Anyone know a good way to kill ants? Preferably a way that will make them suffer? (Just joking on that second part...) They're coming in the heating vent in the /ceiling/ in my bathroom. I talked to the super for our apartment building, but she said if they're not outside all I can do is buy spray and spray them. (When they were coming in from the outside she had some super-strong poison stuff that killed them right off.)

They haven't made it to my kitchen yet, but it's not a long walk to it... and my cat's food is between them and the kitchen.

They actually have ant traps you can buy in grocery stores and such. They have bait that the ants take back to the nest and poison the bunch. They even smell yummy, like peanut butter!

They actually seemed to work well with us. After I used them for a little while, I didn't see ants anymore. Then again, we didn't have enough that I'm sure that it was the traps that did it. On the other hand, I swear the traps my mom used mutated her ants. After she started using them, the ants went from the normal little black ones to unbelievably huge ones. I think I killed one once that was a good quarter of an inch long. I've never seen such big ants.

At any rate, the traps might be a good thing to try with your cat around rather than the spray. Unless she eats peanut butter, of course.

I get commercial ant traps (like Raid) and put them in places where I see the ants. If they're on the ceiling, that's tougher, but you can get some double-sided tape and stick it there if you have a step ladder to reach.

Otherwise, I use 409 or Simple Green and spray down all visible ants, then wipe carcasses off with a paper towel. The soapy water kills them pretty quickly, and also cleans up their chemical trail which other ants follow.

Hate ants. Hates zem.
