After about two hours total (1 full hour to install from 5 CDs, 1 hour to download patches/updates/whatever), I was able to log into WoW for the first time. (Non-FFXI people: That's a really big difference right there, FFXI would have many, many hours of downloads.)

The opening movie and the background music were both amazing, but luckily I had known that the actual game would look nothing like that (I would have been seriously disappointed if I hadn't known in advance). The movie made me want to play: it had me grinning, it made me want to fight and adventure and have fun.

Character creation was easy as pie. I boggle at people who complain there's too much to do in the customization. (You have a number of options for four settings. It probably varies by race, but mine were face style, hair color, facial hair, and body color. There wasn't a big difference from one end to the other -- you could have ended up as nearly all black or nearly all grey. Other races probably vary a lot from that.) You got to pick whatever server you wanted to go on (man, WoW has like 50 of them!), including options like PvP and RP.

There's a line on the game's box that says something like "You can play without ever reading the manual!", and that was basically true. I, however, being the obsessive person that I am, read and skimmed it while eating dinner and during the install/downloading time. But once I started playing, I found I really hadn't needed to do that. (Other than one point: I wanted to change the keys you use to move. I had read about changing binding, so I knew it could be done.)

I had gone into this wanting "simple and non-challenging" and that is what I got in spades. No offense intended to WoW players, but WoW feels like it's made for small children. Big, bright, shiny buttons to press, so many sounds and noises. (So many NPCs talk! I mean talk out loud! So very strange.) The game seriously, seriously, seriously holds your hand through everything. Example:

NPCs who give you a quest you have a high enough level to accept have a symbol over their heads (if you're not high enough yet, the symbol is a different color). The symbol changes once you complete the quest. (If I'm remembering that correctly, anyway. It changes when you're done and can pick up your reward, right? I know it changes at some point.) If you get a quest to get X drops off mobs, as you kill mobs the game displays how many of those drops you've gotten so far! Like "9/15"! You don't even need to remember that you're collecting them for a reason! o.O

I'm embarrassed to say I'm still having a little bit of a hard time telling NPCs from PCs. (Or perhaps there are few to no PCs around the area I'm in.)

Oh, aggro is handled very differently, too. Heck, mobs in general: You hover your cursor over a mob to get its name, type, level, etc, and if it's aggro all that text is in red. I think I like actually needing to loot the bodies, that's nice and realistic. (Though now and then I forgot to do it.)

Instead of just learning your abilities as you do in FFXI, you have to buy them from a teacher. I like that a lot. (And I have to look up when I get a pet!)

The screen feels very, very, very "cluttered", but I suppose with the lower quality of the graphics that the cluttering won't take away from things as much.

[livejournal.com profile] gbeans: You've gotten your wish, sort of. I'm a Hunter on the game, which is sort of like a RNG/BST type job.

This is me fighting. You can see the "widescan" I get. The map is always there in the corner, and the mobs are always on it (unless I click the ability off, I assume). Seriously handy! You can see the quality of the graphics though. :/

This is me! But it's from the login screen, so it looks better than in game.

That second screenshot brings up a big issue I'm having with the game. I can't figure out how to move the camera! (I had wanted to take a picture of me in-game, but I couldn't get the camera to swing around to the front.) I assume the game just doesn't permit you to play in first person? But I'd like to be able to see more than my back during a fight.

It's not fair to judge a game based on only an hour of play, but at this point in time I can say that there's no way in heck that this game will ever replace FFXI for me. Was it a waste of its $50 cost? I think that's something I shouldn't make a decision on yet. I'm inclined to say it wasn't worth it, but how much of a game can you see in an hour? I'll be giving it lots more chances over the coming days.

Edit: Ha ha, I keep editing this post to add more things I remember. Here's another: I love how all of your clothing shows on your model! I changed my cape and it looked different!

Oops, and two more things. I got to level 4 and never had to sit once. Your HP regens on its own, fast. Even when I was killing things fast, one after another, by the time I reached the new mob I was back to 100%. *boggle* That's good, but... wow.

[livejournal.com profile] fyrebird: I lost your comment somewhere (gmail does something really strange and "stacks" comments, so I keep losing them), but I had thought you started playing! Oops. You get to be a lost sheep then, too. :P

You can change the camera angle by holding down the right mouse button and swinging the mouse around. If you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, you can use it to zoom in closer or back up. Glad to hear you're enjoying the game so far! :D

Oh, thanks! I wouldn't have thought of trying that. (In FFXI you don't want to touch your mouse, period. It swings the camera way too wildly, so most people just move it out of reach and forget it exists.)

Heh heh. Hunters are fun, aren't they? Just wait till youg et to level 10 and can do the quest line to tame any given beast type mob of your level or lower to be your pet.

...Don't do it immediately after you get the skill, though. Go to the guy the quest giver will refer you to to learn how to feed it first. Otherwise they'll get annoyed really quick and leave. Money's easy enough to get that you can ignore cooking safely if you want to save some inventory space, or, depending on what you get, you can generally find enough food to keep your pet happy.

My pet Raptor exclusively eats meat, so I tend to get enough random junk drops from wolves and such that he'll eat. I keep some cheapo-food on hand for him too, just in case I mess up and he bites it. (They don't like that at all, for some reason. ;) )

...Actually, I have a Tauren hunter alt on Feathermoon. How amusing is that? (He's got one of those cougars as his pet.)

Hunters are fun, aren't they?

The funny thing is that I've wanted a gun in FFXI forever, and I started with one in WoW! (And I hadn't known I'd have one, so that was a nice surprise.)

Woo, thanks for the info! I've been wanting a pet. :D (And I saw someone running around with a panda pet last night! I boggled a bit.)

Aww, feathermoon and Horde? ~_^ And I spent all night clearing out low-level dungeons to pick up neat greens to get you going.

Well, I'll hang onto them, if you end up on Perenolde Alliance, shout out. I'll send you a 'care' package with several bags and a whole buttload of greens (the bags so you can hold the stuff).

Yeah, sorry! Hyper is an old friend and I wanted to be able to say hi to him and stuff. But I'll poke you for sure when I start another character there! Thanks!

WoW just have a few things that FFXI don't. For me it's the time. But worst thing that WoW doesn't have are missions. The storyline isn't great, hell I couldn't even tell it was a story, looked like a normal quest to me. And the quests makes me feel like a slave: "Go get this, go kill that, retrieve that."

And my sister found this, you'll probably have some kicks with it:

*snickers at the link* I've seen that before, but it's still funny!

And the quests makes me feel like a slave: "Go get this, go kill that, retrieve that."

That's how I've felt so far, yeah. "The king wants 10 couger pelts!" *runs out and kills cougars* "The king wants 7 feathers and 7 meats off this bird!" *runs out and kills* At least in FFXI you get story with the "run out and kill/get items" quests.

Randomly stumbled across this while reading someone else's friends list...

I hated WoW when I first tried it. Now I have two level 60 characters and a ton of alts. -_- Coming from FFXI, WoW graphics did take a bit to get used to; I hated them at first as well. Ultimately, I got used to it and it wasn't even something I thought about until I read this. The newbie zones always seemed a bit more "cartoonish" to me than the rest of the game, anyways.

My advice is to tough it out until at least level 20 (which doesn't take that long to get). I hated my current character for the first 10 levels or so, but as I got more abilities and talents, it really picked up and I'm really having a lot of fun. My other advice is to give PvP a try at some point. Again, coming from FFXI, I didn't think I'd care about PvP and rolled on a "Normal" server. But after giving PvP a try, I found out I loved it, and ended up moving to a PvP server.

Good luck!

Howdy, stranger! :)

Thanks for the advice! I have tons of downtime in FFXI right now, so I'll have plenty of time to give WoW a fair shot (hopefully further than 20, too!). And yep, I'd love to try PvP, I just want to get my feet under me before I try something new and different like that.

Yes, it does hold your hand through everything. Which, actually, is a good thing for me. I tend to get frustrated easily (I've probably got undiagnosed ADD or something!)so it works. And admittedly, I'm easily impressed by just about any sort of graphics -- FFXI would probably have me falling over dead with shock -- so this works for me.

I guess, in general, WoW is more of just a "let's play to waste time!" sort of game that anybody can get into easily. FFXI isn't that, quite so much, because it was based off something that already has an immensely complicated storyline and very dedicated (obsessed!!!!) fans who're wanting to really get the experience of the original games for themselves.

For what sense that makes. Meh. I just woke up.

FFXI would probably have me falling over dead with shock

A year and a half after I started playing FFXI, and I still sometimes fall over dead with shock at how beautiful it is. Literally "breath taking" -- sometimes I stop to stare at a sunrise and forget to inhale! Heh.

But WoW has some nice stuff, too. The music is really pretty.

For what sense that makes. Meh. I just woke up.

That makes sense! I was thinking about it more, and I think I figured it out. FFXI = MUSH, WoW = MUD. In FFXI, the story is everything. You may have to do these silly "kill X mobs to get a number of Y drops to give to some NPC" quests, but there's story behind it, not just "the king wants this, so go do it". It could be that the drops are something the medical person needs to make medicines, or some old person needs to get over an old fear, or maybe the drop reminds someone of a lover -- basic story things, but story nonetheless.

Both are perfectly valid forms of games, they just offer a really different product. Now that I've played WoW, I can see how a player from there would probably hate FFXI endlessly. (*gasp* You have to learn stuff? Practice? Work? Are you insane? This is a game!)

Right, that's exactly how I was thinking about it. And honestly... MUDing is fun, sometimes. Especially when there's pretty pictures that animate when you're hitting things and making them die. ;)

From: [identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com

I need 'World of Fantasy'. :)

Not as ridiculously worky as FFXI, not as insipid as WoW seems to be. :) I'd even accept graphics that are worse that FFXI, but better than WoW.

Why do the games come in only two flavors: EXTREME and SIMPLE?

Ha ha, that'd work for me, too! No 787945031702572 hour CoP missions, but not the same "the king needs 5 plainsrunner meat! Go kill them and bring them back!" a million times.

I honestly didn't even start getting into WoW until like two months after I started it, but I think most MMORPG's are probably like that - only fun after you've immersed yourself in them.

I'm very glad you decided to make a tauren, because taurens are by far the most awesome things ever.

Also, check out all his /sillys and /flirts. You'll be glad you did.

It's the funniest thing, but I seem to sigh a lot! I'll be just standing around, doing nothing, then a great hugging sigh. :P

I actually haven't tried a single /emote yet! I need to get somewhere by myself and then check them out.

From: [identity profile] loneguardian.livejournal.com
You MUST /moo! You are tauren, you must must must use that emote. XDDD One thing I like about WoW is how people talk. Another reason I love the Trolls, especially on a RP server, they talk Jamaican (I can't spell that ._.) and the players actually -do- make an effort to copy the accent in text, it's so funny. XD

Date: 2005-09-29 04:00 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com
Yeah, I tried /moo tonight! Made me laugh out loud! :P /flirt scared me though! Heh.

Got up to level 6 tonight, between playing FFXI and other stuff. It's kind of working out to spend an hour here, an hour there, then an hour over something else.

It's highly odd that WoW sort of discourages you from playing for a long time... (That funky XP changing thing.)

From: [identity profile] peppygrowlithe.livejournal.com
The game kind of wants you to have multiple alts. There are a bunch of races and classes for a reason - they want you to pick the one most suited to you. As a druid, I deal really crummy damage, but I take forever to kill - as opposed to a rogue, who deals big damage but dies quickly. With the rest XP thing, you can safely have three or four characters going at a time without feeling "obligated" until you pick the best one.

At least, I think.

/moo is the best ever. Also, the Tauren /salute looks cool.

Date: 2005-09-29 04:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com
Yeah. That multiple-alts system is one of the biggest differences between WoW and FFXI. In FFXI, your one character can level any and all jobs (though of course not switch races, but no jobs are race-restricted).

I made a human last night, just to see what it'd be like. I love their starting town! The human animation bothers me a lot though (the arms are so stiff when they run!) so I don't know if I'll level him or not. It's surprisingly fun to kill wolves though! ;) I should have taken a screenshot, cause he looks pretty darned cool. Nearly black, bald, with short facial hair.
