Lost and FFXI
Jan. 18th, 2006 10:16 pmLost: Jack. *rolls eyes* Sawyer/Kate. *gag* A thrill-a-minute ep! What's happened to this series? Why are all (most) of the characters suddenly so unlikeable? Charlie? I'd be happy if he got eaten by a polar bear. Jack? He shouldn't exist, as the writers first intended. Kate? The Others should feed her to a shark.
I only watched the whole thing with half an eye, and when I did give it my full attention I couldn't see for all the eye-rolling I was doing.
Shooting off in the distance, an island full of Others, dinosaurs, swarms of black stuff, etc. And Jack yells? Um, hello? How about being a little more sneaky? Like, say, not yelling? Not giving away your exact position? And the whole Jack/Locke drama -- I think I could go back to liking Locke as much as I used to if he would just put a bullet in Jack's head.
Bara: Jack asked her: "How long would it take to train an army?" And... ha ha ha. Yeah, you knock yourself out, Jack. That'll go /real/ well. *more eye rolling*
FFXI: Got a party invite pretty fast today (yay!), arrived at Crawler's Nest (yay!) and the party decided to go to GC (gods help me, boo!). Three of the party members were the same as last night's party and the party had a four level range. I nearly left, but didn't. "Hey, there's another RDM, so my job will be easy! And look, she's meleeing so I guess I can, too!"
Recall last night's RDM? The one who did nothing but cast stoneskin, phalanx, and refresh on himself? This one was actually worse. All she did was melee. The BLM didn't get one single refresh, she didn't cast one single spell of any kind (other on herself, to cure when she got hit by an AOE). Why the hell, why the bloody hell, would you level RDM if all you want to do is melee? Be a WAR, dammit! Be a ... um, some other job that only melees! RDM is NOT for you!
But eventually she left and I was the only RDM. Woo woo woo! Even with a big refresh list and a NIN tank ({Hello!} {Haste} {Do you need it?}), I was so much happier. Even when I was the main healer and sole RDM I was happy! Then near the end of the fight we got a second RDM and it was as sucky as the first one.
Dudes, we're nearly level 50! Why the hell do you not know your job? I had to ask her to do the BLM's refresh (the only RDM-task I gave her!)... and even with that, the BLM was still drinking yag drinks. I did every other thing a RDM does, she just had to do one refresh, but she couldn't handle that.
That's three out of three RDMs who were less than useless. Three out of three who did literally nothing. No refreshes, no dispel, no curing, NOTHING. How the hell did these people get to level 50? And what kind of RDMs will they go on to be?
I know I'm far, far, far from an expert RDM, but dammit, I hate how they're making the job look! I can keep my damned refresh cycle going while keeping an add slept and main curing! (I did that tonight!) And these people can't do anything?
*holds head*
Edit: Oh, I forgot! Sylf made me new armor, which looks much better than what I had been wearing! Wish I could get different pants, but hume RSE pants rock for mages. :(

Date: 2006-01-19 06:28 am (UTC)He's asking how long the OTHERS must have been there in order to train an army, like they apparently have.
At least, that's the idea that I got from the tone he delivered the question in.
Also, suddenly Sayid is a minor character? Okay. Sure. :/
DESMOND PLZ.

Date: 2006-01-19 04:43 pm (UTC)Oh, I like that interpretation of the line better. I hope it's correct, because really, making an army of their group is just highly silly.

Who's not a minor character these days? :/ Other than idiot Jack...

Date: 2006-01-19 10:36 pm (UTC)However, I do think that Ana Lucia's not the one fit to train people. Locke is. He's been grooming people for his own little personal army almost since the crash, after all. Then again, his reasons aren't for protection; they're to convert others to his wacky Island beliefs.

Date: 2006-01-19 03:12 pm (UTC)I actually read the "tarin an army" comment before you posted and I though "How cool is that." What fun... I like the drama in that.
I did get slightly annoyed and and wondered "why the heck does he think he needs to go after Michael?" ...but it didn't bother me enough to really care after the fire circle chat occurred.

Date: 2006-01-19 04:38 pm (UTC)"Don't like" is an understatement. I hate him. Hate him, hate him, hate everything about him. :)
I'm muchly amused by the thought of the survivors forming an army, but "amused" shouldn't be the desired reaction to the thought. How many of them would be worth much of anything in a fight?
I did get slightly annoyed and and wondered "why the heck does he think he needs to go after Michael?
For the same reason I hate him: He needs to be the hero. He wants to save everyone. Sorry, Jack dude, but that's impossible, and you making yourself into a drama queen over it is annoying.

Date: 2006-01-19 04:59 pm (UTC)You're absolutely right. And this is his fatal flaw, and I think the issue that makes him the most broken. Yeah, it'd be an annoying trait in someone in RL, but as a character on this show, it does make me roll my eyes but it also explains all of his actions, especially the insane ones like yelling into the jungle during a gunfight.
I agree with you about Charlie, though. What they're doing to him is annoying the living crap out of me because I really, really liked him all the way up to his second flashback episode. Ever since then, most of his actions make me want to stab him with his guitar pick.

Date: 2006-01-19 05:44 pm (UTC)Flaws are great in characters, but for me this is overplayed (over-exaggerated?) in Jack. It doesn't come off as realistic to me. (You know the jungle is full of Bad Things. People are shooting. You yell, giving away your exact position. I don't find that believable at all.)
I agree with you about Charlie, though. What they're doing to him is annoying the living crap out of me because I really, really liked him all the way up to his second flashback episode.
I have two theories:
1) All the characters are becoming less likable because that's what would happen once you're stuck living with them for 50 or so days. The more you know people, the more their stupid little habits would annoy you. Maybe the writers are trying for an effect like that.
2) (Less likely.) The writers are giggling at their ability to change how all of us feel about a character. First they make us love Charlie, then they make us hate him. If they make us love him again...

Date: 2006-01-19 08:03 pm (UTC)There's a lot he does that I would expect a doctor to do... just because they're a doctor.
Also, I was talking with a co-worker last week, and we both really feel that in order for a group to survive, a structure MUST set up. If not, the anarchy will enevitably lead to the mutual destruction of them all. There have to be leaders and there have to be followers. If doing what you know pushes you to the front, it's a role you need to fill. Decline and sink back, the group fails... If all born leaders sink back into line with the followers, no one goes anywhere or accomplishes anything. I don't fault Jack for pushing to the front... I think Locke would be to apathetic... and Boone... well, that just terrifies me.

Date: 2006-01-20 01:34 am (UTC)Sawyer - On the other hand, Sawyer, with Kate's help, is becoming less hard and more soft, creating a polarized leadership between he and Jack. I find it sociologically interesting.
Sayid - Come on, he's always been a minor character when it comes to the Trio of Jack, Sawyer and Kate. We didn't even see bloody Eko last night. So don't bitch about there being minor characters. ;)
They at least had a b-story that was good. Jin and Sun. They're my two favourite characters, to be honest. Simply because it's realer than the others in the island.
I'm glad Charlie and Claire are no longer together - it makes what Charlie has to do in the next five or six episodes easier.
I'd rather have a backstory on Libby. She is -THE- fricking best character.
And did you hear 'Zeke' when he called for Kate? He called for Alex. Poor French Chick.
