folks a few minutes to kill it.) But even with that, this whole thing pisses me off. Not just that I died (I must have lost almost no XP with the R3), but... *childish whine* It wasn't fair. Damned stupid tree was in Jugner Forest, and we should have been able to kill it. (Yeah, yeah, I know that some zones can have much stronger NMs in them, but still!)
Screenshot of the big, ugly, stupid tree. I hate you so much! One day I'll be back and kill you myself.
Stupid me dead at the feet (roots?) of the tree.
I'm going to move to Bastok. No damned trees there. *grumble*

Date: 2005-09-13 05:20 am (UTC)Considering it was taking a beating from a 75MNK and 74DRG long enough for Beanie and I both to get 100%+ TP twice (and it survived a light skillchain), that sucker had a ton of HP. I also think it has AutoRegen on it, 'cause I could have sworn its HP were going up at the very start before Beans and I got into the beatdown rhythm. That was fun, let's do it again! XD

As much as Alla can be trusted, they said it did have an auto-regen on it. Bah. And I think Nif might want the mantle? He wrote down the ToD so maybe he wants to go out and kill it again? I'd be happy to help, assuming there were enough people.

Date: 2005-09-13 02:26 pm (UTC)oooh, shiny.
Date: 2005-09-13 08:25 am (UTC)I think it's kind of cute.. If you do go up against it again.. could you take a screenshot of the saplings? ^_^
So what happens when you "die" in the game anyway?
Re: oooh, shiny.
Date: 2005-09-13 02:25 pm (UTC)When you "die" (which is actually being knocked out, though everyone calls it dying) you either get a mage to come and cast Raise on you or you have to click on that button and return to your home point in the game. You lose XP either way, but you lose the most by home pointing and the least by getting the highest raise spell (Raise 3).
Re: oooh, shiny.
Date: 2005-09-13 06:18 pm (UTC)In my case, lets say I get slaughtered while I'm Black Mage 30th level...whichever raise I get I lose about the same XP, so it is a waste to cast a higher level one on me. Raise II is only beneficial at like level 50+ I think, and Raise III at like...60-ish. :)

Date: 2005-09-13 09:10 pm (UTC)Still really want to play, even though I keep finding out things I don't like about the game.
I suppose you can't climb trees and snipe at people/monsters from up there either?
(why yes, I am obsessed with trees)
