Okay, okay, who failed to send me the memo that Thai food is hot? Thinking it must be like Chinese food, I had some tonight. "Some" being a mouthful. Then my tongue, gums, nose, and other assorted parts of my face caught fire and fled for their lives. Quite a shame because it smelled good. Like Chinese food. Darned lying Thai food.

Eh, thought I had more RL stuff than that, but I guess we'll move on to the FFXI portion of this post.

Spent three and a half hours trying to get a party (bringing my grand total up to 21.5 RL hours spent standing there, waiting for a party invite. Insane, no?), then actually got an invite! Amazing! (Ha ha, I had been the only one seeking a party for the last 30 minutes, so they had no choice but to ask me!)

Alas I had just barely called out my fellowship NPC, so I had to dismiss him after one kill. But he's a toy and XP is important, so I didn't mind at all. XP wasn't what some people would consider good (we made 6K, with the XP ring, in three hours), but man, any XP is good XP to me!

I'm @10K TNL. I'd like to think I could get that in one party, but it's more likely to take two. Or maybe one party + Eco, Escort, and the solo ENM BC event.

The great thing of the night:

Rarrr! I broke 1K damage on an XP mob! Not just once, not just twice, but often! RARRRR! (And that's just with SA, no Souleater or Last Resort or anything else.) Oh and I stole two gold beastcoins, which always makes me a happy little DRK.

Bed now.

Not all of it is. You kinda have to pick and choose. They'll often put little chilis next to the menu items, to denote how hot it is.

The stuff that's not hugely hot is /really good/.

Try Pad Thai sometime.

I keep forgetting you're so culinarily sheltered (did you ever get around to having an avocado?)

Where did you have it, and what was it? I'm not very knowledgeable about it, but I've had Thai food that made me want to die, and Thai food no worse than the average Americanized Chinese restaurant's take on 'hot.' It depends on what you get... some things are always hot (to us... most restaurants here tone even things that are supposed to be mouth-blistering down because they don't think anyone not raised on that level of heat can take it), but some of the curries are pretty mild. (and a Thai restaurant by my old job made /amazing/ fried rice that had no peppers in it at all.)

Pad Thai > all. =D The restaurant near our apartment complex allows you to choose the level of spice you want in most of their dishes. Next time (if there is a next time!) see if they can prepare it as mild spiceyness (spiciness? ack) or no spice.

This came out of a box. It described it as "sweet and tangy" so I was expecting something more like sweet and sour stuff at a Chinese place. Next time I'll try going to a real place instead!

Yeah, if I can ask for very light (or no!) spiciness (ack, what odd-looking spelling) I'll try from a real place. This stuff last night came from a box-mix. Dried rice noodles to cook and a packet of sauce.

The closest I've gotten one is that one in your icon! I've not actually tried one yet, no. I did get the chance once (leftover sandwiches from a company meeting) but I hadn't been feeling bold that day.

The stuff I had was a mix from a box. It was called "sweet and tangy Thai noodles" or something like that, so I was expecting something like sweet and sour at a Chinese place. It smelled like that (which is why I started out with a big, eye-watering bite), but it didn't taste like that. :P

Next time I'll try going to a real place.

If you go to thai again, make sure to ask for it "mild" until you get used to it. Some nice mild items are: pad thai, green curry, and coconut milk soup. Anything with "thai basil" is probably safe. Avoid red curry until you have mastered other items on the menu.

I forgot, do you eat fish? If so, try some of the fish dishes as well, they are also very good.

Thistle? Thai food, as a rule, is what most would consider hot. :)

I'm a bit odd in that my threshold for hot is a bit higher than most. That said, Pad Thai from a restaurant, particularly chicken pad thai is quite mild and very tasty. :) Sorry you ended up in pain though, that's not fun.

I'm pretty sheltered, too... but avocados make life worth living! You MUST try some (uh, not sure if they're in season now, though). Creamy green-y deliciousness. They taste, as many of my favorite things do, like love.

I can't imagine packaged mixes could produce anything like actual Thai food... and it really hot without any warning on the package. What was the brand? When you try a real restaurant, make sure it's well-reviewed. I'm not sure what they're like in your area, but here there is a WIDE range in quality.

In keeping with the general gist of comments, not all Thai food is hot, but there is certainly a large percentage (easily recognizable for the most part) that is. That being said, I seem to remember us having a conversation that touched on Thai food at one point. Or maybe it was just a 'hot food' discussion. The latter seems likely, as I'm a bit of a connoiseur of the spicy. But yes, it's hard to go wrong with pad thai, and it's a good initiation.

I must be the opposite of you. :) I find plain white rice flavorful, and eat it alone on a regular basis. (In fact, it's what I had for lunch!)

*smooch!*

Yeah, it's likely we had a conversation about hot. We're opposite on it (as we are on so much!). :P My lunch today was nice, enjoyable, and non-threatening: White rice! Mmmm. I could eat plain white rice endlessly.

Thanks for the info! I'll try that next time. And nope, no fish. My mother explains it to people as "she doesn't eat anything with a face". :P

A long time ago I read that Thai food is a bit philosophical in that there are 5(?) flavours that should be included in every dish. Sweet, sour, salty, hot, and something else ... probably bitter.

Good luck luck finding some Thai food that isn't scalding, but if it doesn't have at least some spiciness to it it's probably not Thai. :)

*goes searching on the intarweb* The fifth one is apparently "creamy". :)

Sweet, sour, salty, hot, and something else ... (creamy)

Hmmm. You know, I'd love that if they left out spicy/hot! :P

Oh well, maybe the next thing I try I'll like better!

Hmm, I don't recall what the brand was. I dumped the (wet) noddles back into the box and tossed it into the trash!

Yeah, one day I'll try an avocado... then I'll probably love it and wish I had sooner! :P

...Ehr. I was going to do a Thistle "I LIKE GIRLS" thing, but then I saw what you were replying to was "My mother explains it to people as "she doesn't eat anything with a face"." So... she saying "I LIKE GIRLS" counteracts the Thistle not-gay defense.
