Quickie post. Zzzzzzz.

FFXI: We had to do a CoP mission (that one against the professor and his students). Unfortunately we were uncharacteristically disorganized and I spent about three hours waiting for it to happen (I was an hour early in being ready, which didn't help). It was annoying as hell, not only was it a pain to get to (I used nearly a whole stack of sneak oil, goodbye 30K gil!*), but the fight itself sucked for slow-weapon-using me. The mob would vanish and appear elsewhere in the room every X seconds. I'd get one swing in, then the loooooonnnnngggg delllllllaaaaaaaayyyyyy before my next swing was ready... then before that second swing happened he vanished. Grrrrr. Plus the whole "DRKs suck against undead" thing. Hello, most of my abilities being useless!

(* I know I shouldn't complain about the loss of gil for sneak/invisible, but more and more I've been getting grumpy that mages can stealth for free while it costs non-mages an arm and a leg. Not a fair thing to be grumpy about, but this is my LJ and I'll be honest about my bitchings if I want to! :P )

Mucho thanks to Beanie and Nif, who guided us there through the worst maze day, helped us fight, and made themselves late for their own leveling. (So sorry, guys!) And to Zubis, who died trying to help. (Gah! Sorry, sorry.) I feel really bad that three people came to help us, nothing in it for them, and ended up being hurt by that. :/

The cutscenes and story were really nice, but my mind was elsewhere and the long delay in starting made me twitch at the lost time, so I didn't enjoy them as much as I might have. (No one's fault but my own.)

WoW: FFXI took the majority of my time tonight, but darned it, I was going to get from 9 -> 10 so I could get a pet! Leveling was boring boring boring as anything (I could level in FFXI if I wanted to kill the same mobs endlessly!), but eventually I hit level 10. Some guy blind invited me to party (no clue if that's as rude in WoW as it is in FFXI), but I used my hearthstone to warp right out and back to the town I needed to start the quest in.

Unfortunately the quest took a surprisingly long time (I couldn't find the last required mob!), and I ended up having to run to a whole 'nother city to finish it (thank god you can get from one city to another in minutes on this game), but I finished it! And amazingly (fall-down amazingly) I got more than a half-level worth of XP just for doing it. *boggle*

I didn't even try to tame a pet tonight. I'm too darned tired and didn't even want to look at any game anymore.

I wonder if WoW pets take part of your XP, like FFXI pets do? (I'd bet not.) And a "class" of NPCs is confusing the heck out of me: Ones with PvP under their name, what the heck are they for? Just for attacking someone from the other side if they come into the area? Sure are a lot of them around...

Dither-dither. I'm rereading the post, but I can't figure out if the FFXI part needs editing. No one is to blame for the delay or for my experience with the mission tonight! So I hope no one feels bad or thinks I blame them (or blame themself) or anything.

Boy, I'm tired. To bed with me! (Yes, I'm looking at you, [livejournal.com profile] zubis! ;) )

PVP enabled NPCs are generally the bane of PVP town raider's existances. Especially if they're not guards. You get attacked by them, they summon more guards, and you lose honor if you kill them., losing PVP rank and possibly losing some items/extra bonuses earned by being a decent rank.

RE: Pets and exp... I'm not even entirely sure if they take part of your EXP or not. They level up alongside you, but generally need a lot less to level. It stays roughly even since they seem to get very little EXP per kill anyway. (Glukk and Gulthak on Emerald Dream are level 23 and 22, respectively. His stats kick my guy's ass. Seriously. Beast Mastery talent tree can make them killers.)

Oh, as for the blind inviting, I'm not sure on it's rudeness level, but it can occasionally be in good form. Mainly if you're waiting for a specific quest mob to spawn and someone else comes along, if you group with them, the guy both becomes easier to kill and you can both get the reward be it just kill recognition or something it drops (which can be funny, since someone will drop like... five heads), so why not? ;)

I've never known it to be rude in WoW. People do it there when they see someone probably doing the same quest as them. You might not get as much xp when linked up BUT you usually manage to finish the quests faster and die much slower.

The pets don't take your xp! :D Instead, the pets have their own XP scale that goes up as they kill things with you. Warlock pets automatically level with their owners. Hunter pets level independently. Also, the pets loyalty levels as well, depending on how happy you keep your pet. Do not get a pet until you've picked up the "feed, revive" and so on abilities which I think, if I remember correctly, you need to get in either TB or Origrimmar. Also, keep large quanities of food at the beginning---it takes a lot of food to keep your pet happy at first.

The "pet not hurting your XP" thing is so handy! And I've noticed the food thing, too. Darned Fluffy is an eating machine! Of course he's also a killing machine, so I'm happy enough to feed him.

The need for food goes down as your loyalty level goes up. So, at first with any new pet (I think you're allowed 2-3 more pets over time and you can just stable your first), you'll be feeding them constantly. Once they're loyalty level gets above 5, it's not nearly so demanding. In fact, I rarely would feed the pet I had back when I actively played a hunter. :)

Wow, everyone in the party can get the same reward? Gah, wow. Handy! (In FFXI, if everyone needed a drop, you'd have to fight the thing that many times, once for each person.)

It's a wonder anyone even tries to raid a town, with as many as those PvP NPCs there are. I can't walk three steps without tripping over one...

As far as I can tell (from an hour or so playing this morning) they don't hurt your XP. That's boggling, but great!

This is not true at all.

The only thing in the game that will give you a Dishonorable Kill is if you kill any NPC marked "Civilian". Yes, Dishonorable Kills will cause your rank to fall and you want to avoid them. But if you do lose a rank, you can still keep and equip any armor that you obtained from the higher ranks. Example: I am still wearing the Rank 11 PvP equipment even though my rank has fallen to Rank 6.

NPCs marked "PvP" can be killed, but two things will happen: 1) You will become PvP flagged if you attack the NPC, and opposing faction players can now attack you. When the NPC dies, a message is sent off to the Local Defense channel, alerting the opposing faction. So if you kill an NPC marked "PvP", expect some PvP action shortly thereafter ;)

Just to clarify, NPCs marked "PvP do NOT give Dishonorable Kills. Feel free to gank as many as you please, because killing them won't affect your rank at all.

Yeah, Squeenix loves to screw the melee. But it makes sense, when you think about it. After all, DRKs need *something* to angst about.

Regarding grinding to level, my friend from work who is a level 60 warrior in WoW says that if you're grinding you're wrong. Quests are the best way to get XP, not just from the reward but if they involve killing monsters to get items then you will generally get good XP from the monsters as well. And the higher level the quest, the more XP it gives as reward. As an example, I got 875 XP from a quest I completed on Sunday. That was almost a quarter of the XP I needed for the next level.

Another hint to improve the XP you get is to not play for a while and leave your character in a city or inn. After a while your character becomes "rested" and killing monsters while rested gives bonus XP! The longer your character has rested, the bigger the bonus. The bonus doesn't apply to quests though.

I have a hard time with that whole "not playing" thing. :P But yeah, the XP can get so good like that! I'm level 13 and I killed a 15 and a 16 mob today at lunch, and I got over 250 XP each! Gah! But you're right on the quests, I should do more of those. (I still can't believe I got half a level of XP just for opening a job skill necessary for my job!)
