Okay, after looking at this, I'm admittedly a bit curious. What's the skill chain system about? If there's a decent way to explain it, at least. If it's something that'd make no sense without having played the game (or something similiar), then I'll stay in the dark. ;)

As you fight you gain 'Technique Points' or 'TP' each time you hit. When you get TP to 100% or more (max 300%) you can use special maneuvers that are based upon your skill in the weapon your using.

Each maneuver has a sort of elemental association when combined with another maneuver. If you time things right you get a 'skill chain' or 'renkei' that will deal bonus damage to the targets.

BUT it gets even better, depending on the SC you create spells of the same element(s) as the chain can be cast for a 'Magic Burst', which augments the damage or other effects of the spell cast. Again, timing is important. The magic burst can only be created /after/ the SC, but not too long after.

[livejournal.com profile] pomr explains it well. :) It's a of testing the players' skills instead of something that's just the characters' skills. Also, it's a test of teamwork -- FFXI is really big on getting you to work well with others, even/especially if they're people you just met. If you do it right, you do a lot more damage, kill things faster, get XP faster, etc.
