gbeans: I have an appointment this afternoon and might miss Eco. I should make it in time for Escort though!

daltontrix posted a picture of his WoW character, so I did one of our FFXI static!
Draque and Ead and Ceh and I on our way to adventuring! That's some serious Art right there! :P (And sorry, Ceh, you came out a little, um, funny looking.)
I had a screenshot, but I didn't post it yesterday because I was grumpy. I found a costume to wear in-game for Halloween~! And hey, there'd be plenty of space to store all the candy I'll get!

WoW was amusing last night. Eventually I settled down enough to play and enjoy it, so I was doing some quests. I had to run from one end of the Barrens to the other (staying on roads), but I was mostly watching TV while doing so. I was thinking to myself "Not so long ago this was a scary place! Full of bad aggro! Isn't it nice that now nothing can really hurt you?". Ha ha ha, next thing I know I'm hearing a funny sound -- it sounded like Fluffy was fighting something. Buh? So I looked from the TV to the computer and found I was at half-life. A pack of centaur and their hyenas were on me. They were all only level 15, but there were two centaur and three or four hyenas. Also I had aspect of the cheetah on (go go go perma-flee!) so every time I got hit I was dazed and couldn't move. I died. Fast. :P So very funny, when I had been thinking just a moment before that I was untouchable.
burgerdog's posts make me wonder/worry that I'm going to need to find a guild to do end game stuff. (Yeah I have ~40 levels to go before end game, but I'll hit it on WoW years before I hit it in FFXI, so I should be thinking about it now.) Problem is, much of the reason I like playing WoW is that I can do it alone. I've never partied yet and I really don't want to. I wonder what will happen when I hit 60 if I still want to play alone... I wonder if there will be goal-type stuff I can solo, some point of continuing to play once I hit 60.

Date: 2005-10-18 01:40 pm (UTC)I know one of the awesome things about WoW is being able to solo, but this changes at the highest levels. At that point, the only way to progress your character is through equipment and/or PvP. This (unfortunately?) requires you to group with other people.
At 55+, there are several dungeons you can visit. From these dungeons, you can easily obtain enough to loot to equip yourself entirely in Blue items--some of which are arguably better than Epic gear. Doing these dungeons at higher levels is actually a great way to get xp, make money, and get some nice equipment upgrades to boot. The good thing is that finding or starting PUGs for these dungeons is easy. I didn't join a guild until 58, so I got a lot of gear for my Mage from these places through PUGs. I won't lie--you'll run into less problems if you go through these places with a guild group. But it's certainly not impossible to go do these places and get nice gear unguilded. :)
If you want to deck yourself out in Epic (purple) gear, then you WILL need a guild. This gear is obviously nice, but you don't *need* it--you can wear the Blue gear you got from the other high level dungeons and still be effective at PvP and non-raid PvE. Not something to worry about until much later, though, as most raid guilds won't take in anyone under 60. A lot of them require you to have Blue gear, and certain quests completed before you even apply.
PvP and Battlegrounds: You can earn some very nice Epic rewards by getting Exalted reputation with the Battleground factions. This requires a lot of time and effort, but again, not something that requires a guild. You will be forced into a group PvP situation, though, so no soloing in the BG. I really recommend giving the lower level BG brackets a try--in some ways, low level PvP is a lot more fun than high level PvP.
*IMO*, a guild is nice to have, but not really required unless you want to get into hardcore raiding. I was able to get a lot of good, high level gear, and officer PvP ranks without the benefit of a guild helping me.
And one more thing, give instances a try. I know grouping with people after seeing Barrens chat for 10+ levels doesn't sound appealing, but many of them are fun and offer good rewards for completing them.

What does PUG stand for? Player... something Group?
