I think this is my first SGA fanfic rec? I've liked and loved other fics before, but I think this is the first one I'm mentioning in my LJ.

I don't overly like Ronon as a character, so it's kind of odd that a fic made me almost like him. kylielee1000's First Lesson (rated NC-17 by the author, but seems more like a mild R to me) makes sense of him for me. It's possible there are eps left that I haven't seen yet (or haven't paid as much attention to as I should have), but Ronon never seemed very fleshed-out or very realistic to me. (His name drives me crazy, too. I keep wanting to spell it 'Ronan'.) This story makes me want to see more of him, learn more about him, read more about him. :)

For some reason I've never read The Chronicles of Narnia books. I have no idea why, they seem exactly the type of stories I'd like, I guess I just never got around to them. The movie looks amazing (I'm so totally going to go see it, while I'm still "meh, eventually I'll see it, I guess" over Harry Potter), and I stuck the books onto my wishlist for my family to get for me this Christmas.

Really though, I feel like I must have been living in a hole to have missed them this long. :P

This sort of meme-thingie has been going around, so I thought I'd try my hands at it.

Ten things you should know about me/my LJ. If you've been a reader of mine for a while, you might know some or all these things already.



In no special order:

1) I get obsessed with things. When I'm into something, I'm totally into it and most of my posts will be about it. Currently I'm into FFXI, but previously it's been anime, Harry Potter, MUSHing/RPing, and other things. The plus side of this is: If you're not interested in what I'm currently into, just wait a while and eventually I'll babble endlessly about something else. (Though FFXI has lasted a lot longer than any other interest...)

2) I don't post about RL stuff much. In all seriousness, I don't think my RL is very interesting. When I do post about RL it's usually work-bitching or commenting on my inability to sleep. I'm a simple person who lives a "normal" (boring) life.

3) I post a lot. (Sorry.) I try to keep myself to one post a day, because I don't want to spam everyone's flist. Sometimes (or often times) I fail and post twice in a day. Now and then I get up to three times in a day, but it would take some event on the level of life-changing to make me post more than three per day.

4) While keeping #3 in mind, my LJ is written for me as much as for anyone else. While I hate the idea of spamming people or boring them with endless talk on my obsession-of-the-moment, this is my LJ. I do consider it a journal -- a record of my life at the moment. I like being able to look back a year or two years and see how my life was at the time.

5) This journal is mostly public (and sometimes friends-locked) and not private for a reason! Even with what I said in #4, this journal is (to borrow isiscolo's phrase) a dialogue. Please please please comment whenever you like! If you don't understand something, ask! I really enjoy talking with you all, so always comment if you want to!

6) I friends-lock as few posts as possible. You won't be missing much of anything if I don't have you friended. Nearly the only thing I ever flock are work posts. Work bitching or the much more rare non-bitching posts, they all get locked. I'd rather keep all work (and family) people away from my LJ. I'm not ashamed of any part of what I talk about here (I'd happily talk about slash or gaming to strangers or to co-workers), but I like keeping RL and online-life separate.

7) I almost never take quizzes, and if I do take one it's even rarer that I would post a result. The only exception to this are the times I actually made the quiz. Those I would take and post, as sort of "advertising". I've only made two of them total though, so it's not a common thing. In my opinion, quizzes are a waste of space and I'd rather not see them on my flist. Un-cut quizzes (especially big ones or those with graphics) are my most common reason for defriending someone.

8) Friending/being friended. If I have you friended, I read your LJ. I use no filters, and I very very very rarely skim. I have lots of online time, and if I have you friended then I enjoy reading your posts. If you have me friended but have my journal blocked by some filter, please feel free to defriend me instead. You won't hurt my feelings and I'd rather have an honest count of who reads my LJ. In general: I wish everyone on my flist would post more. :) I almost always run out of posts long before I run out of time to read them. And like I said, you're all interesting people!

9) I don't tend to give out much RL information online. Basic facts: I'm an adult, I'm female, I live in California. That's about as much as I tell most people. And as a side note: I usually allow online people to assume I'm male and not correct them, because I HATE HATE HATE HATE when people (especially gamers) start treating me differently once they find out I'm female. Believe me, I notice it. I am not looking for a SO, I don't need your help/company/attention any more than I did when you thought I was male. Treating me differently once you find out I'm female will just annoy me (and I bet this applies to other women in this situation, too).

10) My view of porn/NWS stuff is sometimes "off". I spent nearly a year being paid to look at porn, thus nothing sexual shocks me anymore. Man having sex with a plant? *yawn* Woman doing it with a monkey? Zzzz. Two lightbulbs getting it on? ...okay, haven't seen that one yet. I try to mark things NWS if there's even a doubt in my mind, because I really don't want to shock/offend anyone. Problem is, foot-long massive squirting penises seem rather ho-hum to me now, and I forget that others might not feel the same.



Wow, I actually did come up with ten things! Go me!

Narnia is love~ It's a whole series, too, and while I think the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is the best one, all of them are pretty neat to read. C.S. Lewis is an awesome author, and a very intelligent man. :3

Make sure you read them in the right order, not the order the books are numbered as. For some reason, using /one/ letter C.S. Lewis wrote to some kid, after he died, his estate changed the order to chronological rather than the way they were published (which presumably is safe to say is the way he wanted them read and is the way they're doing at least some of the movies).

So, read 'em:
1. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
2. Prince Caspian
3. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
4. The Silver Chair
5. The Horse and His Boy
6. The Magician's Nephew
7. The Last Battle

#6, The Magician's Nephew is a prequel. And like many prequels, this sort of thing is much more interesting when you already have some connection to the world. For example, watching Star Wars shortly after Revenge of the Sith just felt off. While something like the Star Wars series is a lot more closely tied together than Narnia, it still makes sense to follow published order.

When I first read Narnia in the early 80s, I had a boxed set which was in the order suggested by firebyrd. Some time later, I found them published in the order which reflects the chronological order the events actually occur in.

Since I *did* read them in the published order, I may be prejudiced in the matter, but I think the published order is almost certainly a better sequence in which to read them. So don't be tricked by the new ordering!

That's exactly it. While I read them in the published order too, so I'm definitely biased, I just can't imagine that the events of The Magician's Nephew would be half as interesting without the previous connection to the world. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is a much better introduction, which would be why they're doing that first as a movie.

I tried to read them about a million times as a kid and could never get past about page 10. No clue why. Just didn't suck me in. Despite my love of fantasy/sci-fi in general. But yeah, the movie looks like it will be enjoyable! :-)

I went to a private, religous school as a child and Narnia was the bread and butter of our reading time. Every school year we always had a book or three read to us (in younger grades) or were required to read them ourselves. It's been years since I've experienced the story again (I haven't since I graduated that school). I'm looking forward to the movies to see how they shape up compared to my childhood version of things :)

Which is the main reason I watch you ^ ^ Even tho I am not into FFXI, and half the time I don't really know what you are talking about (lol), I completely respect your obsessive focus, because of course I have one of my own. I guess I can relate, even if we have different escapist obsessive outlets.

It just makes online life so much easier! The whole "But some are more equal than others" thing applies so strongly to online stuff...

I started working at AltaVista as a tech support person, and the head of the spam defense team snagged me away because "you are too good to be wasted doing tech support". Hee! (Alas, I'm back to doing tech support now. :/ )

Narnia is a great series. I loved all the books, loved the BBC videos, and loved the play. If it wasn't for my school's obsession with it, I would have missed out on such a fun book. (You can tell where I'll be December 9, right?)

About GOF, though...don't be too surprised if it doesn't live up to the hype. I suppose it's all about what you want to see in the first place that determines if you'll like it. I think your 'meh' feeling is one to be trusted.

Thanks for the info on both parts! I'm thinking I might duck into GoF after seeing Narnia, assuming I can make myself sit still for it after sitting through a whole movie before it. :P Or maybe I'll just wait till it comes out on DVD...

When I worked at AltaVista I was on the "spam defense" team. I looked at sites and decided if they were spam (and thus out of the search index) or not. Since 99.9999% of spam is porn, I basically spent my days paid to look at porn.

Best job I ever had, for that reason and more. :)

Narnia was one of my favourite places to be, when I was younger. Even now it's a wonderful place to be... but. It's also where I learnt a lot about brainwashing.

To me, the best books always were Prince Caspian, Voyage of the Dawn Treader and Horse and His Boy. The worst are Magician's Nephew and the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Yes, I know everyone else loves the latter, but to me it's just too bleeding obvious. I prefer the slightly less overdone stories.

Oh? Huh! That makes it sound even more interesting! (I know zero about the plot, other than what I've picked up from the 30 second TV commercials: Some (British?) kids are the main characters and there's a talking dog (wolf?) that sounds evil.)

I can't wait to read them and catch up with everyone else. :)
